Not all; there are people here who like the dub too. Obviously the Japanese has the huge merit of being directed by Anno, but that's not so much comfort to some of those who simply don't understand it and find reading subs a real distraction from other aspects of viewing.

I acknowledge that a dub is two steps away from the original (translation and performance), but then, even subs are one step away (translation), and dub performances are not necessarily bad.

Which makes me really curious to hear the overhauled dub for Q since it seems to be at least supervised by Anno. I can't state enough that all the changes in script that'll be made will directly affect the way (I at least) interpret the story, since those lines will show where the interpretation has been wrong.

Then again, there's also the possibility that there will be a lot of Engrish.

Lol, the German dub was even farther away as it translated from the English dub. But as I was twelve, when I first watched Eva, I was so blown away by the visuals alone, that I watched it dubbed too. And looking back, the German dub isn't that bad. I can't tell how the English dub turned out to be, since I watched only snippets, but I it also might be not bad. I think the problem is, that the performances of the Japanese cast are so outstanding, that every other dub falls short by default.

The only problem with watching the English dub over a Japanese dub is when we do start to try to analyze performance. Sure, you can like whichever you want. Life is short, so watch whichever you want. But when it comes to analyzing the characters through the performances given by the actors (performance is only one aspect of character analyzation, there are other ways) people who listen to the foreign language dub tend to have different opinions about the character than if they were to listen to the original language dub.

I remember the Nostalgia Critic was going through his Disneycember bit again earlier, and reviewed a ton of Miyazaki films in the process. He’d mostly site the English dub of the movies, which I didn’t find too bothersome until he noted that San in Princess Mononoke “sounded too whiney.” That’s when I had to stop and think “Is the Critic criticizing the English dub performance given by Claire Danes, which was adapted by Neil Gaiman and directed by Jack Fletcher? Or is he criticizing Yuriko Ishida’s performance, which was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki?” Every other thing the NC sited in the film he prefaced as being of Miyazaki’s influence, but within terms of the voice acting he wasn’t that specific. As I result I was confused, but ended up concluding that since I only watched the Japanese dub and never considered San all that whiney, that the NC must be discussing the derivative English performances.

I also remembering watching the Spanish dub for The Dark Knight just for kicks and giggles, and thought that the Joker’s dubbed voice sounded too macho and sexy, and was nowhere near what Heath Ledger brought to the roll. Should I blame that on Heath Ledger and Chris Nolan? No. I should specify which dub I heard and place the blame where it belongs.

This isn’t to say that no one who watches the alternate dubs to a movie shouldn’t critique the dub performances, or use it to interpret the characters in the movie. But we should probably use the original dub or language track of anything we watch as the default in our discussions, and specify which dub we watched only if it wasn’t from the original filmmakers. When I talk about the Joker’s character in the American produced The Dark Knight, I don’t expect people to think I talking about a derivative performance track in Spanish. I think the same should apply to foreign works, using the original as the default and only specifying which dub you’ve listened to when you are using the derivative track as a reference.

For whatever reason, the characters just felt too distant when watching in a language I didn't understand. (...) Point of the story? I don't know, I guess I would suggest giving both audio tracks a fair chance

I understand a fair amount of Japanese, so, not a problem.*

Your "point" seems to implicitly assume that someone critical of the dub must not have given it a "fair chance". I sure as hell gave it a "fair chance". I got the DVDs years before I joined any forums (i.e., before I could be inducted into the sacred circle of socially-reinforced dub-bashing) and, naturally, listened to the other audio track out of curiosity. On the whole... pretty bad. Not even good enough to put on while I'm in the kitchen chopping vegetables. I would've liked that option, you know.

I suppose you may have missed my post reviewing the 3.0 dub, where I actually concede (!) that some of the performers got better. But I definitely could not say this of Mr. Spencer. My bf, who doesn't even dislike the original ADV dub, thought Spencer's performance had gotten worse. I honestly couldn't tell.

* Of course it wasn't always this way. And having more recently watched things in languages that I don't understand at all, I understand what is meant by feeling a distance from the performance. But my own response to this is not wanting to hear the performances overdubbed into English. It's to repeat the process of multilingual exposure again and again, so that, eventually, the alien becomes familiar. It's the least I can do as a degenerate monolingual American.

I don't care what anyone says, this is not trolling, dammit!

You're the one who claimed you weren't trolling. BTW, might want to reconsider this and the other stuff at the end of your post. I say this for your benefit, not mine.

Does anyone know any cons coming up that Funi might finally announce a release date?

So we have a general release window for 3.33 now. Not sure if someone had posted this already, apologies if someone has.

Man, I'd love to have full disclosure what exactly was going on there. Maybe Anno was like, "nope, this dub is not approved" and then his depression hit and he got super busy with Godzilla. Or they have like a 6 month recording session with Anno in the booth trying to wring out performances out of the dub cast akin to the original Japanese.

2016..... holy hell. I suppose Anno's issues may have well been a factor.

I think Anno was depressed by Funi’s initial English dub of Eva Q.

Meh. And here was me thinking they pushed it back for Eva's anniversary this year. At least that would have made sense.

^ I’m sure that was a thought Funi had and was trying to pursue at some point after Khara’s declaration of “Whoops! Bad dub.” But it seems as though “whatever” has gotten in the way of “something,” and were stuck with nothing until further notice.

Reading this makes me believe that, if they keep to this timeframe, they'll make the release date announcement this summer, probably at AX or Otakon.

What the hell have they been doing all this time?! Just what kind of back-and-forth is keeping this release so stretched out? (Discussion on the enclosed flash cartoon is here, by the way.)
