"Cut December 2014" Interview with Sadamoto

So I have found this in the Pixiv wiki, in the Kawoshin and in the Asuka pages, both in the sections concerning Sadamoto's manga:

Cut2014年12月号のインタビューで貞本氏は
「カヲルはシンジのことを一番わかってくれている存在なんですよね。わかっているが故に、僕のことを本当に好きだったら殺して欲しいと、矛盾に満ちた踏み絵を突きつけるっていうね」「現実的にシンジが“人を好きになる”ことと向き合うエピソードで、カヲルを存在させたっていうことです」とコメントしている。

Google Translation for us plebs wrote:Mr. Enomoto in the interview of Cut 2014 December issue
"Kawl is the one who knows the best about Shinji. Because he knows, if you really like me, I want you to kill me, and you will get a contradiction of a stepping picture" He commented that Shinji actually had Kaoru in an episode that confronts "becoming like people" in a realistic way.

Nothing very surprising, in fact, besides Sadamoto observing Kaworu's innate observations on Shinji, and apparently his observation that Kaworu in his "the next thing you do is proof of what you really think of me" scene (as it is rendered in the official English translation, instead of this soulless machine translation).

This part from the Asuka article though:

Cut (カット) 2014年 12月号の貞本エヴァインタビューによると「最終回に出てくるアスカは、これまでの本編でのアスカではなくて、次の新しい世界でも知りあえるであろう魅力的な女性の象徴として出している」とのことで、シンジとの恋愛的な意味は無いと発言している。

Google translation wrote:Cut According to the interview with Enomoto Eva in the December 2014 issue, "Asuka coming out in the final round is not an Asuka in the main story so far, but an attractive woman who will also know in the next new world" It is said that it has no romantic meaning with Shinji.

Again nothing too special besides the idea that this is a new Asuka and a new Shinji and she isn't automatically enamored with him. Do notice the "no romantic meaning" is not a quote from the translation but rather inserted by the wiki, though other part of the article state she does have feelings for him in EoE and Ep 22 etc.

Regardless of the fact that these two specific quotes don't really add much, I am interested to see if anyone has that interview, and possibly if anyone is able to translate it, if it does offer any more additional information.

It's a paraphrase. と発言している = [according to the interview Sadamoto] says that(...).

Interesting, thank you. Then again, paraphrases are still the pixiv editor's opinion, that is, someone else's interpretation, and it can be misleading too. Nonetheless, I think the general idea is simply that Sadamoto is simply stating that those characters are "blank canvases" and them seemingly having a memory of each other doesn't mean they have new feelings for one another. Which does seem to go hand in hand with the manga's ending of it being open-ended into a new future and all.

Oooh, found this in the Reishin page now:

漫画版ではより二人の関係や「手を繋ぐこと」に焦点が当てられている。また、「レイとシンジの想いは男女間の恋愛」、両想いであるとCut2014年12月号の作者インタビューで言及されている。

Google translation wrote:In the cartoon version, the focus is more on the relationship between the two people and "connecting hands." In addition, “Rei and Shinji's feelings are love between men and women” , and both feelings are mentioned in the interview with the author of Cut 2014 December issue.

I guess this confirms most people's suspicions that the Manga was written with Reishin in mind after all...

I've been telling ppl that its canon since the proposal sketch.

That said Sadamoto isn't always unambiguous on this like right after the finale came out there was an interview where he seemed to go with the semi-maternal interpretation.

Ovsly that doesn't mean that Asuka's and Shinji's reincarnations couldn't be involved later just that they aren't yet, and like the point with the "hands" as a motif for the many kinds of encounters one can have and hence that this scene shows how instrumentality was averted and ppl continue to interact.
What's more relevant is that he confirmed that they are indeed reincarnations or at least "different versions"

It would be really nice to have the actual quotes with proper grammar (esp the Kaworu oneLike is he implying sadism or just insight?) so as to not take other ppls word for it/ form ones own opinion properly.

In December 2014 Cut Magazine interview Sadamoto makes the following comments:
"Kaworu is the one who understands Shinji the best of them all. Although he understands, Kaworu consequently thrusts a contradictory fumi-e at Shinji by asking Shinji to kill him if he really loves him."

"To make Shinji confront in reality a situation in which he 'comes to love a person' Kaworu was made to exist."

Going by Sadamoto's interview in December 2014 Cut Magazine "Asuka that appears in final chapter is not same Asuka who has appeared so far, she appears as a symbol of attractive female who Shinji is sure to meet in the next world too" is how things stand, Sadamoto claims the ending implies nothing romantic regarding her tie with Shinji.

In manga version the relationship between the two and "handholding" are brought into focus. In addition, "Rei and Shinji's feelings are those of love between man and woman", Sadamoto affirms in December 2014 Cut Magazine interview their love is mutual.

Xard's translation is on point, though the snippets up on the shipping pixiv entries (via the Cut magazine interview—I vaguely remember hearing about that when it first came out, too) just go to show my personal preference of Anno's Eva. For one, Shinji's got mixed up feelings for all 3 ladies (at least initially before things go all to hell).

Also it's for me to not be a little :asuka_stare: regarding Asuka in the final chapter isn't the manga Asuka, simply reincarnated—what would that make of Shinji and Kensuke, in this "new world", then? Especially how Shinji (still) has Misato's necklace with him and the fossilized MP Evas....

Though that's how I always interpreted it, unfortunately just makes Asuka in the ending feel more meaningless. I understand Sadamoto might be going for a purely thematic ending, but that essentially makes the actual story and characters meaningless because "their" world ended as did their existence, without resulting in anything. In EoE, Shinji's story didn't end, only a part of it, and the rest was just beginning. In the manga, he might as well be Simon because we're talking about essentially an entirely different character that didn't go through Shinji's trials.

Sadamoto is such a hack. :/

Yeah, "meaningless" is exactly the issue I take with it. I have no problem with the underlying idea of "Lilin/the Earth reincarnated post-3I*, memory wipe and all"...It's the execution of it that leaves much to be desired. I mean, what's the point of manga Shinji's journey, then...? *And if that's not the point that Lilin can find happiness now, then WTF is?

Though I never really enjoyed the Eva manga, I'm venting out of the frustration that it could have been something really special, since some of the "new" story elements (like Kaji's backstory, or Shinji grieving for Toji actually dying) were quite interesting.

Sadamoto is an amazing illustrator, one of the best in the whole industry, and I think he should stick to that...

He definitely should stick to illustrations since his art's seriously excellent, but it's a shame he couldn't keep his extreme views, uh, private since it left a lot of understandably angry fans.

I might have liked, or at least respected the change of Manga!Shinji vs NGE!Shinji, if Sadamoto had gone full Natsuki Subaru with him, and made his flaws a clear result of his anti-social habits/upbringing. Something he needed to overcome, just in a different vein from NGE.

As presented, he just feels closer to a typical hot-headed shounen protagonist.

Things are different because they needed to be, I get that. But the writer still has a duty to make it interesting.

I'm looking at you, Digimon 2020.

I've been rereading though Sadamoto's Eva, just because it's different from NGE and NTE, I haven't revisited it as often as the Anno Eva, and because it's sightly different and I've forgotten a lot of the unique narrative touches. (Seeing Rei pilot Unit 01 in the first chapters, for example, was still shocking on the second time around.) But I do remember the ending feeling a little.... "deflated" on my first reading. Still, I'll continue to reread it just to have some marginally fresher Eva stories in front of my eyes that don't devolve into complete fan fic aesthetics. (Most of what I hear about Shinji Ikari Rising Project sounds really fun, even if in a fan-fic-y sort of way, but is definitely not what I'm in the mood for with the Shin Eva delay. Sadamoto's Eva, at the very least, is a bit closer to that, even if it still misses the mark considerably in a few ways.)

And, yeah, Sadamoto's more xenophobic views can go jump in a fire. I adore his character designs whenever I see them, but I'm not a fan of watching Summer Wars or Wolf Children and being subconsciously reminded, "Oh yeah, every one of these characters is designed by a racist, or at least by someone who acts like one online."
