This. After all, 14-year-old boys have a pretty consistent track record of surviving in space for an extra 14 years without food, water, or even while possibly not having a human body and no told method of regaining said human body.
Wait....

I think that when the preview made, the plan was for a much shorter gap and a film where Shinji was mostly absent while the rest of the cast dealt with the consequences of his actions, but somewhere along the line it was decided that the audience was too supportive of Shinji and needed a harsh lesson in the form of an entire movie hamfistedly belaboring how much of a self absorbed asshole he is.

Jesus who could remove the collar in the first place. If they did, they wouldn't ever had bothered creating such a device against him in the first place.
It's safe to assume that they had very good reason to believe that the only people who could remove the collar would be Misato.

Whatever her goals may be, they are not the exact same as Gendo's. So while she may end up aiding Gendo's plans and going against WILLE, it's only because of her personal wishes, not because she's actually following Gendo for his sake.
ElMariachi wrote:If he really made the time skip because people misinterpreted Shinji's actions at the end of the movie, then he was really clumsy : it's pretty hard to feels Shinji as a self absorbed asshole when he didn't had any idea that 3I was being triggered by trying to save Rei, hell he didn't even know that an Evangelion could cause an Impact!
He has many flaws : tendency to close himself to others when things don't go the way he likes, extreme stubbornness(like when he resigned after Bardiel or when he pulled out the spears), is tendency to run away from the hardships instead of facing his problem, but a self absorbed asshole he isn't(he spent half of 2.0 taking care of Rei and cooking meals for Misato and Asuka!), for that kind of people you should look to Gendo who willingly forsake the world for his own plan.
Azathoth wrote:Oh my god, he cooks for others?! What a compassionate and unselfish human being! Really though, virtually the entire point of Q is that Shinji still hasn't gotten sick of attempting to return to the womb. The last scene of Ha is as damning a portrait of Shinji as Anno has ever presented; back when I was still trying to watch these movies under the impression that Shinji was supposed to be sympathetic, I absolutely couldn't think what Anno was trying to say with it. The only way the scene makes sense, especially in the context of Q, is if you assume that the entire point is that Shinji is being both stupid (wielding Eva selfishly without any idea of the consequences of his actions) and an asshole ("I don't care about the world!"). The context to which I refer is that Q deliberately strips away the excuse behind which he's always been able to hide - that he's just a baka trying his best - and flat-out says to him, "all this happened because you were an asshole, Shinji, and your attempts to fix it are doomed to failure because they're the exact same kind of asshole behavior". And lo and behold, they absolutely are. Shinji's a seriously fucked individual, and cooking food doesn't really outweigh the fact that he has now begun the apocalypse for selfish and borderline delusional reasons in three of the last four movies in which his character has appeared.

I thought that the narrative of 2.0 made it pretty clear that Shinji was exceptionally selfish when Ritsuko started to talk about how what Unit-01 is doing is all a result of the wish of a single person, though. The audience misunderstanding it is certainly a failure to properly convey it, but I see little reason to doubt that while Shinji may have been technically unaware, he genuinely cared for Ayanami over the rest of the world, just like dear old dad.

Well, after N4I both Shinji and Wille are now on the same line: Both have lost important people, had bad experiences ect.It was everyone else that got screwed.
Conspicuous wrote:...And learn nothing from the ordeal, while Asuka was forced to make Odin's Bargain during her Deep Eva Encounter and suffer through karmic repercussions on pretty most every aspect of her personality for the next fourteen years.
Really, Shinji got off lightly for destroying the world, and managed to only ruin more stuff shortly after he returned. Guess that's what WILLE got for not treating him like a little kid.
Honestly, this was probably the biggest factor in Asuka's treatment of Shinji during the fight. After all that, and he hasn't learned a single thing.
Charsi wrote:And yet the brief awakening of Eva-01 during Operation US was laid at Shinji's feet and used as partial justification for the collar around his neck.
How does that even work?
As for the later posts, I agree with Conspicuous. Shinji got off easy, because he wasn't even aware of time passing and hasn't aged a day. It was everyone else that got screwed.
ElMariachi wrote:No, if there was an Idiot Ball, it was at the end of the movie, and collectively held by Shinji for no listening to Kaworu's pleas to don't touch the spears, Kaworu for not better explaining before sortieing why they absolutely need a LoL and a LoC, and not two LoL, and Asuka for acting like a raging berserker and not trying a single second to explain to Shinji why he shouldn't touch these spears, even thought he was willing to talk.
