Called it back when 3.0 + 1.0 title announced that FINAL will not be out in 2015.

Release date for FINAL probably is Fall 2016-2017 right now.

The best way to watch the Raymond Burr version is to watch it right after the Japanese version, while being accompanied by the Duck and Cover PSA. The PSA highlights how the American's view of nuclear warfare was quite different from the Japanese, and highlights how both films portrayed their respective viewpoints.

He better finish Final first, we already have 30 godzilla films and just last year had a really well done one by america finally, so i got my fix of Godzilla for a while, but i do need more chronically depressed boys piloting giant robots.

Anno gave himself a break from Eva for over a year and a half. He should just finish it so he doesn't have to worry about it anymore and allow all of us to move on with our lives.
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996

I just want to see the last film before I die*; so the longer Anno delays, the more reason I have to delay the inevitable!

* There are other reasons not to die, of course!

mabye its cus i saw the bur version as a kid, and really like the way the American cut of 85 brings him back.
i think the American edit was still solidly put together & i do not think too much of the message was lost.
sherzawa's sacrifice was still powerful as hell even in the American edit.

at worse i think it took it down from being artful to being a solid 50s monster movie (and not a giant gila monster class one, im talking almost a creature from the black lagoon class one)

^ Honestly, if it wasn’t for the American edit of Godzilla, there wouldn’t be an international sensation around him to justify making even more of those things. The reason why we have the classic monster-fight Godzilla movies is because there was an American version that was released to Western audiences.

There is some difference in the messages in the two versions, though. The Raymond Burr version is more hopeful at the end of it. (We Americans tend to be a bit more optimistic about things than we probably should be half of the time.) Whereas the Japanese versions ends on the most somber of notes ever in a monster movie. Rather than a voice-over (like Raymond Burr’s) that looks towards the future with hope, we have a boat-load of people looking down into the black, watery grave of two victims of the results of the Atom Bomb (Godzilla and Dr. Serizawa).

But I give the Raymond Burr version a lot of credit, all things considering. I also grew up watching that one as a kid, and even then it impacted me on a level no other monster movie has. Yes, the original Japanese version is better. But without the American edit allowing for a Western release, it would have most likely been a lost and forgotten film, never spawning sequels or turning into the longest running film franchise in the world. It certainly would have never gotten a Criterion release.

Peaceful times is bringing all of the folks back!

View Original PostSeele00TextOnly wrote:Is this likely to be a continuity from the previous few films or a reboot or what? Any general idea or thoughts on that area of the project? Because it's one thing if Anno has free reign to tell Godzilla his way or if he's going to be sort of jumping into a series of films mid-continuity and working with what was left for him before.

Anno might do a “reboot” of Godzilla, but traditionally that reboot would still recognize the original Godzilla movie as taking place, with the “reboot” film being the new direct sequel to that original film. (The “reboot” series in the 80’s and 90’s still recognized the events in the original 1954 movie has the history of their movies, and every Japanese Godzilla movie made after 1999, whereas they weren’t sequels to one another, were still sequels to the original Godzilla movie.)

In this sense, Anno’s Godziila might be a sequel to the original 1954 film, but the one made right after it might either ignore Anno’s Godzilla movie all together in the interest of the new filmmakers making their own sequel, still recognize both the original and Anno’s movies as happening and making a sequel of Anno’s movie, or Anno himself might direct the sequel. If Anno did go ahead and reboot Godzilla entirely, replacing the original film and everything, it would be the first time it has ever been done in the history of Japanese Godzilla movies.

Anno also has a lot to choose from as well. Because all of the Japanese Godzilla movies made after 1999 basically decided to cherry-pick the “best parts of” Godzilla, this allowed the filmmakers to be creative about what Godzilla is or what he should represent. For example, in the 2001 movie Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, Godzilla was embedded with the souls of the fallen Japanese WWII soldiers, and the souls wished to destroy Japan after the nation forgot their sacrifices. Mother and King Ghidorah actually had to save Japan from Godzilla in that movie.

Somehow this seem the most Anno-like of all of the Godzilla stories that could be told by Hideaki Anno. We’ll see what he does with this rich and diverse anthology of mythology.

Also will be interesting to see if he can/will bring Shiro Sagisu along for the ride.

THIS. SO. MUCH.

To be fair, the continuity between most Godzilla films has always been kind've wonky. Choosing to focus more on creature effects and battles between the monster and Godzilla rather than telling an actual story. Rarely do you see the same cast return between films.

^ Yeah, even the ones that were sequels to the other movies had continuity issues with it. Mechagodzilla blew up on one end of Japan in Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla, and in the sequel film The Terror of Mechagodzilla they find the blown-up Mechagodzilla parts on the complete opposite end of the country.

And I care about that discrepancy about as much as the filmmakers did. We all know the important part was that knock-down, drag-out fight at the end of the movie anyway. And that part was arguably the best fight of the entire Showa Series.

I hope Anno brings in an original monster for this, too many of the recent godzilla films have just been constantly rehashing Mothra, King Ghidora and Mechagodzilla.

That's the ''selling'' point of the franchise. Battles with Godzilla etc. In these kinds of films, rarely the audience cares about the story.

Anno's letter certainly makes it sound like he won't be simply repeat what has been done in the past with the later Godzilla films. It certainly won't be no fucking Final War (fuck that movie). I got high hopes for Anno Godzilla. Plus, the best thing about Anno doing a Toho Godzilla movie is it's now official no matter what we'll be getting a new Hideaki Anno movie in 2016. Toho won't let him drag it out long.

Also, I'm guessing dependent on how far along they are in planning Evangelion 3.0+1.0 the new release year we should probably be thinking of is 2017. The 20th Anniversary of The End of Evangelion.

Boy, I really hope you are wrong about it being released in 2017 just so it can fall on an anniversary.

There really is no need for a film to spend this long in development, especially after finally being free from a depression once again. Plus, I'm pretty sure that Anno said he's working on 3.0 + 1.0 at the same time as Godzilla.
