I have addressed this in my new article about the lines. Reichu helped out, too!

Dan is directly credited as the translator for this new release.

I recently finished watching EoE in netflixes new dub. Up until now I’ve mostly watched it with the Manga dub. I was surprised with some of the differences. I was especially surprised with the following;

* Asuka sounding turned on by the prospect of watching Shinji pleasuring himself to her. In the old dub it sounds more like she’s mocking him when she tells him to do it in front of her.
* Shinji telling Asuka that he wants to be with her forever and that she’s the only one for him. It’s been a while since I’ve watched EoE but I don’t remember anything like that in the old dub.

Are these new translations/interpretations an accurate reflection of what’s being said in Japanese? :???:

The old dub was much more pathetic and definitely wasn’t a declaration of love, regardless of whether it’s sincere or just Shinji being selfish or not.

Despite being an arch a/s shipper I prefer it the old way. The new dub is definitely a mixed bag.

In the old dub I felt Shinji was being honest and pure, or at least he thought he was but Asuka was having none of it.

In the new dub I think Shinji is just being a fucking asshole who is trying to worm his way into Asuka's good graces after seeing what her mind had desired.

And the whole offering to sit there and watch him jerk off doesn't mean anything because it comes with a higher stipulation, she'd only do it if he belonged to her.

I agree with this and because they've changed the EOE confrontation to something along the lines of it being him confessing his love, he comes of as a super dangerous fuck boy who's romantic advances got spurred hence he acts out in violence because he cant get what he wants, which hurts his character so badly and makes him even less like able when you add the hosbital scene in to the mix.

Where as in oringal it was a plea for help which Asuka reacts to in a hedgehog dilemma kind of way by raising her spines and going no hence his action feel more like a crazy moment of violence because he is in such a bad place emotionally and the oringal hosbital scene becomes more a moment of stupidity and him doing a very bad thing which he clearly feel guilty about afterwards.

As a “Subs Only” kinda guy, I’m sure you’d all love to hear my opinion of the already-8-pages-deep topic. So here goes.

“eVeRy MiSsiLe hIt thE tArGet,” guy sound more natural. I can no longer laugh at this.

In fact, the performances as a whole sound a lot more natural, I just kinda wish the words they said also sounded that way. I respect the English VAs ability to say awfully dumb and terrible, grammatically incorrect things like “[Shinji] is the Third Children,” as though it were normal. (If you were to ask me, the English dubs should have always used non-English words for “First Children,” “Second Children,” etc., just like the original Japanese dub used non-Japanese words for that same titles. Awesome battle names always sound better to English speakers when spoken in German, Asuka’s half German, and Gehern, Nerv, Seele are already German words, so I would suggest “Erste Kinder,” “Zweite Kinder,” or to really abuse the Rule of Cool, “Kindererste,” “Kinderzerite,” etc.) Translationally, “worthy of my grace” sorta makes sense, but nobody speaks like that and I don’t think Kaworu’s character is the type to comedically misuse Earth Language, so...

Unfortunately this weird, unnatural grammar might seem distractingly silly and stupid to newcomers, so I honestly don’t know which is better; a sillier dub with serious grammar, or a serious dub with sillier grammar. Both are racially distracting to me.

Anyway, Megumi Ogata is lovely as always, so I’ll be watching those Japanese dubs on my Japanese BD release instead.

I mean, say what you will about the performances, but if the above is accurate,

The subs have Dan's name credited at the end right there on the screen, so there's no need to feel uncertain about it.

No translation of EoE is going to make Shinji look good. The little bastard had his mommy shepherd him across the chasm of ego death and threw a tantrum because Asuka needed a minute to get her bearings after reconstituting herself through sheer willpower. He’s not the hero, she is. That’s the brilliance of Eva, it’s a story where the actual protagonist gets punted into the brash ace pilot sidekick role because the boss has a doofus son and a psychotic two hundred foot tall cannibal wife.

The whole thing is a commentary on office culture.

Which is more accurate to the Japanese acting is what I’m wondering though?

I will maintain until my dying day that if Asuka was the one with an unlimited power supply in her Eva she would have won. Also, hot dogs are not sandwiches.

The new dub hews closer to the original by a landslide. There is plenty of room for improvement, for sure, but in terms of "which one is more like Anno's Eva?" it isn't even a contest.

I've been watching more of the German dub, and I have to say, it's not as bad as I thought. Somehow, the scenes I've sampled were amongst the worst offenders, lol.

After a few days of sleeping on it, my verdict is:

In terms of the script, other than "3rd children" and Asuka's "balls to the wall" I think the Netflix version is fine.

In terms of the cast and delivery;
I'd say the new Kaji, Ritsuko, Maya, Shigeru, Fuyutsuki are fine.
And the old VAs for Shinji, Asuka, Rei, Misato, Gendo, Toji, Kaworu, Hyuga are better.

The soundtrack in the old dub is better (thanks to Fly Me to the Moon) and for a few eva cockpit sounds that got muted in the new version.

--

Overall my ideal NGE would be the new script but with the old VA cast.

I concur completely with this sentiment. Except for "balls to the walls" "I like you" "I'm the lowest of the low" and replacing "So fucking what if I'm not you?!"

My uncertainty was more so based on whether or not he's Khara's in-house translator, which apparently I guess he is.

SawItAtAge10 wrote:Great, so now we know who to crucify...I'm still sticking to calling this new version Netflix Genesis Evangelion though...

This is pretty much the entire reason for my post. If Dan is really Khara's own de-facto Japanese > English translator, then that would seem to indicate that they hand-picked him to perform the translation for the new sub/dub, and it really isn't any fault of Netflix.

Whether or not Khara had approval over dub performances is (as far as I know) unknown, but given the stink that they raised over Funimation's handling of 3.0, it wouldn't surprise me if they had to OK it as well.
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996
