The soul in Zerogouki

I think we need to strongly consider the possibility that Rei did not always have the soul of Lilith. I think there's a very good chance that she originally had her own human soul, which got sucked into Zero during an experiment like with Yui and Zeppelin. Gendo couldn't get her soul out, but needed her for his plans, so he takes Lilith's soul and puts it in Rei (or a clone thereof) instead.

Ritsuko states flat-out that they can't clone souls. Even if you dispute who Rei is clone of, surely you can't deny that she is a clone... so where is this hypothetical 'original' soul coming from?

It also makes much more sense if the soul in zero is lilith's, even if you want to go into this madness, because Rei only seems to awaken to her abilities and true nature after zero and Rei are fused.

I don't recall any Rei II/Eva 00 fusion at any point. She does make contact with the soul within the Eva in episode 23, but they're never FUSED, plus that's likely to be part of Rei I's soul she was communicating with (and we've already seen how part of a soul can reside within an Eva rather than the entire thing in the case of Kyoko). Rei I did have the soul of Lilith, but so did the subsequent Reis, so it can only be part.

There's a theory that when Unit-00 blew up, the resident soul was released (that oul being a fraction of Lilith's), and Rei II's soul was released too, and they were both put into Rei III as a Lilith's complete soul, which would explain why Rei III is more emotional.

Ohh, I rather like that idea! But wouldn't that mean they couldn't hope to use Reis I or II in Third Impact? I mean unless you can get away with sticking half a soul into Lilith's body, they'd have to bring the two together at some point, and if part was indeed in Eva 00 then it would eventually have to be extracted.
