MOTY 2015
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996

A movie based on a movie of 1984. How does that work, exactly?

I just noped so hard that I spent ten minutes trying to properly word my dissatisfaction, but ultimately ended up with this simple post, and a feeling of dreary resignation.

If it makes you guys feel any better, this sounds like the ideal movie to wind up in development hell.

I wish I could summon such optimism.

Actually, here's an optimistic thought: Perhaps in 2024 during the next ten-year anniversary of the book's title, another director will consider redoing this movie, but with less facepalm.

Then again, some other terrible actress will be of age by then. Whoops, optimism gone.

You guys are overreacting. It could be good, maybe.

Adapting 1984 into a movie is kind of a dumb idea to begin with, because the novel is basically about language and rhetoric. Turning it into a love story sounds like such a spectacularly bad idea, though, that I'm holding out hope it could turn out to be some sort of camp classic.

Eh, we'll see where this goes. I got tired of hating on Kristen Stewart right around the time it became popular to hate on Justin Bieber. Maybe she's grown less infuriating as an actress in the interim.

Optimism returns!

Sounds like it could be a reason to see another film starring Kristen Stewart-
BUT
I would rather re-read and read about 1984
... and while I'm at it I'd rather re-watch the 1984 film version

The real tragedy of this movie's existence is that it means that there will never be a 1984 starring James Franco.
