This is not a camp I usually position myself in but Zero's CG is pretty great. It doesn't compare with Frontier's, sure, but it really stands apart from almost all of its peers from the era. There's a lot effort put into it and they even had mecha artist extraordinaire Tenjin Hidetaka draw what, 500 cuts/skins over the models all in all to make it mesh all the better? Then there's also the rather clever use of traditionally drawn mechas in cuts where CG failed to carry the weight or sense of scale required.

I'd say Bird Human and some of the early fighter jet scenes show their age most strongly but each time I see Zero more I love the rest of CG.

It also helps that of all mecha franchises I can think of Macross benefits the most from shift to CG. Zero has state of art action choreography from Itano and dogfighting (technically) far above the on its own ridiculously impressive Macross Plus - but Plus always was extraordinary instance of hand drawn mechanical animation far above the norm but not even it could hope to approach to mimic the dynamism and freedom of camera movement etc. that Zero got to unleash.

I wasn't criticizing it in any way, I just didn't like it much. The dogfights were pretty well... choreographed? I don't know what /m/aggots call it but that sounds right.

Edit: Apparently I can't read, it says it right in your post. Silly me.

I just watched "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time". Unfortunately, it was on Netflix, so I became a dub-peasant. I still found it enjoyable, and I must admit that Mikoto (sp?) looks a lot like Shinji.

That would probably be because Sadamoto did the designs for the characters in that movie. ;)

As far as the movie goes, I loved it. It may have been a little slow-paced at times, but it was on the whole a thoroughly enjoyable movie (and one of the only films to ever make me cry, animated or otherwise.) From an animation standpoint, it's great; from story, it's amazing. Of course, I usually dislike time travel films because I don't agree with the mechanics, but that's another story entirely. Glad you liked it!

Aim for the Ace! (1979)

Image

With all the Gunbuster talk recently I had to watch the Ace no Nare! movie, a wonderful oldschool shoujo sports anime with surpsingly decent animation that comes from a time when girls were still real girls with dreams and ambitions and women were actually build like a shit brickhouse. It's a classic coming of age story with superb Dezaki direction in which he uses his entire repertoire to bring out the high tension drama of tennis matches as well as a young girl's struggle with friendship, rivalry and an extremely demanding coachi.

The movie packs the entire first 26 episodes in an hour and a half so the pacing is notably crammed with little pauses to relax which makes me a bit regret not having seen the series first, though I'm hoping that someone is going to sub the second season one day so I can enjoy the full series in all its tennis glory.

Whoever wants to understand Gainax's inspiration for Gunbuster or can simply appreciate a good ol' motivational flick should check it.

Verdict: FAITO! FAITO! FAITO!

The Princess and the Pilot

Image

Well, well, if this wasn't one of the most unsubstantial and bloodless productions I've seen in a while. Its mediocrity would be downright offensive if I wouldn't be such a sucker for aviation and courtly love.

There really isn't much I can write about this. The story is a simple tale of a pilot having to escort a princess through enemy territories in which both start to build a relationship and learn to know and depend on each other. Yep, that's it, pretty much anything you expect from the title it follows by the book, so prepare yourself for almost two hours of forgettable romance and nonstop formulaic story telling. That said, despite my negative tone the movie has some solid art and animation, engaging flight action and I think what redeems it a little is a sense of romantic childhood dreams in which only the princess, the sky and you exist.

So yeah, it's not complete shit but don't expect anything like Porco Rosso.

Verdict: Shinji and Rei in the skies

I like how the characters are drawn in that. I don't think I've seen any 70's anime other than gendum.

It was so good it blew your mind too hard for you to give even a brief review?

The floaty camera makes ya feel like you're in a dream, the use of a whole bunch of different angles is cool, the eggsellent voice acting, the surprisingly smooth animation, and the depth of its family dynamic is why I give Imouto Paradise an 11/10.

Now that my online courses are finished, I'm itching to get back into anime. I've got a few of them ready to go on my computer, but I can't decide which to start with. I'll also be trying to catch up to some currently airing series, like OreImo 2 and Gargantia.

- Ghost in the Shell
- Eden of the East
- Welcome to the NHK!
- Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water
- Eureka Seven: AO

Any suggestions? I know I said I was going to start GitS at the beginning of June, but I'm not so sure anymore....
