Rei's apartment room number.

Do you think it stands for something? Anything?

or am I looking too too hard for symbols?

402 = 6

Instinct dictates that the camera's occasional focus on that number suggests some kind of relevance, but I'm sure once it's discovered it will be less than amazing. Probably a throwaway reference to another anime, or something having to do with the Gainax's surrounding community or a staffer. Or just nothing at all.

If you ignore the zero, it becomes 42, the most significant number in the universe!

The Ultimate Answer
Some time ago a group of hyper-intelligent pan dimensional beings decided to finally answer the great question of Life, The Universe and Everything.

To this end they built an incredibly powerful computer, Deep Thought. After the great computer programme had run (a very quick seven and a half million years) the answer was announced.

Which suggests that what you really need to know is 'What was the Question?'.

What was the number the computer gave on the angel analysis on ep5? Wasn't it also 402?

402=6 there are 3 numbers I think of it as 666 the anti-christ number
303=6 the same thing
601=7, 3 numbers, 777, God's number

7 is also refered to as the perfect number I do believe.
Yea and God said to Abraham, "You will kill your son Issac." And Abraham said, "I can't hear you, you'll have to speak into the microphone." And God said, "Oh I'm sorry, Is this better? Check, check, check... Jerry, pull the high end out, I'm still getting some hiss back here."

That reminds me of this conspiracy theorist I saw on TV once. He proved the American government was evil by performing various random operations using estimated figures from the measurements of a structure, and ended up with 666. Only that was less pitiful.

FYI the supposed number of the Beast is 616, according to an ancient scripture found. It was probably changed due to a mistranslation or something.

So if 666 is evil, then why was it given the name of the firewall in EoE, is it cause its a pain to break?

Let's not forget the parking lot where Misato tried to talk some sense into Shinji. On the commentary they said that 667 was the "neighbor to the beast", whatever that means. As to the topic, the only reason I bugged Man Chong into posting it was because of another anime, Monster. In that show, a character just as creepy and cool (but a bit more evil :wink: ) as Rei is hospitalized in room 402. I thought that perhaps the directors of both shows were thinking the same thing.

Sometimes numbers are significant, and at times they are very randomly chosen. A good example of numbers at play in Eva is Rei's name. Rei is a way of saying zero in Japanese. So it is fitting that Unit "Zero's" pilot's name would in fact be "Zero".

For a non-Eva reference, X-Files creator Chris Carter would often focus on digital clocks with 11:12 on it. 11:12 was another way of rendering November 12th, his wife's birthdate.

Given that Anno stated that he borrowed from everywhere, it is plausible that something like 402 may well have some obscure meaning to it, if perhaps only to the director.

I get the impression that some sort of biographical research could turn it up.

"Rei" is also one of the 7 codes of Bushido, "politeness".
