It made a funny joke, yeah, but the household chores/mommy connection and the massive foreshadowing it carries is already more than enough interpretation for that scene. Not everything that is longer than it's wide is automatically a dick. They make that stuff more noticeable, see the resident phallus thread.

Expecially. No one would say that Shinji was thinking of his mom whenever Asuka showes her boobs into her face. They're trying not to see something they think shouldn't be there - they can still think that Rei is the "wrong" chick for Shinji, I'm not going to tell them who their fav char ahould be, but there IS some attraction, expecially from Rei's side.

To use the most blatant examples, half the cast of Rebuild assumes them to be in love (Misato, Asuka, Kensuke...), and they still say that not even the POSSIBILITY of S/R exists and that we're still imagining everything.
