Adolescence of Utena?

edit: Well, I haven't posted in ages because of a huge addiction to Aion and Dragon Age 2, but this week I finished Tiger & Bunny, Usagi Drop (both great) and finally saw the Nanoha movie, in my opinion much better than the 1st season itself.

edit2: Oh, and I'm also rewatching EVA for the first time in years (not couting the Rebuild movies).
Asuka's not a bitch, she just denies her innocence in a bitchy way.

True. I guess I should have gone with SKUAA or something instead.

I think I do...

View Original Postsymbv wrote:I think Kamisama no Memocho is a light novel, not a manga. There is indeed a manga, but it is an adaptation of the light novel just like the anime and only one volume has so far come out. Anyway, the anime is definitely not doing well as many fans in Japan find it just lacking in memorable story or characters or art/animation.

Quite a shame, as the story I feel has the potential for it, but the writers instead decided to just give us things right off the bat without it seeming as if the characters were really struggling to get there. Also, as stated before, they didn't do quite near enough to endear a great deal of the cast to the viewer.

It seems, just like Tiger & Bunny, that the concept was great, but the people behind it just weren't up to the task of making something great out of it. The end result is that both sorted of coasted, and T & B, being far more visual dependent, fared better for it.

What I like most about Tiger & Bunny though is that it's a story that works without any overt relationships going on, just a one-sided crush. The fatherhood angle was rather last minute, and kind of shallow, still, a step in the right direction I feel, but better done by Usagi (minus the manga ending).

Watched Kamisama Dolls. First half of this episode was fantastic, the second. . . not so much. The series of events that lead up to the end were completely unbelievable. Though it does set things up for an awesome final.

Also, glasses girl just vaulted herself into the ranks of my favorite characters ever.
SPOILER: Show
She fights that dude and kills him with his own gun, and just when I think she's going to wimp out, she just grins and chucks the gun into the hands of the other fool, framing his sorry ass. Awesome hardly describes her.

I lasted up to ep 9 in Dancouga before the place I found it decided not to have episode 10 with the "oh our Mega Video links aren't working TEMPORARILY" and you know when the problem is "temporary" with Mega Video it is never getting fixed. Every other video link is either broken or it is on ZShare, which wouldn't be too bad if it did not go out of sync EVERY TIME IT GOES BEYOND 10 MINUTES. And then you find out that even ZShare vids only have the introductions and NOT THE FULL EPISODE! COME ON!

Why the hell is it that anime I'm interested in is hard to find stream wise? I'd ask GasmaskAvenger to help if I actually know a place (let alone a safe one) to download these eps and see on his stream channel (BTW, has anyone seen him in the past month?). First it's the fact that the last eps of Xabungle are only found at 56.com, now this!

I somehow started watching Clannad and Durarara!!.

Clannad´s fucking stupid if it thinks that it can get me to cry like Furukawa who starts tearing up like 5 or 6 times in one goddamned arc.
Other than that, it´s surprisingly well made and enjoyable.

I watched the first episode of after war gundam x. Gundam X is one of the few gundams I have not watched (the only other one being turn A gundam). I enjoyed the first episode and from what I heard about the series the main character does not bitch once about not wanting to pilot the gundam (not that I mind that but in like almost every gundam the main character bitched about not wanting to pilot it and after a while that can get annoying (I can’t remember if Herro or Domon bitched about that)). I’m not going to watch any more anime this month. My internet plan really sucks (argh only 2 gigs a month for 30 dollars!) and if I go over the limit again my mom’s going to kill me.

 The eyes! The eyes! Those odd eyes!

Seriously I couldn't take it because of the damned eyes, which leaves me happier with Marimite's normal-looking character designs and straightforward plot.

Man I love that film, though to fully appreciate what Oshii does with Patlabor films one should see them in order OVA > 1 > 2

I don't think magical girl shows suit TDSA but that doesn't mean they're bad. I don't care for heavy metal but it's not like I automatically assume that just because of that the genre has no merits.

View Original PostTwin Drive Sigma Aquarion wrote:and it was sure as hell better than anything from the Macross franchise

I really don't mind your opinions one way or another TDSA, but I would appreciate if you'd tone down your whole "fishing for reactions" things you've been overdoing lately. The hooks are too darn obvious (like here) and are starting to get kinda eyesorish - oh and don't even try going dumb for a change and claim I'm making this up, you've been doing this for quite a while now, at least since you started reviewing films en masse and figured throwing in "better than Citizen Kane" makes you clever.

View Original Postsymbv wrote:Opinions are also divided in Japan and reading reviews by manga fans one interesting thing is it seems females actually are more receptive to the development of the manga. I don't know why though...

I'd really like to write here "because women are kinda batshit" but that wouldn't be nice

But the truth is both josei and shoujo manga have this habit of introducing incredibly disturbing plot elements out of freaking nowhere and there's general, uhhhhhhhhh, "wait what"ness to the cliches moreso than in more straightforward shonen manga. See for example: everything CLAMP, the rapey rape rape rabu in too many shoujo romance manga to count... very forced incest vibe in MacrossF Kiss in the Galaxy shoujo manga adaptation (BLERGH) aaaaand this list would never end if I continued.

Oh, and the "love rival who loses falls in love with main pair's baby girl" didn't first appear in Twilight, it happened in KARE KANO :cringe:

re:Usagi Drop it doesn't hurt that young Japanese women these days hunt middleaged men, or so it seems based on all surveys made lately.

You know, I once joked to someone that Kare Kano was "Twlight done right."

I guess it's no longer a joke.

Except that the manga turns into a total batshit insane shoujo romance trainwreck soon after the point anime ends at...so it's not even "done right"

^Touche. Even before that, episode 20-24 and especially 26 (Anno wrote it too!) was getting pretty angsty; not the charming angst from the first 18 episodes (a league of its' own), I'm talking about basic teenage angst.

It's such a pity Anno didn't get to do his original anime ending. Kare Kano was such a superb shoujo romance for so long and then...guuhhh, the most annoying genre convictions came and slowly won over

Completely sane shoujo romance that doesn't make you wonder if you're reading one of those porny romance novels aimed at women is a rare thing. Kare Kano managed to avoid that for quite a while but... :(

^I'm just as baffled as you are Xard. The only explanation I came come up with (for the anime at least) is that according to Ganiax's website some years ago, someone else (I believe it was Sato Hiroki on most of them) wrote the screenplay for those episode, but even then, the site credits Anno for writing the screenplay for both episode 19 and 26, so the problems were apparent while Anno was still around. You know things are slipping when the episode that's pure filler (episode 25) and the brief comedic moments in some of the episodes ends up being the highlight, which was never the case at all in the first 18.

The site also mentioned in one of the journal's entries that the staff had a big meeting over the last episode (EDIT: it was on the airing of episode 21; it mentioned SERIES finale too), if that's any consideration...

My mind is nowhere near as "narrow minded" as you might think.
but I would appreciate if you'd tone down your whole "fishing for reactions" things you've been overdoing lately.

I have? Sorry.

Anyway, TDSA has now taken on Nanoha by constant request by Mr. Tines. Oh lord, maybe it's just the first episode, but how the hell is this REMOTELY like a Gundam series? HOW!? First off the music is horrid (surprised? yeah, I'm not either). Second, this is a kids show, right? Why the hell is it so fan servicy? It doesn't seem as bad as Mai-Hime or Madoka Magica so far, but that's really not saying much.
