If anyone wants to watch a good assassin movie, the version of Kite that cuts out all of the excess hentai bits is good. Those are just distracting and are more graphic than they really need to be, even if they're framed in a context that tries to make them relevant to the plot as well. The animation is great, the motion is very fluid, especially for the action scenes and the "action" scenes. Kite probably would have benefitted from not turning into a straight-up porno for some parts.
I enjoy the trashiness of the anime from that era. It's all pretty funny. A lot of the anime from that period are, on top of being misogynistic, exploitative filth, terribly constructed in terms of story, leading to anime that are full of plot holes and nonsense. It's the exact opposite of the overly-expositional anime of today. I find them very amusing. I haven't seen all that many of them, but the ones I would recommend are:
Akira is probably the most well-known and highly regarded. It just happens to have more to say than other violent, cynical anime of its era.
Ninja Scroll. It's a great samurai/martial arts flick with all the violence, sex and amorality that characterize the other anime of its ilk. The animation is, as everyone says, awesome.
California Crisis is a nice exercise in the art of the anti-climax.
Call Me Tonight is about a dude who becomes a monster because of his uncontrollable adolescent libido.
Wicked City and Apocalypse Zero are also pretty bad, in different ways. Fun stuff.
I think X/1999 falls into this category as well, because it crams a long-form series by Clamp into a movie with an hour-and-a-half running time. You might say that it's kind of what Adolescence Apocalypse was to Revolutionary Girl Utena. Anyway, the cast is pretty large and in the series they're explored to some depth, but here they're just there to fight and you only get inklings of who they are and what they're all about. It's a very well-animated, enjoyable mess. I also love the decapitated head cradling.
A recent anime called Rin: The Daughters of Mnemosyne is basically an OVA series from the 80's that was made in 2008. You could say it's a love letter to such anime.
Others that I consider to be less entertaining are Vampire Sensou, Darkside Blues and Twilight of the Dark Master.
Inferno Cop is a brilliant parody of/tribute to the anime of this era, though it's also more than that.
If you want an anime that's just genuinely bad in pretty much every regard, watch Mars of Destruction. It succeeds at failing so hard, it's actually kind of funny.

I'm kind of worried that Cross Ange is not the trainwreck I expected it to be. It's actually decent as far as exploitation goes. Really digging the whole spoiled princess turning into a battle hardened amazon.
But it doesn't? I mean, they spend now 3 episodes to explain everything. Pretty much anything that has happened is 1:1 from the VN. I don't understand were this notion comes from that you have to be familiar with the franchise to enjoy UBW. I'm just as new to it as you guys, well apart from to occasional spoilers you just pick up when you hang around /a/ too long. In fact, reading the VN a bit makes me glad never getting into it because how much Nasu's prose is tiring me already.
cyharding wrote:You stated the problem better than I did. Having a callback is nice for the hardcore fans, but if you put in something that you have to watch another series to fully understand, you fail to grab any potential new fans and you in fact alienate them. Personally, I will give the show one more episode before I make a decision.

Yeah I really don't see the newb problem either. Of course fans deep into mythos can better appreciate all sort of little details and all (having read through UBW it's wonderful to see how some things have been foreshadowed from the very beginning - foreshadowing that I missed when I first read the VN) and are prone to geek and fanwank over variety of things but I don't see what about UBW has been forbidding to new comers. It follows the VN, lays down the rules of the world, sets up the characters and story etc. in a way that presumes no familiarity beforehand whatsoever, at least so far.

And maybe that is the problem. I'm seeing these conversations from the serious fans and it is giving me the idea that the show is a fragment of a connected greater work that you must have knowledge about the other pieces than as a complete story in and of itself. I mean there are three pieces that these fans already know: The original VN with all of its routes, the 2006 anime series (which apparently, the fans seem to hate), and the prequel series Fate/Zero. The studio can easily cut corners story wise as the fans would have knowledge from these sources to fill in any gaps themselves. Maybe it just means that it's best that I just avoid the comments section on Crunchyroll.

So just for confirmation from the FSN "veterans": I know that the original FSN and UBW represent the "Saber" arc and "Rin" arc of the VN, respectively. Does this mean that I could technically watch them in either order with no loss in "enjoyment"?

If you watch DEEN's "Fate" arc you'll definetly face loss of enjoyment because it's rather awful. Not Tsukihime anime tier awful, but pretty awful nevertheless.
Perhaps best option would be to play/read Fate and then watch UBW if you really want to experience Fate arc beforehand.
That's always wise option

Star Driver 01: Talk about a first episode, what the fuck. That Ginga Bishonen transformation is the most stylish I've ever seen. The OP was really good too. I don't know what kind of pace the other 24 episodes will keep but I think I'm going to like this a lot.

Take half the unit, didn't know who they were anyway. BP
I personally wanted the little-miss-train wreck act to go on a little longer, just to see what else they'd let her destroy before deciding she was better off dead than flying their expensive war robots.
But nope, she's cut her hair and got her OP mecha, so that's done.
I also figured out something I should have realized straight off the bat: the DRAGONs must be mana users too, that's why so few mana users are among the military. Besides being cheaply available cannon fodder, the muggles are natural cancelers of the dragon's powers... Y'know, when it isn't a beam cutting you in half, or their teeth tearing you apart ( honestly, I was not expecting that second girl to die).
So, these scantly clad ladies are an army of Jurgens and Tomas...
... Which would make more sense if they were ground troops, or even jet pack troopers. Given that they're in the air, and fighting inside giant robots, will the cancelation effect ever actually come to play I wonder? Is it a chekov's gun?

Cross Ange looks like it's going somewhere, but I got suckered into that with Seed as well (which wasn't all that bad, really, at least compared to what came after). The dragon angle is holding my attention, at least. And I love the fact that the whiz-bang mecha has a freakin' hood ornament! That is just glorious.
Bunch of other stuff I'm not keeping up with that I should; Chaika, maybe Parasyte, When Supernatural Battles Become Commonplace, etc. Gotta play catch up.

Yes, I know. You thought it would be something about Asuka. You're such idiots.

Just finished Mirai Nikki, it was average, id give it about 6.9/10. The dub wasn't really that good, except for yuno, brina palencia is gold as always. Yuno was also the only character i really cared about in the show as well. Don't even get me started on all the evangelion cliches i noticed in this show. Anyway i just ordered Cowboy Bebop and Code Geass its bout time i see why these shows are called masterpieces.

That aside, I'm surprised that you didn't like it. Could you go into any more detail?

Well, I hate to break it to you, but Mirai Nikki is an utter train wreck. It starts off promising, dwindles into awful territory, until it reaches a point where it's so bad you have no choice but to laugh your ass off.
If you're in for crazy shit entertainment, you're gonna have a great time. But if you had any expectations, you ought to be disappointed.

Well, it's sure not perfect; but I'm inclined to be a lot kinder than you about it! To be straightforward, crazy though it gets, I enjoy it.
