Hmm... I don't see much of an attitude in Eric's post. At least there are people sounding mean or using swear words in evageeks while his post is firm in his position but not aggressive in tone. Perhaps other people read it differently....
Anyway, as I said before, Re-Take works a lot better for LAS fans (LAS is the jargon used in Japan for Love Asuka x Shinji). All the other characters, including Rei, got short shrift in Re-Take. I admitted I was shocked to see Rei went down to the level of using paint to change her hair color, although I do not see it as entirely out of character (as Eric said, even the official/semi-official rendering of characters in Eva differ quite a bit). If I have to list the flaws in Re-Take, handling of Rei would come up top. That said, its power to resonate with my heart is what counts for me, despite the flaws.
I would like to stress that I have seen over a hundred of artists drawing Eva doujin and Kimigabuchi is near the best in rendering the Eva art style and character design like the original. He may have copied a few scene set-up from official material but the vast majority seem to be his own, a result of studying very deeply how the characters are drawn in Eva. The ease to visually associate characters in Re-Take with those in the original helps tremendously in my case to identify with its story. I think this is the power of manga, with its visual element combined with storytelling.
