Because it's one thing if Anno has free reign to tell Godzilla his way or if he's going to be sort of jumping into a series of films mid-continuity and working with what was left for him before.
Anno might do a “reboot” of Godzilla, but traditionally that reboot would still recognize the original Godzilla movie as taking place, with the “reboot” film being the new direct sequel to that original film. (The “reboot” series in the 80’s and 90’s still recognized the events in the original 1954 movie has the history of their movies, and every Japanese Godzilla movie made after 1999, whereas they weren’t sequels to one another, were still sequels to the original Godzilla movie.)
In this sense, Anno’s Godziila might be a sequel to the original 1954 film, but the one made right after it might either ignore Anno’s Godzilla movie all together in the interest of the new filmmakers making their own sequel, still recognize both the original and Anno’s movies as happening and making a sequel of Anno’s movie, or Anno himself might direct the sequel. If Anno did go ahead and reboot Godzilla entirely, replacing the original film and everything, it would be the first time it has ever been done in the history of Japanese Godzilla movies.
Anno also has a lot to choose from as well. Because all of the Japanese Godzilla movies made after 1999 basically decided to cherry-pick the “best parts of” Godzilla, this allowed the filmmakers to be creative about what Godzilla is or what he should represent. For example, in the 2001 movie
Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, Godzilla was embedded with the souls of the fallen Japanese WWII soldiers, and the souls wished to destroy Japan after the nation forgot their sacrifices. Mother and King Ghidorah actually had to save Japan from Godzilla in that movie.
Somehow this seem the most Anno-like of all of the Godzilla stories that could be told by Hideaki Anno. We’ll see what he does with this rich and diverse anthology of mythology.
Also will be interesting to see if he can/will bring Shiro Sagisu along for the ride.
THIS. SO. MUCH.
