I just had an awful realization. Call it a crazy theory if you will, call it what you like but still the fact remains. (Based on only the first two Rebuilds, I haven't watched the third)
Rebuild of Evangelion is a Sequel to the original.
Consider if you will, Tabgha base. It is a base on the moon, a large red streak appears across the moon. In End of Evangelion Giant Naked Rei bleeds like crazy from a neck wound spraying it into the sky and blotting it across the moon.
In Rebuild, the Ocean is red from "Second Impact" but this only happened in Third Impact in the series when the Sea of LCL was created.
In Rebuild's Second Impact, multiple White humanoids are seen as ascended Angels, much like the MP Evas from EoE.
In a similar vein this could explain why somethings are different with the characters.
By EoE, only those that could recognise themselves and wish to return to human form could do so. So what if-
Gendou recognised himself as Gendou Ikari and came back like that and thus never took Yui's name?
Asuka too has changed somewhat what with her shift in name, being a Captain at 14 and other details inconsistent with the original.
Misato could have suffered much less contamination in reforming herself and thus is virtually unchanged.
Kaworu, perhaps due to his unique nature seems to retain knowledge and memory of Shinji despite the two seemingly never having met before in Rebuild?
And even then some mechanical differences.
Evas can seemingly Sync with just about anyone, perhaps Soul Pollution making anyone of the right age compatible?
I don't know if this theory has been posted before or if this is even an appropriate place for it, but it just sorta occured to me and it was a spur of the moment decision.
