How approach Imiashi's works?

How approach Imiashi's works?
I know FLCL,TTGL,PSG and the recent KLK aren't the most subtle of works but due to the frantic pacing, the 'wacky' animation. gratuitous fanservice and the 'deep' themes, I often wonder if there some reason behind the 'madness'. Maybe I am might not actually be looking for themes, possess very little imagination or I might be taking it too seriously but it seems to me that there is something behind the seemingly mindless entertainment. At face value it appears to be just seemingly mindless entertainment but when I search around the internet, I often find things that I didn't see from my first viewing and all the other details that are thematically appropriate to the story. I know his works are just simply absurd entertainment but how do I approach Imaishi's works despite his seemingly wacky, offbeat style?

Just because something doesn't want to be deep, it doesn't mean it cannot be viewed as such. Does that make it a lie? I don't know. But I think in Postmodernism it would be all right.
An Imaishi-Anime should be approached with an open mind and the will to get entertained.

I only know that I'm not too interested in what Imaishi does. The only works he's done that interest me are the ones he does with Nakashima. (Looking forward to their next collaboration).
So, as for Gurren Lagann and KlK.
They aren't that crazy. You get used to how these series are. The reason they are so crazy is to get people to see it, because it's fun. But even though these series are entertainment, they are also intelligent and well written. The fanservice has thematic relevance in KlK. While still being...yeah, fanservice.
Sometimes I don't get the internet (I don't mean you with this), but you've got everyone saying Eva is pretentious, and when you've got an innocent series like KlK suddenly it's stupid. Complain complain complain. That seems to be the hip thing to do. Fuck the internet.

It may help if you become a fan of animation itself and start learning about the history of it. If you want to get into Imaishi's mindset you have to read up on Yoshinori Kanada who has had major influence on him

Imaishi is all about telling a story with movement and striking poses. His approach is much more along the innocent fun of elder anime, simply making animation for the sake of animation. According Yoshinari described Imaishi's directing style as skanky and perverted (who would have thunk) and he seems to be a fan of western pop culture.
My approach is that of Tarantino movies that I enjoy the style and discovering all the cross references and getting interested in them too. That and just leaning back and letting myself be entertained seems to work well because ultimately that's what entertainment is all about. The man likes to have fun with his work and so do I.

I think I'm going to use the Tarantino argument if some of my friends complain about TTGL or KlK. xD
Tarantino's films aren't super deep, they don't explore the human condition. Pulp Fiction is still a masterpiece. Even Kill Bill is a masterpiece in its own way...It's perfect at what it wants to do!
Thee seems to be some rule that entertainment is automatically inferior to the deep stuff. I just see it as one thing more humans need to express.

I know they aren't supposed to be deep stories but when I lurk in literary or film analysis forums, I keep seeing how some object are a metaphor for life itself. Maybe I might be looking to deep into it, seeing things that aren't really there but the stories that both directors are just that good that I have to know what they are about.

I think there is always a lot to look into in a work. Like I said Tarantino's films and TTGL and KlK are actually pretty intelligent shows.

Thank you Fireball, for the heads up! This series of youtube videos is awesome. A lot of it I already knew from various sources, but this is a perfect summary of all the important people and their styles one should know.
This also serves as a pretty neat introduction into why Anime can be so great. Everybody who calls themselves a fan of animation ought to watch this.
