As I said in the currently watching thread, I dropped this. It just has nothing to keep me interested.

Havent sen that yet because I'm a few episodes behind but I knew something odd was going on here, the fact that young Haruhi still met John Smith meant that all was not as it seemed.

But yeah, this does actually seem kind of different then the dissapearance timeline. Yuki seems slightly less introverted and more clumsy in this world. Not to mention the continuity differences between the two timelines. So the question is what caused this? Is this just a split off timeline alternate universe of dissapearance or did something else happen?

Funny someone posts something in this thread as I am currently watching the show.

Right now on episode 16 and I plan to finish it soon.

It's pretty good so far, but at the current part I am at it's getting dragged out for plot reasons.

It's based on a manga that's a non-canon spin-off based on the AU from Disappearance novel.

Started watching 'The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan' about two weeks ago, and I'm totally in it, if only for Haruhi, as well as having an alternate version of Ryoko Asakura around, who's actually not psychotic and scares me to death, just when I think of her. I swear, I was looking for a Haruhi figure, but almost got one of Asakura, just to calm her down, hoping to not get stabbed.

Now, while I was at it, I tried watching the second season of the original anime (including 'Endless Eight'). I like, how they at least tried to have different animations for each episode, but seriously... couldn't they have sticked closely to the light novel this time around? Also loved that moment, when Kyon almost lost his temper during the shooting of the SOS Brigade's movie, and Haruhi was really scared/afraid for a second.

'Nyoro-n Churuya-san' was quite disappointing, after having watched the hilarious 'Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi-chan', and chibi Achakura being responsible for some of the series' funniest scenes.

I think I might drop nagato yuki chan since from what i have seen it doesnt look like this show is going anywahere, last episode was the one where they wrapped up the nagato split personality storyline, what was that even about? Did I miss something it seems like it was never explained what was going on with that.

So i finally sit and watched all the episodes during the past week (robersora i am sorry i couldn't write weekly updates).

As a Haruhi fan (i watched only the anime), watching the show somehow felt like returning home. Seeing all the characters back in the Literature Club hit all the right notes for me. Sometimes when Haruhi was around it really felt like a S3 (especially the early episodes). Not only that but hearing the old cast again and understanding the references from the previous show (there are a lot) and have everyone being themselves in a slightly diffirent way (okay Yuki a lot) made this show an exciting ride for me.

I must say that the ''Dissapearence of Nagato Yuki-chan'' arc was really the most boring part for me despite being everyone's else favorite. But i can see why. Haruhi was nowhere around and i couldn't stand this Yuki for 2 reasons. First because i like her more when she is more shy and funny (previous episodes) and the other reason is that despite being serious and formal she didn't have that ''magic'' that the other Yuki had from the previous show(people who watched Haruhi anime will understand). The only part i liked was the confession part which was really well done. Kyon's confession sucked big time tho.

Aside from this as i said earlier i enjoyed the show. Kyon was the same so in other words he was awesome, Koizumi also (guy is hilarious to watch, always behind Haruhi), Mikuru was exactly the same but she had a smaller part and last but not least Asakura. Asakura has the biggest role after Yuki and Kyon and i was really surprised because she turned out to be a lovely, funny character and a friend for Yuki (oh the irony here....)

I won't lie though. For me Haruhi made the show. Maybe because of the nostalgia or maybe because it has been a long time since we last seen her but when she was around the show was overall more interesting and funny. It's not that without her it couldn't have been a good show but when she is around all the spotlight goes on her so i guess it can't be helped.

I am looking forward to the OVA and of course crossing fingers for a S2 (because there is no way we are getting more Haruhi in the future...)

The original is very well worth watching; essential, even. I also liked the second season, even the "endless eight" episodes - which are, let's say, contentious. The film The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is really excellent.

The recent addition to the franchise of The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan I found disappointing, and didn't finish. It was bland and uninteresting.

It was one of the early and high profile adaptations from a light novel series rather than a manga, and became one of those series that achieved great popularity, so watching to see what people are on about might be a reason.

It throws in pretty much everything and the kitchen sink too, so some of what it presents may stick. Personally, I found S1 at best harmless fluff that always drifted down to the end of the queue of what I was watching at the time (I didn't finish the one cour's worth of episodes until a couple of months after the show had aired, and not for waiting on subs as was the case for the other high profile series from Spring '06 like Simoun or Higurashi), and had no interest in the later outings -- though watching the fans get trolled by S2 from its announcement to the end was entertaining at the time.

Yeah well if I was a reviewer popularity would be the number one reason to watch it, I'm still trying to figure out what it is and if the novels are the best version or if the anime is a thing on its own etc. I'm going back to anime and novels after a long time and the wishlist just keeps piling up. Actually I've yet to find something with closure

View Original Postunz wrote:Actually I've yet to find something with closure
It's a bit of a cliché, but the "Japan doesn't into endings" thing has a basis in reality here, when most anime are partial adaptations of on-going print series, perhaps with the dreaded anime original ending tacked on. If you want endings that complete a series, you're better off looking for original anime, or possibly adaptations of already completed source material that cover it to the end. And even there you have to beware of the original series that imply more material somewhere later down the line if conditions are fine; or adaptations of serial source material that ran into the sand rather than coming to a natural end.

The Haruhi LNs themselves are a "ran into sand", though the anime and movies haven't quite adapted everything in the series -- just that there's not enough left unadapted to make a full cour (never mind the career wrecking moves of Hirano Aya in the years since).

It's been a while since I've seen the anime or read the novels, but it really depends on the story being told.
SPOILER: Show
For example, I would have to say the anime version of story where they fight the giant camel cricket (can't remember the title) is better than the actual story. The latter's version of the climax feels anticlimatic compared to the show. On the other hand, the print version of "Remote Island Syndrome" is better than the show as they left out some details such as the entire gang getting pissed drunk.

I think there's enough material for at least one cour (all of the anime covers only through the middle of the fifth novel). The problem is how to present on the screen some things, especially the last three books as

So nagato yuki chan is still dropped for me, did they ever explain what the deal was with the split personality arc? That just seemed to come out of nowhere with no real explanation. Did the plot ever go anywhere? Did Nagato yuki ever actually dissapear? Watching this show to me feels like Inou battle that promises supernatural battles everyday but in actuality only has two really short battles in the entire series. The cake is a lie! There are no actual dinosaurs in this theme park! Unless it happened sometime after I dropped the show, so did she ever dissapear then? Having a split personality pop up for no reason for a few episodes doesn't count as dissapearing to me.

It's just the wishlist piling up otherwise most stuff I read/watched is incomplete and I'm in in for the art (blame! and knights of sidonia scale, blade of the immortal combat, jyoshikohei tension...) or storyrelling (domu).
I'm more of a manga dude and always come back to those but if there's a better version of the same thing I'll go for that one.

I have read a couple of light novels, and am a big fan of the anime. Honestly, the anime is much better. The content is essentially the same, but you get fantastic animation along with great acting. The anime is the way to go. If you're pressed for time, just watch the first season, the first episode of the second season, and then the movie and skip everything else.
