Both Only Yesterday & When Marnie was There are going to be released stateside. I might consider them, but I'm not sure if they're good or not.

When Marnie was there. . . opinions been more mixed, though not outright negative.

Marnie is an interesting one-- I saw it in a small independent theater in Amherst. Haven't seen the first one you mentioned, so I can't give you any advice on that one-- but if you've got the cash to drop, Marnie's pretty good.

"When Marnie Was There" is beautifully animated. It doesn't have any "wow" fantastic moments but the animation of the simple, earthbound story is incredible. It's an alright story. It won't blow you away but it has some great emotional beats & like I said is a visual treat.
Plus, since there's a high probability it's going to be the last Ghibli theatrical release I would recommend seeing it on a big screen!

"Only Yesterday" is incredible! I really hope we get an official US release! Disney bought the title up years ago during the height of Ghibli/Miyazaki craze but hasn't done anything with it because it's a romance/slice of life film & a short episode deals with the main character experiencing her first period. It's handled in a wonderfully sweet way but you say "period" or "menstrual cycle" in the States & suddenly you have to "protect the children". A weird puritanical country I live in...
