What is more real?
World 1:
- Post-apocalypse
- You live in a underground city-fortress
- You pilot a giant robot and fight against angels
- You easily survive a close nuclear bomb explosion that only flipped your car
- 0.00000001% probability events became your everyday routine
- You usually save the world in the last available second, like in a cheap movie
- You live with most popular girl in school that kisses you because of boredom
- Your penguin pet reads a newspaper
World 2:
- You live in a normal city, no apocalypse or something
- You have a normal family
- You study in a normal school, and Misato is a class teacher
- Asuka is your childhood friend
- Rei is a new girl in school, not a clone of your mother with an angel soul
- Pen-pen is your alarm clock
So, maybe the world in the episode 26 is actually real, and the rest of anime is just a Shinji's dream?

Re: Is Evangelion a Shinji's dream?
When I first watch episode 26, I felt that I was about to be cheated by a "but it was all a dream, even if it did contain realizations about life" type of ending. That turned out not the case; but some while later I encountered a take that NGE was best read with the NERV/Eva/Angel bits as Shinji having a psychotic break in between periods of normal school and (foster-)home life.
