Polovtsian Dances (the scrapped NGE OP theme)

Hey! I tried to search around on here for more information (other than the liner notes from Refrain of Evangelion) about Anno's wish to use Borodin's Polovtsian Dances as the opening theme for Neon Genesis Evangelion. It turns out that No. 17 "Gliding Dance of the Maidens" from this piece is very popular in anime. Many series, including Anno's Kare Kano, have used it in their soundtracks. You may also recognize it from DDR Extreme 2!

Anyways, I decided to see what it would sound like on top of the OP. It works pretty well! It has kind of a similar feel to "Bande-annonce (garçons)" from the 3.0 OST.

EDIT: YouTube hates me, so I uploaded it to my Vimeo account instead.

P.S. I apologize in advance if this post is in the wrong category, I'm new here...[/b]

That's pretty cool.

Makes me wonder what the OP would look like if it was specifically made to fit that song...

Wow, really works nicely!
Fun-fact: It was in fact used by Rahxephon too, haha :D

Wait, when was it used in RahXephon?

And why do I keep talking about that series when I don't even like it?

EDIT: Thanks Mr. Tines. While I completely don't remember that song in the show, lol.

"Strangers in Paradise" was from the 1953 musical Kismet, which was based off of the music of Alexander Borodin. It has since been covered (and often misattributed), but made very popular. It would have been very cool if they let Anno stick with his original choice! There aren't very many non-J-pop OPs as it is...

So Rahxephon knew exactly what it was to Evangelion and mirrored it in this musical choice. Interesting.

Huh. I wasn't expecting this to be as good as the original was. but I quite liked the music. It lends a much more somber feeling to the entire opening, making it feel like a different work entirely.

It works well, but for some reason, it feels more appropriate for EoTV/EOE-timeline Evangelion than for the early to middle series. Musically, it doesn't match up quite as well to the tempo of the visuals as does the "Cruel Angel's Thesis" theme -- but that's probably because the latter was actually used, and the visuals were probably synched to it (or vice versa).

Either way, it's an interesting fit.

I think it could have made a good ED theme myself. Better than Fly me to the Moon anyways, or whatever the song is called.

Hey OP, what version of the song is this? I'd like to get it off of iTunes if possible.

It's from The Millenium Collection: The Best Of Georg Solti! However, iTunes does not let you purchase this version individually. You can probably find it on Amazon MP3 or something (I ripped mine from Grooveshark).

This version is very close (same orchestra/chorus), but is it a bit slower!

I was not aware of this, I would loved to see such an opening.
Regarding the video itself, there are a few cuts that sorta match up, but the overall footage is just too fast paced. In fact, I wonder if there are any other openings as fast paced as Evangelion's.

I agree! I was lucky that it matched up at all, especially the length. It would be fun to cut a new OP together, if only I had the time...

Can't believe I used to dislike Fly Me to the Moon. What the heck, past-TKoH.
