I originally watched the series in english due to my aversion of illegal attainment (the wait being too long and having a shitty computer - I got a new shining one, though) and the web player's refusal to play after pausing the video for more than five seconds - I've grown fond of the english voice actors' effort (except English!Ritsuko), though, I don't delude myself into thinking it's perfect. I still don't get the harsh reputation of Tiffany Grant's portrayal of Asuka, the english dub didn't lead to me thinking Asuka's a shrill, heartless harpy and she became my favorite character. I especially liked her performance in EoE and honestly prefer it over Yuko's (who I found highly annoying for awhile) .....

But never mind that, I've seen a number of episodes of Eva with subtitles, and I liked it. I don't think I missed anything in particular by not watching it first, so I'm less tempted to rewatch the series completely. It's definitely the superior work, in my opinion, despite my reluctance but I'll eventually get to it watching it. Oh, and Spike and Allison have come a long way since the first ep of NGE and do a fantastic job in Rebuild, I hope Grant reprises her role.

Note: It's really hard to yell "Don't leave me alone!" and "Please care about me!" at the top of your lungs without sounding somewhat whiny. I tried and failed.

I tend to not mind watching it in English or Japanese. It depends on what mood I'm in. If I'm watching it late at night, I'll probably watch it in English due to not wanting to be on high alert. But If I'm watching it during the day, I watch it usually in the Japanese dub, and that' also on my computer most of the time. So if I miss something, it's way easier to go back and catch it.

Also, I tend to think of the person doing Misato's voice to be more annoying. I also can't get use to the English dubbing for Shinji. He just sounds less pathetic.

I agree that the dub of Rebuild 1.11 is great (although I desperately miss Fuyutsuki and Gendo's original dub VAs). Plus Eva-01's dubbed Rebuild roar sounds much better. In the Japanese it sounds like an angry forklift. But's that a whole other debate.

Well, that is what happens when you have English dubbing from Japanese.

Just started, and right off the bat, went for Japanese. I really didn't mind reading the subtitles at all, except for in this horrible torrent I got for 2.22, where the text was spaced out incredibly too much. But as far as subtitles go, I really don't care. I don't regret watching it in Japanese; I got a much 'fuller effect,' from watching it in Japanese, instead of English, where most emotions don't come off as they should.

I downloaded a ton of dubbed versions that were English, and not Japanese the other day, but I realized reading subtitles really isn't that much of an extra task. I got the full-effect and emotion that the producers, and voice-specialists put into the movie, by watching the subbed version, but again, it all just depends on what you like, and how you're going to remember the experience. If you want to watch English, who's going to stop you? Nobody. Do what makes you happy; and watch whichever version is going to give you a better experience, or remembrance.

I know this may be controversial, but I ALWAYS watch the dubbed for any anime I watch. It may just be laziness, but I also feel that despite the job of the usually shitty American voice actors, the emotion flows much better from an understandable language than from text. For instance, I've watched EoE in English and Japanese, and I felt much more emotionally interested and invested in the Dub. I know that most of the voice actors aren't as good as the Japanese, but I feel as though emotion flows much easier through a known language then from subtitles alone.

I watch Eva dub. But that's only because that's how I first saw it. If I first watch a show dubbed I find it hard to watch it subbed, and visa versa. Once I'm used to characters having certain voices, I find it hard to then watch them with different voices it just sounds too weird.

That and I think Misato's voice is velvet sex.

Though one day I will watch the whole thing subbed.

Just my two cent here.
Maybe because I'm such a japanophile, I tend to watch only the subbed version. Personally, in my humble opinion, dubbed version would ruin the whole character all of the Seiyuus have created, since the Seiyuus (Japanese voice actor/actresss) had been chosen very carefully to suit their role ideally by the producer (in this case, Anno-sama, or Gainax, correct me here if I'm wrong.) and breathe each of the character 'alive'. (Not that I'm trying to say all english dubbers are randomly picked :P)

For example, like LeCapEtan said, Asuka's seiyuu is horrible at german, but once you switch her into dubbed version, I thought, that isn't the "Asuka".

Secondly I love reading, it wouldn't be too much of a hassle for me to both watch/listen and read, as it's also another method to learn Japanese language. (I can understand Japanese but mostly when people speak, I'm suck at reading Japanese kanji's)

And I do watch English movies with Subtitles too.

Other than that I usually watch it subbed. I love Asuka's and Shinji's seiyū.

That's awesome. I haven't tried watching an episode of something. I think I'd just be exhausted after-wards, but I find it cool you do that. I'd probably do it on the bikes if anything. ;)

Dubbed, because it makes it easier to focus on the plot, visuals, and thematics because I don't have to read tons of subtitles. Plus the voices are extremely well-done in it. I seriously had no complaints about them. I thought the emotional aspects were depicted extremely well in both.

Dub. It was actually pretty nicely done and you end up getting ear raped either way. But also, usually, I'll watch an anime, then I'll feel like going to the bookstore so I'll get some manga, of stuff I've watched. Same thing, really. It's watching the picture while reading the dialogue. But while I'm watching anime, I don't want to read the dialogue because I'll focus on that and tend to ignore the plot completely.

If I'm screening a foreign-language production on the television receiver in my living room, where the comfy chair is located, I appreciate dubbing more than subtitles. I used to swear by subtitles, but they've become much smaller in recent years and are harder to read from across the room.

However, if I'm screening such a presentation on my computing system then I prefer subtitles. Eighteen inches' distance to the screen is more than adequate for reading even the tiniest subtitles.

Dubs 90% of the time. It's more convenient.
The only time I watch Subs is when ether the Dubs are really bad or just dont exist.
