Does anyone know what song Mari is singing at the beginning?

I haven't seen it, but I shall use my psychic powers to guess.

Three Steps Foward, Two Steps Back.

Though, it would be awesome if it were Komm Susser Tod.

[color=blue][Mari's singing "The 356-Step March" by Kiyoko Suizenji. (Thanks for sending me the song, SSD. Made things a lot easier.) The part Mari sings goes:

Ichinichi, ippo. Mikka de sanpo. Sanpo susunde, niho sagaru
Jinsei wa, one-two-panchi...

So is it like a children's song or something?

It kind of reminded me of that one that the Tachikoma's sing at the end of the second series of Ghost in the shell.

IMO, that song illustrates one of the main themes of Rebuild. "3 steps forward, 2 steps back". Facing trials, but still going forward by a little.

Also, it reflects on Mari's plucky nature.

While talking with ath he pointed out that Cutie Honey (in Anno's live action movie) sings the same song that Mari is singing at the beginning of the Rebuild 2.22; has it been already noticed by anyone else?
Does anyone know if this song is actually a popular tune, I never heard anything about it but it seems that Anno liked it a lot.

Mediafire link to the song from Cutie Honey - Ripped by ath, thanks.

Pretty much (at the very least it's traditional one all schoolkids learn) and it's practically everywhere. I recently saw it in some other anime, but I can't remember what it was.

oh right! Ranka Lee pulls out modified (DECULTURE edition :D) version in ep 8 of Macross Frontier.

Everytime I play that portion I get amused.

Here's a bit on Kiyoko Suizenji:

Suizenji-san sings an Enka style which sounds a bit "post-war" to me. I can't tell how old these songs really are, but they don't sound like they are from the 90's. Also, she uses rhythm strongly, and in fact, some of her songs sound like rousing marches, almost. Her voice sometimes punches out stressed notes very hard. I found her singing a little hard to get used to, though I really liked two songs on this album.

I get the impression that her songs are meant for sing-along. Notice the fist she holds in the picture on the album. In performance, her songs are more in the style of the "work song", a variety of enka which is seemingly related to work songs done in the country. Such songs were intended to be rousing and energizing.

Somehow I didn't read Ornette's message quoting Reichu... sorry for my idiocy.

You can find several clips on Japanese and Chinese sites if you search for the Japanese title "三百六十五歩のマーチ".
I've upped one (from youku) to mediafire.

Interesting. I couldn't bring myself to watch the movie, though i did watch the Re:Cutie Honey OVA series out of curiosity. Nice catch.

I guess this could be used as fuel for the "Mari is an android" fanwank.
