Just saw episode 4 of Gasaraki. Because I hadn't seen it in a long time, I had no idea that Yushiro had a cousin in the military but then again, Gowa family has their fingers in a lot of pies. The big first actual Tactical Armor vs. tanks and soldiers in combat felt somewhat anticlimactic since it resolved so quickly but that will soon change with the first T.A. vs. T.A. battle in the next episode.

Dominion: Late 80's OVA where a new recruit joins the tank police and wrecks havoc through the(almost alien in design) town. Not much to say here other than it being really funny at times and keeping a light tone trough most episodes.
As expected of OVAs from the period, it has some wonderful animation when it comes to all things mechanical.
8/10

Bubblegum Crisis: One of the best 80s soundtrack ever. It's no exaggeration to say the music is almost half the experience. The other half is, of course, the animation. The characters can look kind of stilted in some scenes, particularly in the first episodes, but the mechs and the like are consistently good looking. There's also tons of those moving 2D backgrounds. You can tell they had some money to spend.

As for the story, there isn't much to say, aside from the final episode most secondary characters get introduced, have some super brief interactions with the main cast, and die. You'd think this could be frustrating, but no. It's bare bones, but competent. It helps that the main cast is likable.
8/10

Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches: Surprisingly good, and amusing. First blush it seems like a generic harem with romance elements, but... well it's still that, but it handles itself quite well. Very funny, and a good amount of kissing goes on among characters of various genders, which rounds the whole thing out.
8.75/10

Eva references  SPOILER: Show
There's a Gendo Pose in episode 11. In addition, there is an Instrumentality ending, where Yamada has the ability to make a single wish, any that he wants. After he makes the wish, he comes back to the clubroom, and all the other characters are there. They all congratulate him on what he did (in addition to the banner they set up, which says "Congratulations!".

All this was very nice for me to see. ^_^

^I was reading the comic as Yamada-Kun first broadcast, thought it was the worst kind of dull adaptation the first time around; but after a few months and forgetting most of the early story details however it was a much more pleasant watch the second time.

Hinamatsuri. Episode 11 ended on a gag-cliff-hanger: “Hina has gone missing on a snowy mountain…(!)” and Nitta doesn’t give much of a Monkey’s over the off-screen development.
So, the ending is easy enough to predict- we start with Hina lost on a mountain, she’ll shiver and miss a meal or two, Nitta will come save her ‘cos deep down he misses the cheeky scamp, and will give her a heart-warming head-pat before the end.
Almost correct- Nitta is not part of the rescue, so there’s no real emotional pay-off when we do get the head-pat. A rather flat ending…
The episode essentially wraps-up at the 12 minute mark… but then it keeps on going. Suddenly we’re three years in the future, an epilogue perhaps? No. An entirely new storyline. The red-head introduced in episode 9 is the protagonist now, and a minor supporting character from earlier in the show returns to… why even bother describing it?
The story for this non-main character ultimately doesn’t end, and who would care, really? This is one of the more unusual “now go read the manga” endings I’ve seen.

So, Hinamatsuri; had a couple chuckles here and there, but nothing particularly memorable. The star of the show was undoubtedly Anzu; might be a half-interesting fan project to piece together only the scenes involving her mini-story: Episode 2 part 1, E3P1, E4 and E6P2. Therein lies a better show.

Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody, yet another Isekai toon, with a terrible, long title thrown in for good measure.
All of the regular tropes are present: overpowered, vidyagaem-savvy, uninteresting main character; insta-harem; bland, European medieval fantasy world. Nothing fresh or interesting.
One grossly uncomfortable, new thing this show does brings to the genre is the character: Arisa, the 11-year-old slave and wannabe sexual predator.
Oh! But it’s okay- she actually has the mind of a reincarnated adult, only in a child’s body. That makes it kosher, right?
Awful.
Why am I even watching? Because I can’t exercise without something playing in the background, and I’ve already watched everything else in the Crunchy library that might remotely interest me…

Rewatching Utena!
It's a show that deserves a second watch.

Kuribo's right, because it's a masterpiece that will not only entertain you, but also make you a better human being.
So if you have already seen them, follow kuribo's excellent example and rewatch them!
Also, have you seen all of Anno's works, including his Live Action movies?

Ok, so the season is drawing to a close. I haven't been watching this many seasonal Anime since Fall 2016... so all is well, I guess :)
DarliFra and FoolyTwoly are still ongoing... But they have respective threads anyway.

Still ongoing, but extremely entertaining is the current season of
Lupin III (Part V).
Despite having experienced a significant downgrade in overall animation quality from Lupin 2015, this year's iteration grabbed me immediately for two reasons:
the writing & the setting are much more modern.
While boasting an animation showcase to behold, Lupin 2015 had painfully "old" feeling plots executed not playfully enough to keep me entertained. It felt like if Cowboy Bebop never happened to episodic storytelling in Anime. I've watched like 8 Episodes which quite frankly bored me, because I felt like I already knew how they would turn out. To make matters worse, every Episode featured a new conflict killing even the possibility of more escalating tension, or an emergence of complex situations.
In contrast this year's Lupin features two long arcs which ramp up the tension to eleven during their run,
and two one-offs, which are much more goofy and playful in their execution - relying on great character chemistry and over the top situations to keep my interest.
Also, the setting in the first arc is something that immediately hooks me. Lupin in the current year with current technology shenanigans, pulled off so in a flawless fashion, amazing.
The second long arc was kinda slow at the start, but immediately ramped up the tension keeping me on the edge of my seat, which is something very few shows manage to pull off.
The first one-off was extremely goofy, almost like a children's show - but in a good way, lots off fun, while the second one was a little more serious, but felt a lot like a comic by Don Rosa, which I adore.
Wonky animation quality aside, if this shows manage to keep coming with those amazing scripts, this will be an easy 8/10.
Also, it's kinda cool seeing present day Europe depicted in Anime.

Nah, Hinamatsuri was decent.
It rows perfectly into the recent surge of competent, solid, very good comedy Anime, like Sakamoto-kun and Konosuba. This was not a cynical or rushed production I could tell, that the staff actually cared about the show. This resulted in a production quality that was way above your usual Anime shit.
And it used it's great production values to great effect, since it managed to make me laugh more than once - be it through amazing facial expressions, great animation, or simply just on-point comedic timing. Despite me not being into Lolis, the designs of the cast is perfect. Also the script was really solidly written, I especially appreciate the characters going through arcs, which results in some really nice character moments. It also gives the show the opportunity to move on from one joke quickly, which in turn keeps the show funny and fresh. Oh yeah, and the cast had a great dynamic.
8/10

I still watched plenty of seasonal bullshit tough :ehh:

And boy, do I have almost nothing to say about this season. It's not because there isn't good stuff out there, in your post you wrote about Hinamatsuri and Lupin, which I agree, are both great, but I don't have anything to say about those shows, at leat nothing you haven't already said.

Still, and although the season still isn't over, here are the few thoughts I do have:

Grancrest Senki: Great ideas, uneven execution, that's all. This show frustrated me in various moments as it has many great moments, but sometimes poor execution. The many problems that assault this anime constantly are:

-Extremely inconsistent animation, it goes from Sakuga moments to hilariously terrible stick figurines in seconds
-Not enough episodes. This adaptation, despite having over 20 episodes, probably needed 40, many moments are rushed
-Too many characters that get barely any screen time, results from the previous problem.

Yeah, despite that, said good moments that aren't destroyed by the previous problems do exist and the soundtrack is great.
I wouldn't recommend it to anyone though
7/10,probably 4/10 for most people.

Tada kun wa Koi wo Shinai: A romance that didn't grab me at all. A shame, because the show is really pretty, but I didn't fell anything at the pure love being presented. Oh well.
5/10

WIXOSS final season:

Guy 1: How do we do an epic conclusion to the various seasons of WIXOSS?
Guy 2: Have all the characters participate?
Guy 3: But we only have 12 episodes. How are we supposed to develop all those cha-
Guy 1: Guy 2, you're a genius.
Guy 3: But-
Guy 1: C'mon, we have slaves, er i mean animators to work to death!
5/10

Saredo Tsubimito: The animation is sub par, the exposition is awkward, the music is just OK, but the two main characters insult each other in funny ways, so it's all forgiven!
I exagerate, but only slightly, the best episode in the show is the one where a bunch of characters get together and get drunk and play games, it's hilarious. The story is fine, but it was carried completely by the characters for me.
Also, they have Norio Wakamoto as one of the villains, so that was cool.
7/10

Cutey Honey Universe: A surprisingly faithful adaptation of the original manga, with its own original ending. Its no Gainax Cutey Honey, that's for sure, but it carries its own charm. Do prepare yourself for typical Nagai humour, and wonky animation though.
7/10

Megalo Box: It was always going to be a difficult task, making a follow up to Ashita no Joe. The original is legendary, and it’s been decades since its ending, but against all odds they somehow made it, a worthy follow up to Ashita no Joe.
It isn't as good as the original, but it didn't need and couldn't be, and that's okay.
9/10

---

I also watched one OVA

Kyuuketsu Hime OVA: By the description I read, I thought this was going to be about a teenager killing vampires and saving people. I was wrong.
Not only is the heroine not a heroine at all, but the tone is much darker than I anticipated.
Also worth nothing, the aesthetic is great. It’s not Avant Gard or anything, but the visuals get fittingly weird when needed. Other than those moments, it looks good, if sometimes a bit dull.
It doesn’t have a proper ending, as expected of an OVA, but the episode they end at does make for a good conclusion
8/10

---

Pretty good season overall, even if there were some really bad anime in the middle.

Once again, lets hope the next season is good!

So, the season comes to an end, and pretty much everything has aired its last episode (late-shifters like DarliFra aside); and the one episode of (Don't Lewd the) Horse Girls I watched just makes it so that I did see more episodes of Spring titles than I could count on the fingers of one hand. Very little that was on offer appealed, and of those tried, none really caught.

The carry-over series I did watch -- Toji no MIko -- ended with an interesting take on the idea of setting everything up for climactic final battle, then spending the last episode just talking, which turned out to be quite a satisfying way for it to resolve (plus, what I gather was a hat-tip in the direction of Kannadzuki no Miko in the final scene). Despite the loss of momentum for a few episodes after the mid-boss battle, and shift from it being just two girls on the run, all in all, it was a decent series for cute girls, cute aradama, and sword-fighting; and a surprisingly overlooked one.

Meanwhile, I've returned to the backlog, and resumed ClassicaLoid, which is at its best when it's just sit-com fluff; and started Majestic Prince, which has passed the three-episode test as a no-nonsense mecha series -- and one, amazingly, that manages to overcome its Hirai sameface.

MegaloBox:
While Megalobox is at its core an age old tale often told, the execution and cast are what elevates this show into "worth a watch" - tier. They don't manage to keep the initial jaw-dropping visual quality quite as consistently high overall, in the end MegaloBox is one of the coolest looking shows this decade. I am a sucker for this dirty lo-fi aesthetic, which happens to be a perfect fit for the underdog-story it tells. Aurally it features some really cool beats and raps, though I would have wished for more diversity overall. The cast in Megalobox is portrayed in a sufficiently nuanced way, clearly showing empathy for people who are enslaved to the system, struggling to find their place in a broken world. A world in which the worries of the rich deserve an as equally earnest treatment as those of the poor do. The sentiment, that in a broken system material wealth doesn't make you happier - just less miserable - inherently appeals to me.
7/10

Hisone to Masotan
I really don't care for military settings, especially when they are portrayed as those cozy, familyesque places to work. Hisone to Masotan dips really hard into this (personal) disconnect, similar to SoRaNoWoTo. But, never underestimate the power of competent directing - which is a deliciously rare treat in Anime. Nevertheless, I could hardly contain my cringe at times, due to the show's propensity for melodrama which is fittingly heightened to the use of obnoxious instrumentation. Hisone to Masotan roars high at times - funny, well written dialogue meets a beautifully inspired visual execution. At other times it falls embarrassingly low - scenes full of trite pathos while a painfully emotionally one-sided flat OST blares over all of it.
Over all, I'm just happy that shows like this still get made. Full of passion and competence. As long as those ingredients exist in the world of Anime, the next lighting in a bottle can't be too far off.

Revolutionary Girl Utena series/movie

I confess I never watched this in the hey day but I can see why it's massively popular because of how it questions gender and sexuality and I loved some of the visuals and the style its so clever and different.

SPOILER: Show
I did like the clever twist they did with Anthy in that she wasn't a doormat she is in reality an abuse victim who is deeply passive aggressive and turns on Utena because she's sick of being used by everyone and despite that Utena is her friend she's suffered so much pain that she lashes out and its clear she's also clearly confused by her own sexuality and feelings hence her frustrations of saying Utena reminded her of Dios when she loved him but she can never be a prince because she's a girl.

My only nit pick is I hated the ending in that Anthy/Utena could reconcile fully and it feels very much like the bury your gays trope even though Anthy hints she will find Utena and goes off to have her own life free from the bonds of the school. I realize the ending is a product of its time but is also sadly an issue Japanese anime still suffers from (Looking at you Darling and the Franxxs) were as western media is slowly moving away from this hurtful trope.

The movie though more than makes up for the series ending its like this totally unapologetic gay/bi fest that pulls no punches and has a much happier ending. I can see why it was made as I can imagine the fan backlash over the series ending not being great hence they made it as canon correction.

Ooh, I plan to see Utena within the next week or so (the movie, as the series kinda bored me to be perfectly honest). Suppose I should wait till then to read the spoilers, heh.

A Certain Scientific Railgun S

Episode 3
SPOILER: Show
I do love how deeply they're going into the Sisters project; and of course, Tree Diagram is the Science side's version of the Tree Diagram used by the in-universe Roman Orthodox Church (essentially the Catholics, I suppose...). That is, its primary goal is as a tool to reach God. Just like SEELE's "Tree Diagram" on which they crucified Yui. 'Cept here, they're crucifying the Sisters (Misaka's clones), and sacrificing them by pitting them against Accelerator, and allowing them to die en masse that his abilities may increase, and he may achieve the hitherto impossible height of Level 6 abilities.

Here's a shot (from A Certain Magical Index II, which if watched in airing order, comes before Railgun S) of one of the Sisters in her incubator, looking suspiciously like Rei in the Reiquarium (even a similar color of the liquid):

Utena is one of the great anime.
I didn't really get what your issue with the ending is, the way I see it

SPOILER: Show
the "revolution" that takes place is Utena rejecting Akio's sexist ideals to the point she literally leaves his world. I loved that. Anthy follows suit, while Akio is just confused at all this due to his narrow vision of the world.
I actually didn't necessairily see Utena and Anthy as a gay pairing (the definitely are in the movie though). I once got called out for this on tumblr, like I got called a cunt lol. Even though I'm not saying my interpretation is THE ONE, it's just how I honestly saw it. I'm rewatching the show, so my opinion might change. Not that they couldn't be gay, I just felt there were no direct hints.
Anyways, what was your issue with the ending exactly?I actually feel it's pretty much the same as the movie ending, the movie just tells everything in a very condensed way, and then also shows that the world Utena and Anthy escape to isn't perfect either (you can see it at the end in the background), implying their future will be an upwards battle, much like EoE actually.
If you liked Utena, I really recommend Yurikuma Arashi by the same director. IMO it doesn't reach the same level, but it's very good. Now that show is gay as hell lol. Has a great message too.

Thank you for this and a lot of those things I did like and agree on also thank you for the recommendation. ^_^

SPOILER: Show
I think the difficulty I had with the ending comes from maybe my teenage years in the 90's as on one of my favourite shows which was Xena Warrior Princess it has an ending similar to Utena like one woman is stuck on another plain of existence while her partner/lover and friend has to wait to till she returned as she had to free so many souls on the other plain of existence and they never say how long her partner will have to wait.

It really hurt me watching that because I like a lot of people wanted that together ending and happiness not the limbo and I think the issue is when I was watching Utena maybe I felt that again and couldn't help think off that throw back and how much it hurt. I will re-watch the last episode again as I think I missed that small detail where you say they meet again in the credits like EOE.

Its also really bad that some one on tumblr called you that as that's not cool on any level its why I left the website some years back and don't pay attention to it any more as I hate the website toxic elements and the thing about anime is sometimes its deeply subjective in how you read the themes so to some people Anthy/Utena may just be friends where as to another they may read in to it a gay couple like I did. Nether view is wrong, its just a matter of perspective

Now I know what you meant!

SPOILER: Show
I agree it's sad Utena and Anthy are separated, but I see the ending more as a metaphor for leaving Akios ideals behind. So that's why it takes Anthy more effort than Utena, she was completely brainwashed by Akio since she was a child, but even her can see the truth in the end and leave. I'd say it's strongly implied both will find each other again. :)
Btw, that last scene of Anthy leaving moved me to tears lol, it is so well done in conjunction with the music (that music track is called Baisier). Another scene that had me tear eyed is episode 37 I believe, after Anthy tries to jump from the building and Utena tells her she couldn't leave Anthy behind, with the music track Hikarisasu Niwa-Illusion, it's a scene that encapsulates so well what the show is about.
Btw, another theme I got from Utena was that of your believes being shattered. Utena is very opimionated due to her encounter with the Prince, but then that prince turns out to be manipulative, in that case, are her convictions even hers? That was so interesting to me, and it's something so potentially scary, but I think in the end Utena takes what she got from her childhood encounter regardless but improves on herself.
And yeah, tumblr has some agressive people lol, but it's too late for me haha. I enjoy the site and have quite a bit of followers there.
I actually understand that Utena as a gay character was probably important to this person, and it's easy to get passionate about that stuff, but I didn't mean any harm, I just talked about the show how I understood it, anything else would have been dishonest. And I'm also open to being corrected, I don't stubbornly stick to one opinion, so I didn't quite get that reaction.

Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"

Ah yes I see that hint now I missed that before.

SPOILER: Show
Yeah I found that thing about beliefs really fascinating because its a very true theme that is not always picked up on in that your beliefs can be shattered and sometimes you have to rebuild yourself and take your own path and I did love Anthy's fuck you to her brother in the last episode and how confused he was over no longer having power over her. I also think that was bold of them to show Anthy as a woman of colour as that's so rare in anime and there were some scenes that broke my heart in the series.

Like at the dance when they tour of her dress its dark, cold and scary and you realize how lonely this woman really is and how she's punished by others just for being the Rose Bride even though she has no control at that point over her fate she just gives in and lets people hurt her. Also as you mentioned the scene where Utena stops Anthy jumping that pulled on my heart strings big time

Honestly I don't think what you said on tumblr was wrong I think people just get really intense on there sometimes and I think its the issue with social media in that people forget an avatar is a real person

Yup, and sadly thete was one case of an official keychain that toned down her skin color a lot.

This is very true, and I might have been guilty of that myself during my teen years lol. I wasn't rude to anybody who wasn't being an ass, but there is no excuse in any case.

Honestly I hate it when people do that with merchandise it reminds me of how Disney toned down Mulan's, Jasmines and Pocahontas skin in there merchandise runs in the 90's and 2000's its just plain insulting and all of these skin colours in male and female characters should be celebrated and loved not turned more white.

We've all made mistakes like this I think its part of being human all that really matters is learning from them and doing better ^_^

Highschool of the Dead episode 6

Fanservice galore and I am eternally grateful for it!!! ^_^ Especially Saeko cooking for Takeshi in her apron with barely anything underneath.

As for the drama of police and protestors, I felt sorry for the officer in charge who felt no choice in the end but to leave his family behind and end it all with an army of "them" and protestors breaking down the barricade.
