What would happen if EVA 03 never got possesed?

When I first saw EVA 03 I was eager to see it in action. But it got possesed and destoyed :cry: I kept on wondering would happened if it never got destroyed. What's your opinion on this

Here's something I prepared earlier, for the related "What if Evas 3 and 4 lived..."

So EVA-03 and EVA-04 make it safely to Tokyo-3; pilots Suzuhara and Horaki are inducted. Something in the initial tests makes Touji come over all protective in a "a guy's gotta do what a guy's gotta do" sort of way. Hikari thinks she's finally gotten through to him but he's still oblivious; and we have another disconnected couple.

Meanwhile Bardiel manifests, and I'm afraid it's Asuka who looks most disposable at this point. EVA-02 goes amok. Hikari and Shinji won't fight; Rei is ineffective, Touji tries but hesitates at a critical moment, and then - well things get a bit like in NXE. Asuka spends the rest of the series in Room 303.

Hikari tries to comfort Shinji, but he can't face human contact, and quits.

Zeruel arrives and it's up to Touji and then Rei to try and hold it back. When EVA-03 falls, it's Hikari who then oversynchs in EVA-04 while Shinji is talking gardening and philosophy with Kaji.

Rei takes the lead against Arael as planned; retreats promptly, and then employs the Lance

Armisael vs Shinji, Rei and Touji (Hikari is held back for the same reason that canonically Shinji was) - this one could go in any of a number of different ways; but rather than saying that 3 Evas are enough to defeat it, say that Touji has to sacrifice himself. Ritsuko and Shinji still play out their parts for the rest of that episode.

Cue Tabris, and a brief Hikari/Kaworu pairing (Has anyone ever done that pairing before???)

End-game: Gendo's scenario is having to be revised on the fly as Yui-sama doesn't have an S2; SEELE are probably happy enough to employ EVA-04 as the medium for their plan. Shinji is probably useless, but would be stuffed into the entry-plug and EVA-01 dropped to the bottom of the lake while Hikari, operating without Asuka's limits, is able to eventually take down the harpies.

Instrumentality proceeds as GNR erupts - but who guides the process? Ikari-kun who is calling from the bottom of the lake, or Hikari in the spiritually active EVA-04? Hikari's outcome would, I feel, be tidier than Shinji's.

EVA-04 can't be used as a medium.

And let's not forget the reason EVA-03 got infected was because EVA-04 went poof. No EVA-04 go poof, no EVA-03 going to Japan.

Simple, they didn't use a Harpy as a medium now did they? EVA-01's unique origins are what allowed her to fill in for Lilith.

EVA-04 wasn't born from Lilith, EVA-01 is Lilith's sole, whatever that line translates to. The S² is, to borrow a term from Reichu, a non-sequitur. SEELE never said anything about the S² allowing EVA-01 to fill in. BTW Yui would probably still have an S² via bousou beatdown of Zeruel's sorry ass.

And where are

b) the angels all going?

Gendo and Misato have by this point already pissed off Keel. EVA-03 was pawned off on NERV HQ because they were affraid, not because of the Angels actions. Maybe they would have been sent after Zeruel, but there was no real need before that as the 3 current Evas managed just fine without them. I can't see SEELE saying "Let's hand Ikari a God".

Horaki-sama would have something to say about all that.

I think not. Rei may have been the engine, but Yui was doing a lot of the steering (e.g. fetching back the LnY from the Moon).

I'll give you that Yui had a plan. Rei just so happened to surpass Yui at that point. If she wanted to she could have made everyone very unhappy that day. As I've said elsewhere Rei defaulted to Yui's plan, so in that sense Yui was doing the steering. Just because Rei didn't do something doesn't mean she can't. Come end of the movie and Yui was at the Uber-Seed level and could do whatever she wanted.

Note I said if she wanted to, a lot. Not that she would.
