Whew. Okay. Just a few of my unpopular opinions about anime:

99.5% of it is sexist trash made for pedophiles.

Everyone who "reviews" anime with videos on YouTube & primarily (or worse ONLY) talks about anime is a fucking tool & has no right to talk about art.

Hiroyuki Imaishii is the only director working in televised anime who is worth talking about. Primarily because his work has a great graffiti art sensibility - his best work in the past decade is Panty & Stocking - & everything he does has a real tongue in cheek sarcastic edge.

With Anno, Imaishii & Tsurumaki gone Gainax is dead to me.

Dragonball sucks. It's always sucked. I realized it sucked when I was 13 & while watching Goku vs. Freeza in DragonballZ I learned there was about 200 episodes left & that "there was always a stronger bad guy".

Cowboy Bebop was not the coolest thing ever made. Still pretty good though.

Hayao Miyazaki really is "all that".

Akira is a very well-animated movie. It's also fucking awful. And no, I will NOT read the manga to "understand" the whole story.

All the easy to make jokes about why anime sucks - excess exposition, bad & awkward animation, terrible stories, sexist junk for overgrown man children - are spot on.

It's got a ton of flaws but Tenchi In Tokyo is a hell of a lot better, sharper & focused than everything else
Tenchi. This also means Sakuya Kumashiro is a far better match for the kid than anyone else in the franchise.

You can tell how awful a show will be based on the size of the character's eyes.

No one should have an anime character as their avatar on Twitter. No matter what you say it makes you look juvenile, ignorant & not worth taking seriously. (Here's okay since it's a site about a specific show)

A lot of the "comedy anime's" aren't funny. No, it's not because of culture differences. They are just not funny. At all.

I probably got some more but can't think of any right now.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is the worst anime ever made. Like, really. Who thought it would be a good idea to put a whiny-ass little bitch in control of a giant robot?

Now, Kodomo no Jikan? That's art. True art. It is only bested by one show - Boku no Pico.

Sailor Moon and Madoka Magica are the best magical girl anime series.

They shouldn't have replaced the seiyuu for Tuxedo Mask and the inner senshi in Sailor Moon Crystal.

Also changing the opening theme was a bad move too, I like Moon Pride, but Moonlight Densetsu is way better.

The dub of Sailor Moon actually had some decent voice actors and it's not as bad as people say it is.

I enjoyed the Eva dub.

Nuh-uh pal, I crunched the numbers while debating with symbv, and since 2003, only 1/3 of anime have been moe-blobs. BP

Mecha is automatically made of win, unless it's Aquarion. Or a certain half of Gundam. Or was made when anime animation quality was more akin to cardboard cut outs.

Oh, what the heck? Here are a few from me:

  • Eva makes sense.

  • The main arc of Cowboy Bebop was terrible; everything that made the show worth watching came from the standalone episodes.

  • GitS movie is very pretty, but ultimately goes nowhere.

  • Akira bored me to tears.

  • Macross Plus is overrated (nice tunes though).

  • Mirai Nikki is better than a lot of people think it is.

  • Elfen Lied would be brilliant if it were the story we got in the manga.

  • Trigun's bait and switch utterly ruined it.

  • FMA was better than Brotherhood.

Well, that's a start, anyway. Let's see how much trouble this gets me!

I hate myself. But maybe I can learn to love myself. Maybe it's okay for me to be here! That's right! I'm me, nothing more, nothing less! I'm me. I want to be me! I want to be here! And it's okay for me to be here! -- Shinji Ikari, Neon Genesis Evangelion
Yes, I know. You thought it would be something about Asuka. You're such idiots.

I'm glad you agree, Baggi...

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I enjoyed Elfen Lied. The manga was better, no doubt, but the show is good if you want blood, tears, and tits. And you get all three.
View Original PostBagheera wrote:FMA was better than Brotherhood.
I don't what it is, but I can't bring myself to watch FMA at all. It's like Madoka Magicka for me. It's just so...boring.Don't kill me, Para.I still love you.

Yep.

Yeah, Cowboy Bebop's main arc couldn't carry a series by itself. Or at least, I wouldn't like it as much if it weren't for the structure that allowed most of the episodes to be standalone stories

Aside from that, I only disagree with you on GitS. Haven't seen Macross, Mirai Nikki, Elfen Lied or Trigun (though I plan to). It's been so long since I read the FMA manga and watched both series that I don't remember enough to have an opinion on them. I might revisit the anime at some point, but that's unlikely. Too many episodes and I doubt I'll like them as much as I did back then.

I don't really like it that this topic is used as an excuse to write in an excessively provocative way.

I had to go through MyAnimeList ratings to see if I actually have any particularly outrageous opinions, but I didn't really find any. I remember thinking that Now and Then, Here and There was way too heavy-handed and manipulative, which doesn't apparently reflect the consensus on the series. Another not-so-outrageous-but-perhaps-uncommon opinion is that Only Yesterday is my favorite Ghibli film.

Doesn't strike me that way, honestly. The word "controversial" in the title is also an indication of what to expect...

View Original PostFireball wrote:I watched them both as an adult. MSG is a timeless classic. SEED is an abomination.

Things I hated about MSG (the movies. I haven't seen the series and don't plan to, seeing how tedious watching the movies was):
- Certainly not the best animation for its times. Even in the movies, which were partially reanimated, the QUALITY is often present.
- Excessively slowly moving story, especially during what I'd call "Tominoisms". If it was this grating in the movies, I just don't want to know how bad it was in the original series, with its 150 episodes. :vomit_duo:
- The spiritual segments with Lala. Gods, make them stop (to be honest, I also hated the bits with Flay in Seed :XP: ).
- Boneheaded decisions by about everyone, that only make sense if the plot was written without bothering with common sense.

Now Seed suffers from a lot of recycled animation, but at least it generally looks good. The music's quite good too. Seed Destiny is rather worse, especially the first half, but once Kira/Lacus comes back it gets a lot better (except for Athrun's character rape).

Also many post-1993 shonen (jump) manga copied aspects from Dragon Ball. Most of it being inspirational. They all owe their fame to DB.
It's kind of like how when Star Wars became a hit in '77 and everybody wanted in
in on it. Before we knew it, many, many more sci-fi movies were being made in the later 70's/all of 80's

Now by NO means was Dragon Ball the first fighting manga or SW the first Sci-fi movie
but you cannot deny their crazy successes and helping to get the ball rolling in their genres.

For crying out loud Naruto's uniform colors are based off Goku's gi, Luffy's love for food again based off Goku's love for food.

(And I'm another one who enjoyed Mirai Nikki.)

I even think Angel Beats! isn't as bad as it's made out to be, though its pacing is badly flawed.
