What is this? Is it just something fanmade that's trying to pass off as the real thing?

Huh. I'm guessing it's fanmade, since there's pretty much no information saying otherwise, and the text on the video is so minimal. Aside from that, I think Weta would be rather disappointed if it turned out to be real.

However, it is theoretically possible that this was released by Weta or ADV as a viral-type thing, but I highly doubt it. Still, it's fun to watch.

Wow, that's very well done for something amateur. I'll withhold judgement for now, but the industry of late has started understanding the value of "leaking" information.

Things to notice:
Copyright statement from GAINAX at the beginning.
The username, 071231. Registered expressly for the purpose of posting this video. It would also imply that more information will be forthcoming on 2007 December 31.
English text at the end, "The angels are back again?"

Translation of the text:
渋谷ハチ公前にエヴァ出現-EVANGELION
Shibuya Hachiko dog before the advent of Eva - EVANGELION
実写版エヴァ?
Live-action version of Eva?

The CG stuff looks like it comes from one of the games.

Wow, that does seem kind of Cloverfield-ish. Note that the copyright information could have been easily put there to make it seem slightly more official.

If this is official, it's extremely unlikely that it's a movie. I doubt a live action Evangelion film would come out in Japan around the same time as Rebuild, and if it were by Weta or ADV, it probably wouldn't be in Japanese. If I want to find some way around this logic, I could say that it is for the Weta movie and it was intentionally in Japanese to be more cryptic, as viral things often are.

You know, when/if LAEM ever does come out, I hope there's an alternate reality game to go with it. =D

EDIT: My theory is that this is going to be a fan project. There are some really good CG animators out there who do amateur work, and there are a lot of Evangelion fans out there. The two groups are bound to intersect eventually.

So it does, but it looks like it's been added on to the rest of it very nicely. If it weren't for the seemingly high quality of the CG and the Gainax logo in the starting, it'd be a very obvious FAKE.

And what the hell is Sho hitting at?

Oh yeah, and why does the text mention Hachiko?

(For those of you not in the know, 'twas a real-life Seymour Asses. If you still don't understand, then there's no hope for you.)

It's kind of hard to see with the poor video quality, but Eva 01 is standing right in the middle of the famous intersection in Shibuya where Hachiko's statue is. One of the buildings definitely looks like the big Starbucks that's there, anyway.

So there's no Tokyo III, then?

This definitely official movie is going to suck.

Well, it does say "before the advent of Eva," implying that Tokyo is no longer what it once was. Might as well hold tight on this one and see if the guy posts anything else at the end of the month.

Links on Google would seem to indicate that this is the original video source, although I can't figure out how to sign in to this thing to actually watch it.

http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1753255

Edit: ok, I registered. It's the same video with much higher picture quality. I'll see what I can do about downloading it, but it is Flash video.

I just registered and watched it. The Eva model actually looks more realistic than I thought it would.

EDIT: I downloaded the FLV and am currently uploading it to my website.

EDIT (TRUE): Here it is. Yes, it was actually titled "smile.flv".

Damn, you're right NAvery. It looks a lot more realistic. Pretty damn professional. Too bad we can't sign these guys up right now to do the real live action Eva.

Wow, you were fast. I had to read the headers to figure out where the FLV file was.

Anyway, I transcoded it to h.264 for people like me who want a real video format:

http://drinian.org/dump/2007-12-11-laemteaser.avi

By Japanese film standards, it's amazingly well done.
