Re: Alternate Origin of Rei´s Name.
It's an interesting coincidence, but I think if that were the case, it would have been mentioned at some point.
Rei's name being a pun on zero, and being the same as Rei Hino from Sailor Moon, because supposedly Anno wanted to attract the attention of Kunihiko Ikuhara.

"Rei" is "King" in Portuguese, and Re is another pronunciation for Ra, the old Egyptian sun god. She's a thing, she's a king and she's a god. And she's a musical note in both the Indian and European Octaves!
Of course, if you want to be serious, the other meanings of "Rei" in Japanese are "command" (Shirei=Person in command=Commander, Gendo's title) and "ghost/spirit" (Yurei=ghost), which segues nicely with "nothingness" or "zero". And if I'm not mistaken, "Rei" would be how you translate "Shunya" or the Shunyavada Buddhist concept of the "Void", which is no simple philosophical concept. The "way of the void" encompasses just about everything in existence.
So...anyone else's head exploding now?

Lei is also "law" in portuguese.

Ehh... the only way I know how to say "lightning" in Mandarin is "shan3 dian4" (闪电), though Mandarin is a second language to me so "Rei" or "lei" could be a different way to say it that I'm unaware of. Also, there's actually an r/l difference in Mandarin.
Correction: "lei2 shang1" (雷声) is thunder.

I´ve always thought that 打雷 meant thunder(ing), if you want to be super accurate.
But lei2 does essentially mean thunder, afaik.
Translating chinese into english is super awkward.

So Rei is even more awesome then I previously thought? Excellent.

Considering what an abstract, near-blank slate, symbolic figure Rei is, I'm almost convinced that no matter what definition you found in what language in what country in what time it would have a high probability of describing Rei in some way.

It could mean "of a thing" and "to a thing" not simply "thing"; it's like saying that "I" (nominative, subject of the action) is the same as "me" (accusative, object of the action).
Latin is a nice language and logical language, the opposite of English.

Yeah, it's a simple name and there are good chance that the word exists in many other language, if it counts to swap the "r" with the "l", "Lei" is "She" in Italian for example.
So let’s make a wish.
