Lyrics to Ode to Joy
Oh friends, no more of these sad tones!
Let us rather raise our voices together
In more pleasant and joyful tones.
Joy!
Joy, thou shining spark of God,
Daughter of Elysium,
With fiery rapture, goddess,
We approach thy shrine.
Your magic reunites
That which stern custom has parted;
All humans will become brothers
(Schiller's original:
What custom's sword has parted;
Beggars become princes' brothers)
Under your protective wing.
Let the man who has had the fortune
To be a helper to his friend,
And the man who has won a noble woman,
Join in our chorus of jubilation!
Yes, even if he holds but one soul
As his own in all the world!
But let the man who knows nothing of this
Steal away alone and in sorrow.
All the world's creatures drink
From the breasts of nature;
Both the good and the evil
Follow her trail of roses.
She gave us kisses and wine
And a friend loyal unto death;
She gave the joy of life to the lowliest,
And to the angels who dwell with God.
Joyous, as his suns speed
Through the glorious order of Heaven,
Hasten, brothers, on your way,
Joyful as a hero to victory.
Be embraced, all ye millions!
With a kiss for all the world!
Brothers, beyond the stars
Surely dwells a loving Father.
Do you kneel before him, oh millions?
Do you sense the Creator's presence?
Seek him beyond the stars!
He must dwell beyond the stars.

well i love it.
personally i saw the title of the song as the significant part.
i took it to mean that kaworu thought that mankinds ability to celebrate happiness was the most valuable thing that they had. more important than his own life. or something like that.
I'd never heard of it having anything to do with destiny or anything.
but thats just me.

or maybe it wasn't intended for eva?
did you think of that?
you don't have to find a meaning in everything you see.

That song was not written for eva, so not every word will have meaning to eva.
Who said i was human?
Its human nature to find meaning in all things. Thats what makes you humans human.

We know that a large portion of the series was written at the same time as they produced the show so I don't Eva was based on it--more likely that the Anno thought the music was a good vehicle through which to further illustrate the themes of Eva and the episode...

maybe we shouldnt analyse so much...eh?
No, I think analyzing is fine (why else would we be here), but I think that sometimes we make the error that aspects of Eva are directley related to or bsed off of things in real like (such as theology, classical pieces, philosophy, etc.) I think in this case the basics of the episode were probably in place and then Anno took Ode to Joy and tweaked some aspects of the story to make it fit together better instead of taking the song and writing the entire episode so that everything in the song is represented in some way within the episode. But of course I agree that they are tied together--I just think the initial motivation did not come from the song per se...
