Not an in-depth story about the avatars just yet, but here's a frew basic thoughts regarding each one:
The broken frame in the current lead suggests a possible future between Shinji and Asuka that was broken by the Bardiel attack, whereas the one that merely has Asuka's close-up seems to suggest only Asuka's future being broken by the attack. The final image with the Evangelion uses the Eva's horn to visually separate Asuka from Shinji, even visually trapping Shinji in it's shape, carrying on the theme of the broken relationship. Of course, Shinji reaction is absent as a result. I tried to fit both the Eva and Shinji's reaction shot in the same avatar, but I was running out of space.

Also, just so you know, I will probably brighten up Asuka's close-up frame of it's chosen so it's as bright as the other frames.

^ I like where you're going with that, FFF4. My vote would be (although the above analysis for the one using Unit-01 is quite interesting, too).

Time to change avatars again. This time, we'll go back to the old standard (my sig explains their reaction, don't worry if you don't get it...there's only four other people who would).

Though they all deal with the same basic concept, just in different ways. One of the interesting dichotomies I found while watching Evangelion 2.0 was Shinji's different reactions to his responsibilities depending on how they interacted with his relationships. In this case, Shinji's responsibilities and an Evangelion pilot nearly destroyed Asuka. And since Asuka as really never developed into what she was realizing she wanted to socially be like in the movie, she represents a potential that was snatched away from the character. Putting Asuka in the frame really doesn't make this a facade vs. reality in this case, but rather reality vs. what could have been. The tearing of the film at the bottom reveals Bardiel Eva 03, though a horrified Shinji takes the forefront of the picture, place his as more of the resistant culprit in Asuka's temporary demise. (Even though it was the Dummy plug, you know this was running through his head, especially during his conversation with Misato right after the incident.)
