Rei (voice):
So, you can only find happiness in your dreams.
Shinji (voice):
Then, this isn't reality... this world where no one exists.
Rei (voice):
Yes, it's a dream.
Shinji (voice):
So, I'm not here either.
Rei (voice):
You were trying to remake reality with convenient fantasies.
Shinji (voice):
Is that wrong?
Rei (voice):
You were using fabrications to escape from reality.
Shinji (voice):
Can't I dream alone?
Rei (voice):
That would not be a dream. It would just be compensating for reality.
(Packed theater -> empty theater)
Shinji (voice):
Then... where is my dream?
Rei (voice):
It is the continuation of reality.
Shinji (voice):
Where is... my reality?
Rei (voice):
It is at the end of your dream.
7 MILLION FLASHING IMAGES AND GNR'S NECK ASPLODE
I just rewatched EoE, and found myself, again, scratching my head. What a crazy scene! Although I (sort of) understand what is being talked about here, what is the significance of the theater?
One more question-were the drawings shown after the strangulation scene the same ones shown in Asuka's mind rape?

Has anyone ever been able to deciper this? It still makes absolutely no sense to me and seems (along with most of Shinji and Rei's conversation) completely irrelevant to what's actually going on.

What drinian said is the best I've ever heard.
I shall meditate on this.

It's quite intelligent what Anno tries to explain....
Reality is what we humans create (now atm its kinda getting boring because of lack of imagination....).
When Rei says "at the end of your dreams"... i got the feeling it's like when you find happyness of living (a dreams gives happy tought in a world that is created by your psych).
That's a question i've been questioning already 2 years ... why do humanity live. It's for teh sake of finding happyness. We can create a world of happyness.... nice anarchistic toughts. At least hes trying to give the message of peace in his series, even if herefuse to tell.

To me at least, this seems to be saying that the only way you can truly become happy or even HAVE dreams to begin with is to keep on living, in reality.

I think this relates to the EoTV where Shinji says something like "I can make the world whatever I want...blah blah...I can be happy on rainy days...yadda yadda."
I think in this version, Rei is distinguishing "dreams" from "fantasies". Dreams are akin to plans for achieving goals. Whereas fantasies are musings that you never expect to turn to reality ("using fabrications to escape from reality"). So in terms of the quote above, you might be able to traslate it with something like this:
You see something in reality that you want -->
You "dream" about how to achieve it (ie, continuation of reality)-->
You put the dream into action and achieve your goal (ie, end of "dream").
It relates to the EoTV because when Shinji (or whoever) says "I can be happy on raiy days" he essentially is saying "I can make my desire for happiness = reality."
The empty movie theatre I think is supposed to imply that the audience is now out in the real world doing real things (the end of the dream).
Yes? No?
