Re: Dialogue help!
"old maid" - Shinji's insinuating that because she's like that, she's unmarriageable.
"oh, I don't think so"
The other I can't manage tonight (I'll try again tomorrow when I can turn it up loud). It sounds like "Sher-tain"; I wondered about "sure gain" or "sure take" as possible synonyms of profit, but neither is convincing either as a phrase or listening to her.
No German spoken here (though my son is now a German citizen...), but I suspect you may be able to find verbatim copies of that around.

You're good at this!
That one is kind of hard to catch over the sound of her shoe hitting the locker.
I'm impressed you could hear Shinji with his entire class talking over him.

Re: Dialogue help!
If you can get hold of a German-subbed copy or a file of German subs, I presume that would give the words Asuka speaks in in German verbatim (and presumably they're unchanged in the dub as well).
EDIT - Actually that might not do; I understand that the ADV dub actually had some Japanese translated to German, so that Asuka speaks more German in the dub than in the original.

I recall an interview where Tiffany Grant (English Asuka) said that the German dialogue was mostly her own decision.

Re: Dialogue help!
For the German bits I'll fire up a new thread because the chances of someone who speaks German visiting this thread are quite slim.
Got another English one I'm very stuck on:
Ep 08
09:18
Radio on ship:
"The Cymbeline's gone silent. The Titus Andronicus can't locate the target!"
This line perfectly matches the existing subs, but ADV have added another fast shouty line on the end of that and I can't make it out. The last word is "water"... that's all I've got.

Re: Dialogue help!
We have a few German-speaking users- Blockio, robersora, and Kendrix are the ones I can think of. I haven't seen Kendrix around lately, but Blockio and robersora are active- you could shoot them a PM and ask if they might help (if they don't show up here by themselves sooner or later).

Re: Dialogue help!
Thank you! I've worked out Misato's locker kicking rant!
It's "..pissed off about being cut out of their share of the loot!"
Having "loop" on the end of the template subs threw me off.

Ep 08

Toji:
"this is like ...... fishing".
Sounds like "morland". I don't know if that's a thing and google didn't help. I know nothing about fishing.

Misato:
"He took ... ..... He's probably back at headquarters by now, that jerk!"
Ep 09

Kensuke:
"You're dressed like a .... too"

"marlin"
"he took a powder" Not a phrase I knew, but hey, it exists!

Does Kensuke's line have "again" in it too? It sounds like there's another word in there.
Re: Dialogue help!
Reading this thread without being familiar with the ADV dub, I'm struck by how expressive and lively it is compared to the more restrained, neutral-register translations I'm used to from subtitles. Perhaps that explains some of the appeal that dubs have.

Re: Dialogue help!
I've always preferred dubs because tones of voice can be construed differently in different languages and I understand their tone in my own language.
I'm not sure those tones have been translated accurately though.
For example, I don't know if Ritsuko is supposed to sound sarcastic all the time in the ADV version. Maybe the ADV director thought she'd be more interesting if she was a sarcastic person.
Also, ADV Misato's voice is everything!
I enjoy english expressions integrated into the script in a comical way. A lot of Japanese sayings would go over my head.

Asuka's German dialogue
I'm stuck on Asuka's occasional German words. Any German speakers able to help, please?
Here is a list of the episodes and times of the German dialogue (there's a chance I've mistaken a couple of them for German because I couldn't recognise what she was saying).
I've only done 10 episodes so far.
The times that have no space between them are in the same scene.
Here goes:
***Ep 08:
03:59
04:04
10:18
10:25
11:49
***Ep 09:
21:23
21:46
***Ep 10:
10:03
10:35
11:01
18:00

Sorry, I was a bit rushed: "You're dressed like, alike, again too".

Re: Dialogue help!
Got another obstacle, would be very grateful for help:
Ep 12
09:34
(Female voice from control room with "Hollywood British" accent).
Template says: "send search satellite..."
Sounds like: "send recon satellite..." (is recon a word..?)
9 seconds later it's said again by Aobi and it still sounds like "recon".
09:56
Female Brit voice from control room again:
Sounds like: "Dash transmission complete".
I'm unsure on "dash" because I don't know what it would mean in that context.

Re: Dialogue help!
Yes, it's "recon" - short for reconnaissance.
"Data transmission" - with a very un-British accent!
