Status of NGE merchandising rights Blu-ray and DVD

Feel free to move this post to an old thread if you'd like.

Ok, so as a new Eva fan who just entered the fandom 3 years ago, I have been trying to find some of the cheapest options online when buying the complete original series. Unfortunately, since the series is now out of print, I have come across some outrageous prices online that range from $150 to $250. Obviously since NGE is now considered a collector's item, people who own the original series are now charging it as high as they want, since no other industry is competing with them.

My question to you all is do you know where I can find the complete series at a much cheaper price. And also, what is the current status of NGE's merchandising rights and who would be able to pick it up? I'd live to get a Blu-Ray release of it.

So. . .If I understand it correctly. And correct me if I'm mistake n.

The now defunct ADV owned the rights to the original NGE series, and now it's more or less in Legal Limbo.

Manga Entertainment owns the rights to EOE.

and Funimation owns the rights to ROE.

and all that goes back to Gainax, Khara, and Anno.

So. . .yeah. Despite its popularity. Unless Funimation comes up with the money to buy/renew the rights. . .I don't think we're getting a bluray box set of the original series. Rebuild? Definitely. NGE? Unlikely.

Both NGE and EoE licenses have expired, and nobody plans on renewing them. From this post, makes it seem like they're not even making them available to be licensed.

Also: stuff about a bluray release was discussed in depth in several threads, nitty gritty details in this post.

The main issue is NGE/EoE would have to be upscaled, and some of the original prints (e.g. episode 16) were lost.

Or they hate getting sued by the parent company of the company that they previously licensed the property to.

So is there Any hope for Funimation to release a complete Evangelion box set down the line? It's a pain in the keister having to hunt down old DVDs.

I would pay top dollar for the original NGE series, EOE, The Rebuild Films, CDs for all the OSTs, an artbook, and maybe. . .maybe. . .a few episodes of Insufficient Direction in the bonus features?

Realistically, how much cash would Funi have to dish out to bring all of Eva together under one roof (minus the Manga)?

While licensing fees are an issue, the willingness of the rights holder to license the work (s) to begin with is the bigger issue. Funi could throw a boatload of money at King Records/khara/whoever and if they still say no at the end of the day there's the roadblock.

So much that it would be unprofitable.

Pretty sure one of the other threads discussing NGE/EoE re-release (BD or just a regular re-release) mentioned that either:

1) Gainax/Khara wanted a hell of a lot of money from the stateside distributors.

OR

2) They just weren't interested in re-releasing at the time.

The dangling carrot for Funimation to pony up a ton of money for the rights to the tv series and movies is probably going to be being able to release it on Blu-ray. That will justify a lot of fans buying it AGAIN. Problem is, no such master exists at this time. So when you hear of a Japanese Blu-ray release, that will be the time to cross your fingers. Inbetween now and then, I don't expect much movement. Maybe after Final comes out on domestic video several years from now, and they've gone and made the ultimate collected edition of the new movies they'll look for something else to sell.

Seems like with every popular anime series they want a lot of money for it.

Just look at Sailor Moon, still waiting on a full release of the series over here.

I'm just happy I already own Eva Platinum and the box set of the movies. To be honest, I'd rather buy an out print official release DVD set than buy a bootleg one.

My opinion cute bootlegs like plushies and stuff that's so bad it's funny is fine, but when it's of movies and music and they look really close to actual item that's when I get scared.

"For Love and Justice, I'm the pretty sailor suited soldier, Sailor Moon! In the name of the Moon, I will punish you!" Sailor Moon
"Anta Baka?!" Asuka Langley Soryu
"We fall in love, our hearts may break, we lose sleep longing for someone, but that's how we know we're alive." Usagi Tsukino from the Sailor Moon S movie.

You mean like the original print is missing? As in somebody stole them? Like The Sex Pistols Original master recordings are gone forever level missing? Dang, that is a bit of a problem isn't it? Is there anything that can be done short of reanimating the whole series?

I'm not really sure what benefit you'd get from the series on blu-ray other than a cleaned up new transfer.

Back in 2003 they had all the original negatives except for parts of ep 16. Those were instead remastered from an internegative. Assuming they still care that should still be how it is.

View Original PostChuckman wrote:I'm not really sure what benefit you'd get from the series on blu-ray other than a cleaned up new transfer.

That is all the benefit you need. The 2003 remaster is pretty crap even by DVD standards. Even 20-40 year old, cheap ass 16mm film benefits from a proper HD scan.

Best case scenario is Japan rescans the whole thing with staff supervision. Probable scenario is they dump the 2003 remaster onto BDs for cheap profit and no benefit in picture quality. Absolute worst case scenario is Funimation licenses it, tries to do their own remaster and viciously fucks it sideways by cropping it to 16:9 and filtering the life out of it like they did with DBZ.

Maybe Funimation will re-master it themselves; just like what they did with DBZ :nervouslaugh:

Funimation can't copy a Blu-ray release that doesn't exist. That's the way it works. The anime licensing/distribution business is derivative, not generative.
