Like, ever.
I dug out a YouTube excerpt of the toothbrush scene a while back when germane to another thread (in the context of explaining the "brush your imouto's teeth" meme), and let it play out of curiosity.

I found it ugly, overwrought and tedious, and went back to completing the post after about 30 seconds. This is probably me vs Shinbo/SHAFT, since "ugly, overwrought and tedious" is pretty much how I'd describe Madoka as well, after grinding to a halt 2/3 the way through that -- just that the toothbrush scene was all the style that I didn't get on with in a much more concentrated dose.

Watch Bakemonogatari at least.

And yeah, Monogatari-series' fanservice can go sometimes over the top for some people. Though, i liked Nise. :D

Though I'm intrigued about what I'll find when I get to the toothbrush in a couple of weeks...

I don't think you understand. It's not the fanservice itself, it's the amount and how the tone shifted from a clever take on harem that was more about helping the girls with their problems and the occasional tongue in cheek panty shot here and there to straight up pointless ecchi in which every girl turned into a mindless cock hungry slut. And no, just because Nisio threw in some last ditch philosophy at the end doesn't give it anymore credibility. Maybe that's just me though, before Nise I held the Monogatari franchise in a slightly higher regard than your average harem series. I would recommend Bake to another person that's interested in some quirky romance, but there is no way I could show Nise to anyone ever. The incest pandering, the loli bath scene, the middle school snake girl that desperatly wants the D, the gay tomboy that goes straight for our MC etc. It's exactly the kind of degernated crap I hate about the genre so much. Neither do I think the complains have much to do with prudeness. I'm the last person that's against tits and ass but it's not like it's good masturbation material either since there is no penetration which makes it actual terrible porn. Really, the best thing that came out of Nise was the Oral Hygiene Bro story someone on /a/ made up, which was hotter than anything the show ever delivered. Even the maker feels embarrassed that they animated his fapfic and would have preferred to keep his fantasies to himself, that's how shallow the whole thing was.

But yeah, watch it, don't expect anything like Bake and enjoy the PLOT, though I think you won't like it considering your opinion on the GuP OVA.

Stella Jogakuin Koutou-ka C³-bu episode 13

Well yeah, that was the expected fanservice episode that doesn't really fit as an end and somehow that's just exemplary for the whole series. You never got the feeling the show knew what it wanted to be. GuP clone? Upotte with jazz? Evangelion meets airsoft? In the end it was a weird mix of ideas that couldn't satisfy and it doesn't come to a surprise that the director has never done anything before. To get an idea of what I'm talking about, here is just a little example of how the the expectations and opinions changed multiple times during the broadcast

It is funny that the show's major problems were caused by Gainax themselves not being able to maintain COMMAND, CONTROL and COMMUNICATION but then again maybe some habits really die hard. I'll give it credit for Yura though, whose fall and rise was a joy to follow and discuss over the months.
SPOILER: Show

She is definitely one of the better developed female leads and the series was worth watching just for her. Also Rento's voice whose actor was a complete novice stormed everyone's heart like an assault rifle.

Yura didn't really strike a chord with me, honestly. I kept wanting to get into her arc but always came back to one simple fact: "It's just airsoft, man!" Would've liked it better if it was just a sports anime instead of something that tried too damn hard.

Also, really loved Sonora's voice. Loved the character in general (though the "master in America" bit was just stupid), but the VA was perfect IMO.

Understandable reaction as I often thought so myself, though it's a bit surprising coming from you considering there is a lot of Asuka in Yura too. What simply is airsoft to one is for another the world and anyone who has ever competed in a sport to compensate for the lack of attention will understand what a lonely path this can lead to.

The difference is that Asuka has some Really Fucking Serious problems stemming from tangible real world issues. Mother's suicide, sidelined and thrown away because someone else is the only one who counts, mindrape, etc. Yura, by contrast . . . shit, I don't even know what her deal was. Some girls ignored her in middle school or something? Yeah, not seeing it. If we'd gotten some meaty background on her it might be another matter.

Hahaha! Yeah, I can see that. She's got an impressive body of work, but most of it's slipped under my radar. But Kokoro, HSotD, and -Monogatari, along with Blast of Tempest and of course Q . . . gonna have to start paying more attention to this woman.

You know, there is this person in my old who is (last time i heard of her at least) a huge fan of Madoka. Sometimes i wonder what kind of discussions the two of you would have regarding the anime.

On topic, i watched the first three episodes of Mobile Suit Gundam (or 0079 Gundam, no idea how it's supposed to be called)

Well, not sure where to start. It was as intense as it was impressive, and it was very intense. It's very rare for me to have such a positive impression of a series right from the first episode but Gundam really is amazing.

The first thing that jumped to attention were the visuals. Now, i knew things like the character designs and cinematography were going to be dated, but it still surprised me a bit how... Different, it was from my usual experiences with anime. It wasn't bad though, on the contrary. The old-school anime art and style were both pretty interesting in seeing how things were done back then, and managed to have quite a vitality to them. Overall, if i had to describe it in one word, i would use "static". Animations are generally "stiff", the camera doesn't move much, etc. But it "makes up" for it with achieved composition and captivating action and pacing. And like i said, the old-school designs were pretty cool and an interesting change from what i was used to, all those pencil lines...

The writing... Three episodes in i don't have much to say. Not because i think the writing was underwhelming (on the contrary) but simply because i can't find the words. Tomino sure as hell is a great writer though. Amuro Ray is a rather interesting character, and i was quite surprised at how three-dimensional he -and most of the cast now that i think about it- was.

So yeah, much more things to say but can't seem to be able to verbalize them properly. It's probably not a story i would have watched without recomendation (too much death and with a "hard" feel to it, plus i'm just not into mechanical things) but i can certainly see why it's such a remembered series. It's quite awesome really. Silly music (Specially OP and ED) and sound-effects aside.

One thing i am curious about, but that will probably be answered later:

SPOILER: Show
Did Amuro *really* accidentally kill his father when he blew up that Zaku? It's just weird that even 3 episodes no one even once asked "What happened with Lt. Ray?"
"Every line is a joy" -Kaworu Nagisa.

"Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm." - Ralph Waldo Emerson.

I'm surprised you started the series, most watch the movies - not that it makes much of a difference in case you are wondering. Don't worry about the deaths. The show is a meat grinder but compared to Tomino's other works it still very hopeful and deals with the topic of war maturely.

Funny, I had the same reaction. I had braced myself for some really dated stuff; but after about 10 minutes I didn't really mind. It's certainly old-looking and has lots of QUALITY but it wasn't a chore to look at for me, and I really expected it to be.

I think you're being a little unfair, as if there was nothing to it but the fanservice. What relevance does Kaiki play in relation to fanservice? Or Tsukihi being an apparition? Or how a protagonist defined by his altruism had sisters who constantly spouted speeches about justice?

Maybe you think the focus shifted for the worse, but I don't think it lost what made monogatari monogatari. Still plenty of interesting things going on.

Oh, and I still don't know where that quote that Isin wrote it as masturbation material comes from. It's touted like it came form an official interview.

The anxieties stem from being an outcast in her previous school. The distraction comes from the false belief that if she is good in airsoft she will get attention, then the whole sniper incident/tournament shit and Sonora or Rin were anything but helpful to her.

Well that clears that up, thanks. Couldn't disagree more about Kaiki tho. I'll have to watch it again and pay closer attention to senjougahara, but I won't try to convince you otherwise. About her or nise in general.

Oh, you changed it to something about hair. I don't mind the short hair.

On a related note, I'm curious to see how this nadeko arc works out. Hers was my least favorite part of bake but this seems more interesting.

You're talking about effect, not cause. I'm wondering why she got so fixated on airsoft when she already had attention. Even after her flub in the beginning the group still liked and accepted her, and they were pretty forward with that fact. I understand that people are irrational and all but it was a tough sell even so.

Personally, I watched the series because it was there on Crunchy up til a year ago, and it did for being the filler series when we were managing to watch a couple of episodes a few evenings a week, and didn't always have an even number of other titles on the go.

I hate myself. But maybe I can learn to love myself. Maybe it's okay for me to be here! That's right! I'm me, nothing more, nothing less! I'm me. I want to be me! I want to be here! And it's okay for me to be here! -- Shinji Ikari, Neon Genesis Evangelion
Yes, I know. You thought it would be something about Asuka. You're such idiots.
