Saints Row. Started off average good fun, peak at a good height at 2, fell from grace with 3.

Just no satisfaction with 3, no sense of progression, no sense of earning the things you get. I shall have to play 4 to see how bad the bad things are.

From what I've heard and seen SR4 just decided to let Rockstar and GTAV handle all the 'serious stuff' and went into full blown over the top Family guy self-parody.

Basically anything that lasts beyond one game will likely have at least one terrible installment. Because more people get involved who just don't understand what made the original product high quality.

On that note. Sonic. Things have become so bad that the old games that are still good have been tainted retroactively by the new failed installments that just don't seem to understand what made the classic games work.

Final fantasy 6 was the last good one. Too caught up in graphics whoredom and experimenting with gameplay that wasn't broken.

Chrono Cross was an antisequel, trying to retroactively ruin the original with its shitty plot.

Diablo 3 was a complete clusterfuck, the product of game designers who didn't understand what made the first two great.

Megaman X5 and beyond was increasingly phoned in or just plain wrongheaded.

Any series that started in 2d should continue to play that way. Zelda, Mario, Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden... I'm looking at all of you.

Belt buckles...belt buckles as far as the eye can see....

I personally liked the transition from 2D to 3D for Zelda (if anything, Legend of Zelda was a 3D game on a 2D format). Wind Waker, to me, was the promise of everything Zelda was going to be on new consoles, and I was kind of disappointed it didn't really follow through. I mean, the new games aren't bad (they are pretty), but Wind Waker just had that nice mix of all 'Zelda' elements.

Metroid, though, has definitely gone in strange directions.

As a PC gamer (for the most part), Call of Duty is so...frigging...generic. I remember the first one, how unique it was...and now its just copy-and-paste game production at this point. SimCity is being completely gutted as a respectable franchise. And Warcraft is killing me inside. I was an avid Warcraft and Warcraft II player (which led to Starcraft, still my favorite game of the Blizzard group), enjoyed Warcraft III...and then World of Warcraft came. I am never going to see another Warcraft strategy game again. Blizzard is making way too much money with the MMORPG format, and I can't stand that: I don't like MMORPGs, I play video games to disconnect from people for a bit (I deal with people a lot in day-to-day life, I just need a break sometimes!), and the few times I've tried MMORPGs, they just aren't fun to me.

...I really want Warcraft IV.

Silent Hill after the 3rd one. It's not that the 4th one was bad but it felt like a spin-off game. After that the franchise was blasted into the chaos. Hope the new one fix this.

Resident Evil. The 4th one was the last good game. 5th and 6th are like modern shooters, with co-op elements, bros partners etc
There was a signature here. It's gone now....... - This is (not) a Silent Hill's reference

Did not like how the Harvest Moon series is being split up now all cause Natsume owns the Harvest Moon name and Xseed has Story of Seasons.

I love the games, but this split is ridiculous.

After a steady run of improvements in the previous games, including the spin-offs, Civ III had way too much resource juggling. I abandoned it when I realised that I simply could not tell which mountains were supposed to have the iron ore that I needed to use one of the critical tech advances.

I have no idea what the later editions were like; I just made the tacit assumption that like III they were for the people who got bored of beating the previous version even with the extra difficulty above Emperor level hack switched on.

Hmm... the Sonic series post Sonic Adventure 2, the Metroid series starting with Prime 2, the Final Fantasy series post FFIX (although it has shown signs of recovery recently), the Ninja Gaiden series post Sigma 1, and the Resident Evil series post RE4 (which, while it was a great game, was also the game that started the series down the slope).

I know this is all opinions but...........
^Sonic unleashed i had fun with, colours was awesome and generations was amazing, lost world was OK, just OK and boom doesn't count since it wasn't even going to be a sonic game, sega just threw money at big red button cause the cartoon (which is funny btw) was coming out soon, metroid prime 3 is almost as good as 1 (meaning amazing) and nothing you can ever say will convince me otherwise, other m is ONE game.
Final fantasy X is still my favourite final fantasy of all time so i would at least say post X is when it started and resident evil?............general agreement, i would also like to add silent hill on there as after 4 (which had issues but was good) it became very meh.

As for zelda.........i cant really say it went downhill cause im one of THOSE people that prefers twilight princess to oot and i ADORED a link between worlds (even though it was basically just a link to the past 2.0)

Resident Evil has been shocking. Even more shocking that they still haven't remade the second game.

Well, Dead Space. It was never as thought-provoking as the Silent Hill franchise (which has also gone downhill with desperate attempts to recapture the magic of the second game, but they're trying to revitalize it with Kojima/del Toro's Silent Hills so not sure if it counts), but it did have a fairly original combat system and I thought it was fairly interesting as a horror/action game. The problem was that the action segments kept becoming more prevalent through the sequels, and the third game really messed up the plot by trying to introduce too many concepts which hadn't been adequately foreshadowed or built up in the previous two games.

The Walking Dead and Telltale games in general have been getting worse, although maybe Tales from the Borderlands and Game of Thrones won't be as bad as their recent offerings.

Oh god 3rd Birthday! Why did you do that Square Enix!? Why did you ruined Aya Brea and turned her from broken bird badass cop with bio-mystical powers and great intelligence to a generic moe shit with the IQ of a lobotomized snail and hanging around half-naked? Why did you changed the story from horror investigation with clinical biologic manipulation for some time travel and souls bullshit! WHY!!!

And while I'm on it, also Assassin's Creed. The games are still good, and it's still a pleasure to visit ancient periods, but they have just oversaturated the market with it with one new episode per year, and this year it's even worse, since there are three of them that were released (the on in France, the one in China and the last one where you play a Templar), and there's again another one that will be released in 2015, taking place in Victorian London.
Yes, we got it, after the Ezio trilogy in the Renaissance and the American Trilogy (III, Black Flag and Rogue), now we're heading toward a new trilogy in the revolutionary Europe (the political and industrial ones), but I'm saturating, hell I didn't even started Black Flag yet!

What the franchise desperately needs now is to take a break for a few years, the time for gamers to digest all these assassins, and release a game that do changes the franchise (something that Unity tried to do but failed) and isn't a complete technical disaster necessitating months of patches to be playable.
Oh yeah and that while AC is resting that they finish Beyond Good And Evil 2, I've been waiting for twelve fucking years now!

Resident Evil. Oh, God, Resident Evil. :( CV was good and 4 was still decent, but beyond that... The less said of Chris punching boulders, the better.

Assassin's Creed too. While the historical events are still fun, the latest installment (Unity) really makes me wonder if they've just given up on the modern day events. The Assassins vs Templars really seemed like window dressing for bigger events (Spoilers if I say anymore) that have had no continuation, let alone any resolution. Uh. :|

I personally think MegaMan X should have ended at X 5, but X 8 seemed to bring the series back to its roots alongside a new direction. I haven't seen too much of X 6 or X 7 to comment and haven't been keeping up on the original MM series.

I'd also say Final Fantasy, but I haven't played enough of the later stuff to really know (From what I've seen of FF13 overall, it's good, while the third one's meh). I've played 6-9, and 9 seemed to be the last "good" one, from what little I know of the more current ones. 10 was awful from what little I played and watched. HA HA HA HA HA.

10 is my favorite. Best love story in gaming. The laugh scene never even stood out to me and the fact that so many people glommed on to it continues to mystify me; what about the other 49.9 hours of the game? The emotionally evocative storytelling? The fantastic voice-acting of Auron and Wakka? The brotherly relationship that develops between Tidus and Wakka, and the reasons why, and the relationship between Tidus and Yuna? The way we felt when Tidus and Yuna had their scene, especially in the context of what we just learned? The themes of the story? The various revelations about the plot that bolstered its emotions so successfully? No other game, let alone a Final Fantasy one, made me feel as much as this one did. When my dog died, this was the game I played to cheer myself up. It has a special place in me that I'll take to my grave.

(And I actually found the laugh scene endearing. It was one of their many little shared moments that did a lot to build their relationship.)

Everything after that has failed to strike even half the same fire, though. 13 was better than 12, sure, but there was still a fundamental distance between it and me that we just couldn't close. 13-2 is proving thus far to be better still, more emotionally engaging, but still nowhere near 10's level.

+1.... Code: Veronica was my favorite entry in the series though, but I think it was mostly for sentimental reasons. Also, DUAL WIELDING!

----------

Speaking of dual wielding though, the current state of the Halo franchise has me just a bit more upset than the current state of RE. Basically thinking of any game past Halo 3 depresses me to no end.

I still have a vivid memory of playing Combat Evolved for the first time back in 02 and being absolutely blown away by the fact that you could see your hands actually reloading your weapon instead of the gun leaving the screen and coming back fully loaded. Then Halo 2 coming out with its fantastic weapons and maps and leveling systems and me buying an Xbox and signing up for Live solely to play it. Then making the transition to Halo 3 and always knowing it wasn't better than 2 but enjoying it all the same, even though all of the other gamers in my high school were all about CoD 4.

There wasn't anything fancy about those three games, it was just you, your BR(or pistol), and a jump button. No load outs, experience points, dull maps, 1,000 different armor combinations. If you were a good player you'd win and level up, if you weren't, you'd level down. The world was at peace.

But time progressed, and things got complicated in the Halo world and you'd spend an entire night playing Halo 4 and remembering fondly the old Halo days, in which there was more than one enjoyable map to play.

But of course, I could just be a bitter old man overcome by nostalgia...but I'm definitely not. :kawaii:

Hate to be that guy but after MW2 the COD franchise has just been repetitive multiplayer and mediocre storytelling. I won't lie I liked the story of BO2. But ghost and advanced warfare suffers from being .too repetitive and too different at the same time as well as lazy writing from the 3 developers. Also any resident evil outbreak fans out there?
