ALL of the coloring issues you mentioned was because in the last scene the color palette/tone was different. Asuka still has orange hair, blue eyes and a red plug suit.

Asuka's always had red-hair, blue hair and a red plug-suit. I don't think you understand what I'm talking about, here... Color wise, if you stick someone in a room with green light, it would appear his skin is green. Sunlight is white, and white has all colors, hence we see the 'natural' colors of the skin during day.

Well to me...I never really found that Asuka died..even if she did..I could never accept it.

Yet, she is there lying on the ground next to Shinji after the failed Instrumentality. And since she is there...that would mean she didnt die because if she had died..it would have meant her dying before the third impact and instrumentality therefore she would have died a normal death like Ritsuko and Misato and not been able to come back.

Yes, Shinji accepted everyone to be individuals and such..so he and Asuka (for some reason..lol) were brought back. But, Rei said that everyone would return to normal if they wished..so ya, if people wanted to become individuals again, then they could.

Although, I bet Anno made the ending to have everyone make their own opinions....like have you heard the saying "Death of the author"? It means that once the auhtor of whatever piece of literature places this into the eyes of the public..he dies (not literally lol).. meaning that whatever he emant for the story doesnt matter...everyone will interpret everything differntly and have different opinions. And thats the magic of our minds.

So ya, you interpret the ending to what you want.

Anyways..thats my take and I hoped it proved useful to you =).

In terms of the stupid "lol Asuka is Rei, Misato and herself" theory, Eva Otaku (parapharsed) said it best:

(There are some things I don't agree with in his FAQ and I think by now certian things were proven wrong but at least he wrote all that to begin with. *shrugs*)

Anyway, I'm one of those weirdos who finds the ending to be happy just like 26 is. Probably because I see the last scene as being a symbol of hope for people with depression/anxiety, such as yours truely. ; Not just a symbol of hope, but also learning to love yourself so you can love others and how if you take a chance at life, things will work out.

I could have sworn I mentioned this in here, but in terms of the WHY of those two returning, it boils down to this:

Shinji: Rejects Instrumenality: Will to live on. ("For the sake of who I am, I will be myself."/"But maybe I could learn to like myself. Maybe my life could have greater value.")

Asuka: Has the will to live, so she returns after Shinji rejects that. ("I don't wanna die, I don't wanna die, I don't wanna die..."/"I don't want to die. I don't want to disappear!"/"So, I live alone. But I don't want that! It's painful! I don't wanna be alone...I don't wanna be alone...I don't wanna be alone!")

Mmmkay?

Speaking of the stupid theory, just yesterday I stumbled across a anime blog of a fan who rambled about how great Eva is and mentioning a little about being excited about Rebuild. However, he (I'm assuming) stated that he thinks the final scene is Rei-Asuka, a hybrid of the two. :shock:
I attempted to somewhat enlighten him, of course. But a hybrid?
Asuka: "What the hell? Do I look like a car or something like that to you?! *dent* German model...?"

Bookend Rei, aka Rei III, is possibly saying farewell to Shinji? Or at least because she's Lilith, she's watching over humanity. (which I guess is what that 1st Platinum booklet meant by that quote, "the Rei who gazes upon man.")

i always thought the Rei appearance at the beginning was simply Lilith herself...acknowledging his arrival...or maybe Sachiel's arrival...(perhaps thats how the Angels were led to her...FOLLOW TEH REIS!!!)

but at the end...i thought Lilith died...

or maybe she seperated into all the original souls again...including her own...and that was just her own soul by itself staring at Shinji...

Rei was part of Lilith come GNR mode, so if it was Lilith by extension it was Rei too.

Kaworu/Adam and Rei/Lilith serperated all souls before Shinji left and the system crashed. Otherwise Asuka couldn't have come back.

Is it possible the bandages are just the director's way of saying "hey, gang, this is the same Asuka we know and love from the good old days when everyone was alive"? The reason I believe they are meant to serve as a message to the audience rather than an affirmation of continuity is becasuse she got lanced a good 7 or more times alongside a painful disembowelment which are not reflected by her bandages. Surely the message of this scene is "Asuka died, but here she is."
