Hi, French guy who was almost front row watching it, the color calibration of the screen had no problems and the resolution was so much better than what's on the livestream; can confirm the design was green, the footage definitely is different from the one aired at Shinjuku

I have been checking both supposed versions back to back... It seems the live streamed version simply suffers from poor quality and a messed up contrast.
After passing the Shinjuku recording through some decreases in brightness/contrast/saturation filters I get something close to the live stream... Practically everything seems way darker.
I don't see why they would make multiple versions of the same video anyways...

The first 10 minutes of Anno’s Shin Eva successfully outdoes all of del Toro’s Pacific Rim, as far as the visuals are concerned.

Watching this on Eva Monkey’s livestream has GoatJesus complaining that the first 10 minutes isn’t the whole movie, which is understandable, but not reasonable in any way.

I didn't complain the first 10 minutes aren't the whole movie. I was saying that it was disappointing that they opened on another contextless action set piece rather than opening with more character driven stuff -- especially given it was the first 10 minutes of the film. It didn't subvert expectations in any way since it was exactly how both 2.0 and 3.0 opened and that doesn't bode well for the tone of the rest of the film IMO.

So apologies if I wasn't ecstatic it had nothing to do with the characters I actually care about (Shinji/Rei/Asuka) and defied expectations in no way.

I also said it looked nice. It was a fine action set piece. Just not why I enjoy Evangelion.

To be fair, when I say 'subvert expectations' I don't mean in that Star Wars fandom use where something random needs to happen. I mean just -- doing something slower and character driven in contrast to the previous two films (the expectation is to open up with an action set piece in this case, which it did.) My hope was for this movie to begin with emphasis on character -- not wasting any time. I didn't care for the action because I don't care for the characters (Mari/Will-E) so opening on them with a disorienting camera and choreography without narrative stakes was underwhelming for me. The most important plot element established was Will-E's end gambit: rejuvenation of the world, which was also very expected given Until You Come to Me.

There is a chance the film will be everything I'm hoping it will be. We need to just see the movie, and of course I will. I just rather dislike this opening set piece and fear for the rest of the film tonally. 10 minutes is quite a large chunk, to be frank, I don't think it's unreasonable to have a perspective that is more skeptical about 3.0+1.0 after this.

I love how Eva is still so packed with content.

I get where you're coming from, but I think there are several reasons this works.
1-These movies are more concerned with the world and Humanity as a whole. So I think showing this succesful team effort will be important for the film.
2-This scene serves to pull you out of Shinji's mind. It's sad when you realize he rejected this team of perfectly fine people working on actual solutions while he made things worse, working from his isolation.

Shinji and co will still appear, but these movies like reminding you not all the characters have their mindset (it's one of the reasons Mari works for me).

3.0 had a pretty traditional action scene as an opener and went crazy places, so I don't think we should worry about that.

@GoatJesus: To be fair, my interest was also a little tickled in the direction of AVANT 1 just picking up with Asuka, Shinji and Rei Q. But, as interesting as that would be (and as much as we're all dying to see what happens next with that trio), that's just not how feature-length film pacing is done, ya know? You gotta open your Jaws movie with a shark kill, your Jurassic Park movie with a dinosaur kill, your muder mystery with a murder, etc. So, if course, you also have to open up your Evangelion movie with an Evangelion battle. Anno felt like he had to establish his vehicle to drive the plot with the new Evas and stuff, and that's what he did. And, let's be real, the revelation that Wille can un-core at least parts of Earth is a bigger game-changer than Pirate Asuka IIIINNNN SPAAAAAAAACCCCEEEEE.

This is great set up for some Grade A movie. None of the first 10 minutes of these Eva movies have been very emotional anyway, and I'm even hard pressed to find many episodes of NGE outside of the "DC cuts" where the first 5 minutes is just dialogue scenes, so I'm not sure why I'd be expecting anything different with the Eva movies. Also, Flamingo mariachi bands is a great tone setter, regardless of the film. I'm really digging that mood in this opening.

Makes total sense, but it's also true End of Eva started with Shinji and his state of mind. So it has been done before. I really don't wanna go into End of Eva comparisons though.

The way I see it, Shinji won't have time to be a self loathing mess like in EoE. The people around him won't let it happen. At least I'm getting that feeling that Shinji will get to know the world a little like Mari said in Q, and that'll have a positive influence on him (don't get me wrong, I still think he'll have to deal with lots of shit in general in the movie). So I think it's great the Wille team was established again outside of Shinji's perspective.

Also the contrast will be really great when we pass from this (and whatever comes afterwards if there is something else) to Shinji.

I'm sure most of us wanted to see our mains and I swear I would have cried seeing them, but we are still going to see them. And AVANT1 had its own goal and did that well.

BTW, I expect AVANT2 to also be Wille centered, since Midori (big fan) has a line in that scene. But maybe it's just that Wille picks the trio up already. Or the characters are interwoven otherwsie in this scene.
I'd bet on our boy Shinji and co making an appearance after Avant2 and after the title card.

English title will be You can (not) give up. I think that would fit now.
(Which would be an interesting theme to me, since it's worth debating if it still makes sense to keep fighting in the world Q introduced, and will Shinji even have a choice or will he do whatever he does because he wants to? I can't wait to see what happens.)

^ Yeah, the contrast between Wille's brazen approach to fixing the world and Shinji's emotional distraught is what I find truly enticing. We've had Eva movies (like you said with EoE) where the film mainly focused on Shinji being lonely and violently depressed, but we haven't had an Eva property to date that would intercut that with one of pulling one's own self up by the boot straps. It should be interesting to see what happens when depressed Shinji meets "hack the world back together" Wille.

Hopefully communication will be better than the first time lol. That's one of the things the characters have to learn from. Shinji needs to be less self centered, while the people at Wille need to understand his situation.

I guess this exciting opening could also be there to give a false sense of security, only for us to witness the equivalent to EoE's hospital scene. Though I have the feeling it would be something very different. Shinji is effed here as well, but it's a different sort of effed.
In NGE he actually saw everyone around him break down, while I think here he mostly feels guilt.

I wanted to point to point a few things out:
-> Anno said he often comes to France, presumably to visit Sagisu Shiro? Once he went to the Trocadero and sat down to draw the Eiffel Tower. He claims his drawing didn't pay it justice and he wanted to draw it well and do something important with it. He talks a lot about his love for France. This explains why we got the preview and all.

-> The Eiffel Tower creator's name is Eiffel, Gustave Eiffel. Mari is actually apologizing to Gustave and not the tower.

-> We can't hear it in the stream but someone shouted NIGECHA DAME DA right before Anno's short video and I wonder whether Ogata said it later because of them. The crowd went wild when Mari crushed the Angel with the tower. Most of the attendants seem to have been newcomers to Eva, like at least half of it. When Takahashi asked who watched Eva in 1995, a teenager told his friend "I'm a kid, I was raised on Dragon Ball and not that haha!". Thing is bro we people born in the 80s also grew up with DB xD
