Random question I know but it just popped into my head the other day.

Did Khara get someone in to bust their lungs or did they just use stock audio?

That scream was also used in Diebuster in 2004, IIRC, about 3 years before Eva 1.x’s use of it in its final Angel battle.

Edit: While not the same as the angel’s death scream, this seems to be related to another one of their screams.

Semi related but Ramiel’s famous choral ‘haaaaa’ noise had been used before in the original Gundam (1979) for Lalah Sune’s Elmeth, but watching through Ultraseven (1967) recently the same sound effect was used for a spaceship (I’ll have to look through some episode descriptions and find the exact episode) and I’d bet it’d been used before that in some older toku movie.

Yeah, a lot of sound effects in scifi are, like physical props, used for a lot of things and go way further back than you'd think at first

The movies function on their own terms. If people can't accept them on those terms, and keep expecting them to be NGE, then they probably should have realized a while ago that they weren't going to have a good time. ~ Words of wisdom courtesy of Reichu

Fittingly I just watched Atragon (1963) and am 98% certain Ramiel's choral voice sound effect is clipped from the opening vocal note of the OST piece 'Prayer of the Mu Empire'
