Im not quite in the same mindset as the first time I watched EoE, but I feel...hollow and unusual. I am however not surprised as I have learned that you never get what you expect when it comes to Eva..
EDIT
after a night of reading novice script translations, cleanly written and honest fan reviews, post/opinions/conjecture of /a/ and egf users I want to sprout demon horns from my forehead, coat everything in blood and throw my computer out the window while cursing humanity in some demonic unknown tongue. Thank you Hideaki, you rotten explitive. time for a pill.

The world's still the same - there's just less in it.

Not a real spoiler, but to be sure I'll put it in one.
SPOILER: Show
This Kotaku review made me angry because they criticized things they understood wrongly as "bad storytelling". Also, they don't seem to understand, that you can't write off a whole series before the final installment has been released.
Sure, Anno fucked us quite hard yet again, but that's what Eva is about, isn't it?

Wow, what a ride.
I'm still trying to formulate my thoughts on this one, but I'll say this for now: because it went off into completely new territory, it felt like watching the series for the first time again. I had no idea what to expect, and regardless of any other issues the movie may have had, the unpredictable nature made watching it an enjoyable experience. If you're committed to avoiding spoilers, good luck, but I think it will be worthwhile.

Japanator has a more traditional and well balanced review of the movie though it still contains some minor spoilers.
However, to summarize it: 8.0 – Great. A well executed film or series that defines its genre without resorting to cliches.

Evangelion is like the Japanese Star Wars.

Chiral_Spiral wrote:I realize this is asking a lot, but is there any way someone could briefly summarize the Japanitor and Kotaku reviews? They're the only in-depth reviews I've seen so far and both of them are apparently pretty spoiler laden. Me and the rest of the non-spoiler crowd would really appreciate it
At first I want to say, what the Japanator Review also said, it's practically impossible to talk about this movie without spoilering.
Kotaku review is worthless as they misunderstood not only the whole climax of 2.0 and 3.0, but were also completely unable to voice a valid opinion for 3.33. (I wouldn't even call it a review, it reads more like an Interview of EVA-victims).
The Japanator review fares much better in my opinion. It's a real review.

(this is my first post and I'll introduce myself in the proper thread shortly)
Just got back from the movie and I thought I would share my spoiler-free thoughts.
This is a Rebuild/Reboot for sure. While the first two installments had a lot of elements from the original series, 3.0 goes off into a different direction. Because of this, I am not surprised by the mixed reviews. There are always fans who hold an original in the highest regard and anything done to change that is met with resistance.
As for me, someone who also holds the original with high regard, I am not quite sure exactly how I feel about Q. Maybe I'll need a few days to really let it sink in. As for my initial impressions:
Visually it was fantastic. Everything from the action to the slower parts were very well done.
Sound was also great in all aspects.
The story was, well I am going to wait until 4.0. It really felt incomplete to me, and maybe that is how it was supposed to be. It's not like watching LOTR Two Towers where it gave a sense of completion as a movie but not as a series. 3.0 felt like the first half of the final chapter and we have to wait to see the last half.
Overall I enjoyed it. I'm very interested to see how this all will end(?).

Finally jumped on the wagon and registered to talk about Q! XD
This is pretty much how I felt when I went for the 1st time (on the 1st day of release in Ikebukuro):
WTH am I watching?? → Is this a dream or sth?? → Oh no maybe I'm sitting in the wrong cinema! → Ahhhh OK.... → *GASP!* → *sniff* → Depressed.... → I don't know what to think → *sat in seat for like 10min trying to process what had just happened* → stayed up all night....
It was fairly quiet when the movie ended. Most people just seemed too stunned to make a proper reaction (poor Shinji.... now I know exactly how he must have felt XD). A lot of them were talking about how difficult it was to follow the story because of how dramatically things have changed. Surprisingly (or not lol), a lot of the guys seemed to be pleased with the amount of screen time Kaworu had.
After reading the pamphlet and spoilers online, I went back to watch it for a 2nd time last night. It was so much better!! I think I actually understood more than half of the story, although a lot of things still went past me like nothing....
And I have to admit, I cried this time when Hikki's song started playing in the end.... Even more depressed than before T_T
As to Q being boring, I must say I found it just as exciting, if not more, than Ha. Ha to me is more like main-stream entertainment trying to please a larger audience, while Q takes us right back to what Evangelion and/or Anno should be like (at least IMO) which like in the past, certainly won't be everybody's cup of tea to say the least. But that's just me ;)
I'll also admit that at times I couldn't help but curse Anno for "abandoning" his audience once again and leaving us entirely on our own to figure sh*t out, but only to realize that was exactly what drew me to EVA in the first place....
OK Anno, you've won, again!
Planning to watch it again next month =D
==================================
Now that I've gone back and watched the trailer for Q at the end of Ha a few more times.... I think I'm finally seeing (roughly) WTH is going on! orz

I'm not expecting Q to be the new EoE in every way. One of the reasons why D&R and EoE are my favorite films is because of the sheer variety of visual film techniques found in those films. It doesn't matter what technique I'm into at the time, one of those films is bound to use it somewhere, and use it in a very well implemented way.
But experiencing Eva anew is something I've always wanted to do since I saw the TV series for the first time. (Probably because I hate myself.) These films are a great opportunity for me to do that.
