well...right when the slit formed it seemed a bit like one. but the one on Rei's head is the most obvious...i feel that the slit on 01 when the core was revealed wasnt genitalia...

It might make a little more sense if you think about it symbolically, as in an eye "being birthed".






If the eye socket doesn't look too "vaginal" to you... well, keep in mind that they were showing this on TV. They seem to get a bit more "explicit" with EVA-02's eyes in EoE:

Granted, it's not quite as bad as the other two examples in EoE, but consider that they could have drawn the Evas' eyes without making them look suggestive at all. I've considered that maybe they do this because they are trying to tell us something about the Evas, without actually showing it (not that they would be allowed to, anyway) -- but that might just be wishful thinking on my part.

Back to the "birth" symbolism, you are correct, Nephilim, about Shogouki's chest being turned into a symbolic vulva when her core swells, tearing the covering open and pushing it to the sides to form "labia". Here you can see that they even added two additional "mini-cores" to reinforce the imagery.

BTW, Shin-seiki, what's the deal with the souls flowing into GNR's hands? Isn't their destination supposed to be the Black Moon? Exactly what's going on here?

How many other faux-vulvas can we find in EoE? I honestly can't think of anything as unambiguous as what GNR has, but here are some other instances that popped out at me. Most likely I just have a dirty mind, and there probably isn't anything else going on here. ...or is there?

They aren't teeth; they just appear for one frame, and I thought it was vaguely evocative of a hymen or something. Like I said, I'm just weird.

While I'm ambivalent about the first two examples, the third is a bit too blatant to dismiss, I think.

i just watched episode 2 platinum edition last night (before reading this thread) and the eye sockets were definitely vaginal, which was a little startling considering how early it is in the series (way before everything goes all symbolic and conspiritorial.)

Renewal of Evangelion was released ages ago in Japan, as a box set and as singles. The problem is that here in the rest of the world, we have two separate licencees for Evangelion. The Platinum Edition, by ADV is based upon Renewal, but Manga Entertainment show no signs of releasing the Renewal version of EoE.
