Oh, believe me, you noticed, it's pretty much impossible not to. It was easily half of Menma's hangup, with her even referring to herself one in the film.

If you're blanking on it, it's likely due to them calling it "Nokemon" in-universe. It's pretty clear though what they're alluding to, both with the devices they use to play it:

(Nintendo Gameboy Advance SPs)

And what the art for this game looks like, which is done in Pokemon's iconic grid-style (same to the dialog boxes):

SPOILER: Show

Also, trade-evolutions, the first thing they try to get Menma to move on, and a Pokemon staple. Not that *I* knew that either 10 years ago... Again, I winz teh Hachiman points?

I haven't seen the movie yet, but as far as the series goes, I'd never expect a show about dealing with death would start out with a girl rubbing her butt on a dude's lap causing him to orgasm (probably) at the dining table in front of his father in the first 30 seconds of the fucking first episode.

I read that supposedly Mari Okada (the writer) wanted to include more of these sexual comedic moments, but was overruled by the rest of the production staff or something like that and I think in this case that was probably for the best.
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996

Doesn't mean I recognised them. With no knowledge of Pokemon other than its name and a curious yellow creature, there is nothing in my mind for the obvious references to link to other than "game". Would your grandparents get them?

Well, my grandfather knows what a Gameboy is, I know this for certain as he's referred to it by name. This was likely due to myself and his other grandchildren using them around him enough to get the gist. He's also familiar with the Pokemon card game, just because we tried to get him involved, as he's an avid playing card user at any rate (of Pinochle and a few poker deck games... so long as it isn't poker).

Whether he'd recognize the video game on sight, probably not. Additionally, I've never known him to watch anime. About the only thing he's probably seen is, incidentally enough, small snippets of PokemonTV!.

Additionally, there's a scene of her coming out of the shower, and Jintan becoming aware of "ah, you didn't really develop there".

Actually, no!

He's also familiar with the Pokemon card game, just because we tried to get him involved,

My children predated such games, my first tranche of grandchildren I had not so much contact with, and my second tranche of grandchildren are still too young (and live in a different country). The knowledge I have of such games comes from what I pick up in passing in this and one other forum over the past few years.

Fractional stories; should have been just one. Bl

Postby Alaska Slim » Mon Jun 15, 2015 2:29 am

Fractale

Had this one on the back burner for a while, was surprised by how short it turned out to be.

This series had some pretty good world building, the avatar usage (the Dopples), the augmented reality that, once stripped away, reveals a spartan scenery, the use and maintenance if the Fractale network, etc.

To be honest, I underestimated the role of the Dopples as I thought the ones standing in for Clain's parents were merely AIs, meant to imply that they were dead and he simply used them to fill the absence.

But... His parents weren't dead. The Dopples were stand ins for parents who were very much alive. Whether they were being controlled directly or indirectly by Clain's parents (I couldn't tell which), that there were flesh & blood people behind them, clearly distinguished it as a commentary on social media. And as the Dopples themselves talked, it became equally clear that their way of life *wasn't* simply incidental, that there was a ideological underpinning to all of this.

This realization helped me to get into to a show I thought was otherwise off to a slow start. I also thought for certain that this issue was what the series was going to address, especially after hanging a lantern on the issue yet again when the crew of the Danan starting yapping on how great it was to do things "together"...

But I was wrong. This never becomes a real focal point for the series. It barely even registered beyond episode 5. The series ends up mentioning several issues pertaining to information technology becoming more and more integrated into daily life, most of them appearing in passing during the Xanatu city episode, such as...

The cost of lack of tactile feedback, the superficiality born out of widespread anonymous communication, how the former erodes genuine human compassion for others, the growth of hedonism in an abundant world, etc.

But just like the Dopples issue before them, they each fade in, then out. Nothing is really concluded.

Clain was at one point asked by the Lost Millenium leader to settle on what he believed in, and then fight for it with all he had. But by the series end, I still didn't know what that belief was. I don't, as a viewer, know what Clain was supposedly meant to be standing for.

In an earlier moment that simply stunned me, Clain outright calls the members of Lost Millenium murderers, and this right before he goes to the temple to join the fight himself. His description of them, right or wrong should have exposed some base conviction of his, but I didn't really see one. Instead, I just saw a kid objecting, angrily, to how the plan formulated by the girl he liked, along with her good intentions, were being so forcefully discounted.

The show however sort of rallied around his words, acting as if Clain had been describing some unspoken elephant in the room, a "truth" the other characters who had far clearer convictions than he could reciprocate.

I was really put off by this, and it's what finally convinced me that the show didn't really have a message; certainly not one it was conveying very strongly.

Thus, (long winded explanation all finished) I find I agree with the common criticism of the show: Fractale sought after so many ideas that it failed to coalesce any of them, and simply comes across as superficial. It relied more on shock value in its pivotal moments than any sort of substantive reinforcement of a common theme... A theme which would be very difficult to pin down.

What I'll probably take away the most from this show, was that it's the 3rd anime I've seen to pair a Roman Catholic Church expy with some weird-ass technology. That's a trope I can't wrap my head around, but for whatever reason, it sure seems popular.

Equally, that painfully forced ED of Japanese woman singing in Engrish in her best attempt of an Irish accent. If it weren't so deliciously ludicrous, I'd say kill it with fire. -o-;

High School of the Dead episode 1

As an on/off zombie fan who doesn't like The Walking Dead pretty much for the reasons George A. Romero commented on, I felt like this was a spectacular throwback to the old school outbreak scenarios and it had authentic reactions on what people would do in these situations like would you let a BFF get eaten to save yourself, would you kill yourself in denial of the impossible becoming possible, would you kill your best friend who got bit especially if that same person is asking you to do it. I know i'm overthinking it a little but I feel that this could be a gateway to me liking all things zombie again. Also, the students who do fight back have interesting ways with the weapons they are dealt with.

Yamakan saved anime with this series -- by defining a new metric for how well your product sells (883 units = 1 fractale).

The Catholic Church (directly or in expy) has long been a staple for the niche of mysterious and exotic organization -- that crazy outfit from the Far West has been serving that purpose in anime for 40 years at least.

No comments about the actual ending? That seemed to be the most controversial bit of the series, in all the discussion I've read.

and the guy who directed that exploitative, pornographic piece of garbage also directed the excellent Death Note and awesome Attack On Titan. . . how?

Save yourself the grief, quit while you are ahead.

SPOILER: Show
The fanservice and booblage gets SO out of hand, to the point where it goes from fanservice into straight up hentai. the characters range from stupid and one note and not very interesting, to Jar Jar Binks level unlikable and annoying. and the series ending is open ended and just plain unsatisfying. Without any semblence of closure.

Really the only reason I kept up with it to the end is because it's literally the only Zombie apocalypse anime that's EVER been made (well, one of the two, Attack On Titan is basically giant zombies in a LOTR style setting). Which I think is a shame, because there is a lot of potential in a Japanese Zombie apocalypse. The themes you could tackle, the social commentary you could bring to the table, the way you could examine the way Japan reacts to a Pandemic Crisis vs America etc.

But it just seems noone in Japan (or at least the Anime industry) is really interested enough in the Genre to do anything substantial with it, beyond using it as an excuse to show Gore and T&A. Which is a shame. Yeah, HOTD touched on a few themes that could have been examined in a much better anime, but they took a backseat to all the crappier parts of the series.

Also, MATRIX. GAINAX. BOOB.

To paraphrase Gigguk. Breasts. Do. Not. Do. This!

I want a Zombie apocalypse Anime that takes itself seriously. Something like Akira but with Zombies. Little to no T&A, a semi realistic to 100% deadly serious tone, politics and social commentary on Japanese culture responding to the plague throughout.

and glorious amounts of human on zombie gore.

But Japanese audiences just aren't interested in the genre enough , and with Anno saying anime is going to die in less than a decade, we're likely never going to see one.

Which is a matter of opinion, of course. It does what it set out to do. If that's your thing it is, if not . . . sorry?

It's like criticizing Grindhouse or Machete for being exploitation films. Of course they are, but criticizing them on that basis is somewhat missing the point.

Tokko of course, wasn't worth mentioning. I only do so now in memory of Karou, the show-stealing ex-Yakuza cop.
