EDIT: Come to think of it, can anyone think of an example where fanfiction has been hailed this greatly? I mean seriously, Re-Take is pretty much mandatory reading for an Evafan now.

I think every fandom has one or two fanfics that are so expertly done that they have a large importance on the fandom...or at least are extremely popular, and are the measuring stick for the other fics.

Isn't EVA-R also considered a widely-hailed NGE fanfic? I heard that it was "sanctioned" by GAINAX, but the writer(s) do(es)n't consider it canon.

it WAS widely held when it started

I think it was the first well-known Evangelion fan fic in the English-speaking world

it was (and still probably is) the most expensively produced fan fic EVAR

but that was almost a decade ago

and contrary to the urban legend, it was NOT sanctioned or affiliated with Gainax or Anno-sensei other than the use of its names and characters

here's MOAR on the guy who wrote it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subi

I read some of that, and it appeared to me as a pretty lame attempt to cash in some interest by expanding on the more easily digested aspects of Eva. Which would be a textbook example of shitty fanfics.
Don't mind me tho, I have no clear opinion on it.

Looking back, I'm inclined to agree.

Not that my own efforts are particularly good.

Your fanfic is the only worthwhile one I've read recently, minus the Christmas special.

Eva-R, I think, has been surpassed by many other fanfics.

Many other fanfics.

violent pornography, even moreso than most other H-artists.

Um?? The only "violent porn" scenes I recall in Re-take is that flashback to Asuka getting raped by the harpies. Everything else sexual-wise, eg the stuff between Shinji and Asuka seems like typical H-doujin fare. (Them going at it like rabbits and loving every minute of it. :P)

Actually, Re-Take is about the kindest of their doujins. You should see this Azumanga doujin they did.

@ Kaysow: Agreed. While Boku no Evangelion, another Eva doujin of theirs, is only sorta bad with it's ending, I heard that in general Studio Kimigabuchi is known for their stories having depressing endings.

Yeah, I only flipped through that one in Japanese and it looked depressing enough for me. Dunno if it's been translated, or if I wanna read it if it is.

<----was shocked the first time I saw it too.

But it IS sort of the "Evangelion Heritage". I'm not big on lengthy books, so among the heaviest shit I've experienced is Evangelion. That's probably true for a lot of people, so in a sense, Kimigabuchi are elaborating on what Anno may have started when he killed everyone off in EoE.

I think you mean what Yoshiyuki "Kill 'Em All" Tomino started after Ideon.

That picture, shocking as it was, got me intrigued. From what I know of Azumanga Daioh, it's extremely upbeat and nutty, the only semblance of darkness in the story being some sort of camp-fire tale where amusingly, Osaka turns out being the murderer.
How the hell did they manage to make Azumanga Daioh 'Dark' ?

Found a blog here...

http://blog.goo.ne.jp/alpha623/e/cfb15d5955f42a94aa9e9d733cfd8084

...Which seems to be about Kimigabuchi works in general. Seems that this Azumanga Daioh Douijin may be a rippoff of Lord of the Flies. And, as far as I can tell, Osaka is, indeed, the murderer.

Anyway, back to topic. One thing I could never understand about RE-take was Kaworu's role in events. He appears briefly, saying he wants to kill Shinji (?), than is eaten up by Eva-01 after a small speech about Shinji's twisted-ness. Something that really got to me was that, before he is snatched, he actually looks visibly scared. Why do I see a lot of Jesus Christ correlations there?
