I meant more the composition/framing of that shot. I might be misinterpreting but i wasn't referring to the similarity in the captain persona with "lolQ".

I'm enjoying this show very much, not only is the ED great but the OP too. The ONAs aren't really necessary to enjoy the series though, from what I hear the footage from them is being inserted into each episode, so in the end they will all be covered in the tv series anyway.

The original air-time was a slot aimed at children. This was long before the late night otaku anime slot came into being.

Summer season has wrapped up... (I know, I'm late to this party)

Uchouten Kazoku was a wonderful experience, I'll never forget the animation which did not only work perfectly with the story the show tried to tell, but also managed to be breathtakingly beautiful at some occasions. I loved the casual feeling the series emitted; it never stopped to convey this unusual lighthearted feeling even at the most tragic moments this tale had to offer. The only thing I'm conflicted about is that we never got to see more than just glimpses of how Benten was really ticking. On the other hand it made her character much more interesting. Lovely until the end!

Gatchaman Crowds was a mess, but a lovely one for that. It often was all over the place, but I liked the social-media-theme. Definitely not a great series, but entertaining as hell, due to Hajime. I can imagine that if you can't stand her, you'll have a hard time overlooking all the flaws this series had. The art style was amazing, although the animation itself suffered severe cases of QUALITY. It was a nice watch, but nothing I would watch again. Nevertheless, I’m in for season 2, of course.

WATAMOTE was heartbreakingly funny. 'nuff said.

Gin no Saji is not over yet, but the first season was very solid. Although I (being a vegetarian) really do NOT share the opinions of the people in the show concerning the whole meat topic, I could accept it because it was handled very well. The characters really came alive and it managed to make me laugh. Never expected that from a series about a farm. Cool series, I might be in for season 2.

This season is intense. I'm not sure if I've lowered my standards, or if there just too many interesting series this fall.

Copellion
I love the art style and the setting is cool too. Its biggest flaw is, that it’s going overboard with it's drama too often though, which is a pity, because if it was a little more subdued it would work a whole lot better for me. I'm still entertained by it, so I'll stick with it for now.

Yozakura Quartett
The show itself is horrible, but the animation and those sudden splashes of DARK DARK DARK and the animation make it bearable.

Samurai Flamenco
I don’t know… It is good for what it is, but the whole superhero premise is kind of annoying. It has it’s moments though. I’ll keep watching it for now, especially since Episode 3 spiced things up a bit.

Galilei Donna
If I manage to get over the severe case of silliness this series emits, I’ll be entertained… I think. I mean… a goldfish-mecha built by a child? Come on.
Other than that it promises to be an thrilling experience with cool characters (I especially like the black haired one) and beautiful character-design.

Kill la Kill
This show is absolutely bonkers, but in a good way. It’s entertainment in it’s purest form, so if Trigger can keep it up all until the end (which I strongly believe), then we’re in for a good show.

Kyoukai no Kanata
I was sceptic until Episode 3 due to the fact that the series can’t decide what kind of series it wants to be. I’m always in for mood swings, but they are coming out of nowhere and that makes the direction seem a little bit sloppy. The character-design is beautiful, glasses girl is beautiful and I love her; the MC is a cool guy, the others are okay. From the shop owner I get a serious xxxholic-vibe, haha. The animation is technically very well done, but as with all Kyo-ani series it fails to really impress me, because it is kind of… tame. I don’t know, how to describe it, but it doesn’t have a lot of personality.
Nevertheless Episode 4 sold me.

Kyousogiga
Episode 0 was a big Party which I didn’t manage to follow, thus I wasn’t too invested in it. But the first „real“ Episodes portrayed the people in Mirror Capital very well, so I’m in for that too. This series feels like a mixture between Uchouten Kazoku and FLCL… Which is not a bad thing. The animation is gorgeous.

I’m also currently checking out Steins; Gate… As it stands (Episode 11), I cannot really see what the fuss is all about, but it’s certainly not too bad. I like the character interaction and the bleak colours, so I’ll be contend with that until it gets awesome (as promised by everyone).

Wolf Children was a pleasant surprise as well. Mamoru Hosada makes the strangest premises work, doesn’t he?

@robersora: Uchouten kazoku is based on the first novel of a trilogy so we may see a continuation to the anime series at some point in the future.

Well, apart from all those hilarious island episodes the plot doesn't seem to be really aimed at kids. Of course that's because of that bastard, Anno.

I'm sure this same shot is in USY remake at least (if not original), all that fucking guy does is retreat into the space between his collar and his hat before mumbling "something something, manly virtue, return nipponese clay"

Yeah.

FWIW same goes for Gurren Lagann while Dennou Coil was NHK education film in terms of airing position. :hahaha:

I think 2199 was free of the WWII revanche subtext of original to almost disappointing degree - having Yamato under construction masquerading as remains of the warship makes no more sense than in original but the symbolism of its "revival" gets lost as irrelevant tidbit and loyalty to original presentation since the general structure of work and some of the themes are so different.

The overt nationalist blathering of the original is conveniently mislaid, sure, but at the risk of stating the obvious, they ARE a bunch of Japanese (even the Martian is Japanese!!) flying around a giant penis called The Japanese Nation, design of which is based on the pride & joy of Imperial Japan's military...but of course THEY'RE not fascists, ha ha, why would you even think that THEY'RE fascists. I mean they're fighting space Nazis chrissake, they've got to be good guys. Right?

I mean, no shit 2199 was free of the revanche subtext by comparison to the original. Doubtless there's an intelligent critique to be made here of how the messaging of the Japanese right has moved on from being straightforward nostalgia for fascism and has developed a degree of subtlety in its nostalgia for fascism in order to satisfy the tastes of a presumably enlightened public (compare the Southern strategy, only a little more so), but as I don't actually give a shit about 2199 beyond its being a nice middle ground between old Trek and LoGH in the spectrum of science fiction telly --

Well, watched the first three episodes of Kyousogiga (tv), this is so far my favorite show of the season and I really suggest you all watch it if you haven't already.

I'm probably overthinking this given it's based on a 30 year old jingoistic cartoon but I was always under the impression that the Yamato was out of necessity build upon the remains of the sunken ship which explained its looks (back then Yamato's wreck wasn't found yet and the writters had no idea she laid on the ground broken in two), but after the second episode of 2199 it makes me wonder about the practicality of conceptualizing a spacecraft after a 250 year old naval vessel design. Also a one year voyage on board with all the female staff in these tight plugsuits....if this doesn't end in a complete disregard of duties I will be disappointed.

that was one hell of a battle!

I really like what the show does with the avatars. By learning the meaning behind human words/behaviour they continue to humanize which is a fitting theme when you think about the idea of ships having souls.

The Wings of Honneamise - A fair debut by Gainax with intriguing characters such as Shiro whose determination to be the first man in space is further amped by his interactions with the religious Leiquinni and her daughter. The score by Ryuichi Sakamoto is also to be commended especially in the moments leading up to the launch of the spaceship in the end beating with anticipation in the midst of all the warring nations in dazzling air and land combat.
"Damn it! Who do I have to screw around here just to get a stupid story?!" - Gail Hailstorm, author of the book You're Dead, I'm Rich (Scary Movie)
