Rebirth is totally different from the Manga version (Air). There are different audio takes everywhere. They used different music cues in many cuts, most recycled from the TV series. When Misato is giving the revelation of the Angels and humans, there is some really haunting pipe organ music in the background. etc.

Interesting stuff! I had no idea about the organ music— I'd love to hear that!

It's just the same tune (BGM title escapes me) used in TV 25 and such, when everyone's telling Shinji it was his choice to start Instrumentality/he shut out the world he hated, etc.

Can anyone confirm for me if the stereo mix on the Renewal/Blu-ray Discs is the broadcast mix? I was listening to Episode 1 on the Broadcast DVD and there seems to be missing music and lines. I know it was stated that somethings were cut from broadcast audio due to information overload. Just wanted to know if the audio is exclusive to Archives DVD.

It's a little weird that the creepy schoolyard song (Open hands, close hands) from End of Evangelion is listed as its own feature (as opposed to being listed with the other music tracks.)

Listening to the audition tapes, it's kinda interesting hearing Megumi Hayashibara read Rei's lines with a bit more life to them. (Was that just me maybe?)

Ath said that the stereo audio on the Renewal/Blu-ray releases should be the same as the original VHS/LD releases. Whether or not there were audio changes between the original TV broadcast and that initial home video release, I don't know.

View Original Postath wrote:Just did a quick check - the audio on the BDs follows the same format as Renewal. The main track is the 5.1 mix from Renewal but the the secondary 2.0 track is still the audio from the Video & LD edition, not a straight 5.1->2.0 mixdown.
You can check for yourself switching the two audio tracks in Episode 1.

Gah. Tried this site for help with my BD drive woes, but no joy. This is so frustrating! If I have an up to date player and decoder, does that mean my drive is out of date? Or are the player and encoder not up to date after all? I hate flailing about like this; I have my damn disks, I should be able to watch them! I don't mind shelling out some cash to deal with the problem, but I don't even know what the problem is!

I'll check my Renewal DVD when I get home. Likewise, I figured the stereo mix is from the original DVDs.

I hear ya, man. Here's what I actually had to do to get my BDs working on my computer: http://www.macblurayplayer.com

It usually goes for about $60 USD, but every so often they got a sale on it. I bought it for around $30 for my iMac, and it works pretty well. (They got a Windows version as well.) I wasn't able to view BD menus on it for a while, but they've got that feature in beta right now and it's been working for a few of my discs. Either way, you can play the BD movies and shows themselves by using the toolbar menu to select certain titles encoded on the disc. I'm using it, and I like it. Especially since I was never able to get any of the VLC add-ons to work.

I've looked at some footage, and it looks sooo clean and nice. Can't wait for more to come out or for it to get licensed.

And I love lurking and reading the fanbase discuss and tear apart everything from even a new DVD release. Keep doing what you do, I'm thankful for the reading.

Now I kind of feel like an idiot. I went through all the DVDs I have for Episode 01 and listened to the same cut. Renewal stereo track is identical to Broadcast audio. It's just been so long that I don't even remember the piece of music NOT being in there.

Episode 01 - Cut 294
Renewal/Blu-ray Disc 5.1: BGM Start: E-3 [EVA-01]
Renewal/Blu-ray Disc Stereo: No BGM
Original US Stereo: No BGM
Broadcast Stereo: No BGM

You know, I don't think I've ever heard the Japanese broadcast audio. ADV only provided the 5.1 surround sound for their Japanese dub, and I just had my player do an automatic stereo down mix of that.

This is my solution as well; the same for playing physical BDs or BD images.

Looks like the U.S. version is "only" $40. But the free demo worked, so I guess that's my only option. And hey, it works, so I'll take it! Now I just gotta figure out how to import subtitle tracks and I should be good to go.

In other news, I grabbed a subbed copy of a BD rip and . . . holy shit, is that pretty! Sounds great, too. This is easily the best purchase I've made in quite some time.

This mix talk makes me realize that I've never watched Evangelion with the 5.1 mix because I've never had a proper surround system. I'll have the watch the series with the 5.1 mix if I can get my hands on the bluray.

I think you need to give some further explanation of that remark for it to be taken seriously.

This doesn't make sense. Are you trying to say "I never experienced the full sonic fidelity that is a discreet 5.1 audio mix on a killer hi-fi surround sound system" or are you literally saying "I've never listened to the 5.1 mix because I switch the audio track to the stereo mix because, you know, I only got two speakers; where are the other 3.1 channels gonna go?"?

Platinum only has 5.1 mixes. Renewal defaults to 5.1 (as I found out, you have to switch it to stereo and then you hear the broadcast mix). Original US and Japanese DVDs only have the stereo broadcast mix.

Even if you have 2 speakers, DVDs and Blu-ray Disc players (as well as TVs and audio receivers) are designed to downmix multichannel audio to stereo, unless bit streaming is set (there's a bit more that goes into this, but for reasons, let's just say this is normal). So even if you have only two speakers, a 5.1 mix will still play in stereo. L and R obviously go to L and R, C is lowered (?) by 25%(?) and sent to both L and R, and SL and SR are lowered by 50%(?) and sent to L and R respectively (my levels adjustments may be off, but that is essentially how downmixing works). LFE is usually nixed unless you have full range speakers or a separate subwoofer. So you still hear everything even if you just have two speakers.

But yeah, you should experience this on a 5.1 surround sound system. Even scenes as simple as the Command Center are given so much space. There are techs on the rear channels talking up a storm and just lends to its environment.

Yes. I've just finished rewatching the different versions of Episode 01 and I'm basically 100% sure that both audio tracks are taken straight from Renewal. I've compared every cut with Archives and I haven't found any differences between the Renewal/BD 2.0 track and the broadcast mix.
The 5.1 mix is supposed to add a few background lines (see svenge's post) but I believe it adds a few "foreground" takes too (see Maya's "Ryokai" in C269 ep 01 that's missing from the 2.0 track).

I'm not sure that my mixdown setup is working correctly though - could someone with a good 5.1 setup please check if Shinji's sighs from C046 and C311 of Episode 1 are really missing from the 5.1 mix? Thanks.
