So apparently my parents went and saw The King's Speech today. How frightening - now I wonder just how well it fits that scale... They're about as white collared and middle-classed as it gets

Battle: Los Angeles (2011) - I saw the movie Friday night. Overall, I enjoy it a lot better then I thought I would. I like that it's more of a war type of movie then another alien type of flick similar to Independence Day or the 2005 version of War of the Worlds. I like the characters, and the action was intense, and great throughout. I wish there was more to the story though since
SPOILER: Show
We know nothing about the Alien race or where they came from. It looks like the ending left things off for a sequel since one of the aliens where left off then ran off.
.

The movie is not perfect but it blows Skyline out of the water for sure. 4/5

The King's Speech was probably not even heard of by said demo until Oscar Night, and then the film is nominated and actually wins some big awards and said demo's curiosity is piqued, it happens

something simliar happened with Cold Mountain and other historical films

Billy and Mandy's Big Boogey Adventure. It's basically a long episode of Billy and Mandy, not that it's a bad thing, it was entertaining. Irwin getting beat up by bears was priceless though.

There Will Be Blood.

One of the best movies of the past decade, maybe even the best.

One of my favorite movies ever. That score is TERRIFYING at times (gotta love Greenwood). I'm glad I went to see it twice when it was released in theaters.

Watched Saint Joan this evening. Richard Widmark really stuck out with his performance of Charles. Solid flick. Definitely worth seeing again sometime.

Yo Bomby, would you consider Doubt to fall into this category? It didn't have a horse, but it fit most of the other parameters. I think it won some awards... I know it was nominated for a few. No English accents from what I could remember, either.

Hold your horses. It might one of the best films of the past decade and certainly one of the 3 best to come from the US, but there are quite a few movies that would like to have a word with you.

I actually haven't seen Doubt, but it looks like it might...

The most important thing about Bourgeoisploitation is that it has to have that god damn this is bourgeois as hell feeling to it. For example, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button doesn't have a great deal of what I listed, but I definitely consider it a part of the genre.

For the record, I actually kind of liked Benjamin Button.

There's been a James Bond marathon on TV the past few weeks, so I've been watching through them all. So far I've seen;
Dr. No
From Russia With Love
Goldfinger
Thunderball
You Only Live Twice
On Her Majesty's Secret Service
Diamonds Are Forever
Live And Let Die
The Man With The Golden Gun
The Spy Who Loved Me

My favourites so far are probably Goldfinger, and The Man With The Golden Gun.

Also saw Hall Pass last week, and I watched Kiki's Delivery Service today.

I don't think Doubt qualifies... it's actually a filmed play, not just a oscar vehicle. Also it's not especially English, doesn't have a horse, and doesn't end with a very hopeful tone.

There Will Be Blood... Honestly I barely remember watching it at all, though I know I wasn't especially impressed.

@Faz: What's the TV channel that's marathoning the Bond films? I'm asking because that's what's happening in Finland as well and The Spy Who Loved Me was aired last weekend with Moonraker coming up next Saturday.

The Spy Who Loved Me: With the great hype for it (and having no memories of it) I was expecting more from this flick. Certainly it's a solid Bond film, but fairly unremarkable after the extraordinary bit in Egypt. Pretty much everything from cinematography to writing became more generic right after they left Egypt.

Unless Faz is watching a cable channel; Seven Network has the rights to the Bond Films for free-to-air-TV as they marathoned the series last year between April and August and had a similar marathon around about when Casino Royale was announced.

Doubt isn't a Bourgeoisploitation Movie at all. I'd recommend it actually, it was a pretty good religious drama.

View Original PostBomby von Bombsville wrote:What is a Bourgeoisploitation Movie, you ask? The following may help constitute it:

1. It is a historical drama. Extra points if it is a biopic or an adaptation of Shakespeare. Even more extra points if its a biopic about Shakespeare. -- It could go either way here. It's based off of recent historical events, but I think the implication was that the movie takes place in the present.
2. People speak in Received Pronunciation (commonly called "the Queen's English"). Extra points if the movie does not take place in Britain. Even more extra points if the actors are not actually British. -- Nope
3. It has a sad and/or bittersweet ending. Extra points if it is supposed to teach you a lesson of hope. -- Sad-ish ending, definitely not teaching a lesson of hope though.
4. It was ostensibly made for the sole purpose of winning an Oscar for its aging lead star. Extra points if it will be his or her first Oscar. -- No. Meryl Streep is an aging star, but she is (and was at that point) already an incredibly accomplished actress. The film is certainly built to feature her, but only because she an essential character to begin with.
5. It has a solemn musical score that consists of either all piano or all stringed instruments. -- I don't remember, but probably.
6. The creators, stars, and audience are overwhelmingly white and upper-middle class. -- Not at all.
7. It has a horse in it. Extra points if the horse dies. -- No horse.
8. It is over two-and-a-half hours long. -- Nope, only 104 min.
9. It opens to rave reviews and is promptly forgotten a year later. -- Idk, I didn't follow it's popularity arc that closely.

Obviously not all these are necessary, and not all Bourgeoisploitation Movies are necessarily bad movies. It certainly is a genre unto itself, though.

If I were to rank the best movies of the past decade in no particular order, it'd be something like this:

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Yi Yi
There Will Be Blood
Talk to Her
No Country For Old Men
In the Mood for Love
The Lives of Others
