Darn. I liked them both.
Of course I always assumed after watching the series once Ritsuko had a lot of pent up hatred toward Ayanami.
So I wasn't that suprised she would act on it.

As far as the Tea scene goes, she never made tea before, and she just woke up so she could have been a little groggy.

Lame, I know, but I've doen worse to myseld when I'm drowsy.
I asked "And where would you take me?"
At this the beast laughed, tears made of my mother's blood leaked from his eyes.
"I will take you to every place you never wanted to be, and you will hate it."
"Then I will take you to every place you've already been, and you will hate that also."
"Last I will take you to the places you have always dreamed of, and that you'll hate worst of all."

Quit tempting me, I can't afford the rest of the Eva manga's! Oh... the urge is so strong; perhaps Lucifer is willing to make a deal?

I liked the tea scene. I'm always for R/S. I think Sadamoto added it to move the, "Shinji wanting to get closer to Gendo plot," by having Rei help Shinji win his father's love. Also it strengthened Rei and Shinji's relationship.

The tea scene fits with the anime about as much as the following would.

Shinji: "Will you have a scone with some teas Rei?"
Rei: "I have already eaten. And I never drink......tea."
*Rei's silhouette slowly moves by itself across the back wall of the apartment*
Shinji: "I hate my father"
*The silhouette suddenly graps Shinji's silhouette's neck and begins to mock throttle him*

Rei burning her hand on the tea was quite a realistic effect to me.

Why would Rei fumble the hot water? She has an obvious lack of tea making expertise.

Why would anyone make tea in the first place? When one has guests.

Would Rei have guests under normal circumstances? No.

Is this condusive to the cultivation of tea making skill? No.

(I just realised that Rei would make one hell of a Tea Ceremonist, but that's another story)

It is these subtle cues that enhanced the overall impact of the scene, to me. It painted the portrait of two lonely souls finding each other, and the innocent steps they take in pursuit of a normal life in the midst of, well, Eva.

I wrote a little short story inspired by this scene a long time ago. The construction is not what I would be proud of now, but most of the elements are there.

You can either choose to change yourself or change your surroundings. All decisions are variations of those two.

As Manga-Asuka, Naoko, Psycho-Kyoko with "Asuka-chan", and Shinji can tell you. ;)

In terms of that teascene, I guess it was alright. What bothers me is I feel it was a case of RIAO. Come on, Rei acutally expressing emotions? How can she do that when she doesn't know what they are? Plus the idea of her not knowing how to make tea/being inept is stupid. At least Sadamoto went along with the anime-idea that she knows more then she lets on.

Random sidenote: Gag, stupid Sadamoto! Asuka gets her first period in 22'! NOT earlier then that! >_<

honestly i think the Tea scene should be in ReBuild...theres lotsa scenes from the Manga that id love to see in Rebuild...especially Shinji trying to punch Kaworu...(although they should have him hit him and THEN pass out)

i officially love oblivious...those were ALL things i was gonna say...

I agree whole heartedly. I also think the garden scene where Rei talks about the times she has touched Shinji should be in there as well.

Even if the scenes it references aren't present in Rebuild. Just to fuck with the audience.

I still hate the tea scene.
