I'm the same, can't use wallpapers with text because my windows are transparent. These are just ones that I've archived from /w/, and on occasion, there is a kindly anonymous that will de-text wallpapers on request. Other than that, you can either try to contact the person who made it (but that one in particular doesn't have a source) or find someone with better photoshop-fu than me. Sometimes I de-text wallpapers that I personally use, but that's very rare because I can only use ones that are very low contrast and dark (and the de-texting has to be easy).

Don't know if people are still going through these wallpaper thumbnails, but I see quite a few referrers from evageeks.org (and from drinian) in the webserver logs. Also lots of baidu and seesaa.net and mixi referrers too, apparently the link has been posted to Japanese blogs and forums as well as the reiliberation parade (AA's site), some french site, and some phillipines site.

Dunno if that link will work, I've added evageeks.org to the allowed referrers for the nge_bg directory. I recently realized that the cron script that generates the thumbnails weren't generating ones that started with "119". So there were plenty of new ones that never got thumbnailed.

btw, this Japanese guy shows up in the THAT BOARD irc channel and posts a bunch of image archives, which included several hundred wallpapers. From what I vaguely remember on Manga-Kaji's backstory, it's Kaji, his brother (dunno where he is though, lol), and their buddies.
