Eh, I disagree, I think Anonymous_Evafan is right. Gendo sees himself as someone that will only cause pain to others and acts accordingly. I don't think it's mere apathy.

and he's always been trying to get back to his wife, thus his plans for Instrumentality.
ever since Yui "died" he's been obsessed with being with her again

Thats obvious. But it doesnt mean he's happy when others aren't. I dont think he is happy at all, and infact might be very sad, because he is unable to truely love anyone, even his own son, because he feels unworthy.

wait a moment... some said that gendou ha no clue about Yui's plan beforehand. but what about after the fact? i think in EOE didn't Fuyutsuki say at one point "its why she chose to remain in the EVA."? i mean i saw EOE in Japanese(with subs) before i saw the dub but i think he said the same thing.

Did I not say it doesn't excuse his actions at all? It was never my intent to say that it did, but merly to point out he does have feelings however bizzarely expressed

Gendo's reaction tell us he wasn't in on it at the time. What all the good professor told him after the fact is unknown.

I dont think I was. Understanding something doesn't excuse it. I remember hearing something somewhere that a book about Hitler's life was banned because people felt to better understanding Hitler's actions would cause some people to simpathize with him and "give him an excuse". I feel this is nonsense. Not to say Gendo is at a Hitler level by any stretch of the imagination, and sorry for fufilling Godwin's law, but you're expressing the same kind of notion about Gendo. Gendo was a horrible person, he has no excuse for that. But to understand WHY he acted the way he did and understand his feelings does NOT give him an excuse.

Ok I understand gendo did what he did out of fear of being hurt emotionally.

I however can't forgive his actions the way I can Shinji or Asuka. I choose to judge a 48 year old husband and father more stringently then a 14 year old.
