Bingo.

Eva Yojimbo wrote:My theory about Kaworu's popularity is the same one behind Rei's popularity; these characters - especially compared with the others in the show - are mysterious, blank canvasses on which the audience can project all of their fantasies on and, essentially, "fill in the blanks". It's not that they aren't given adequate characterization (especially Rei), but they are certainly much more abstract and symbolic than the rest of the cast. Plus, there's the whole sexually ambiguous nature behind both of them which definitely appeals to horny anime fans and fanfic writers.
I like the idea of a "blank canvas," for both Rei and Kaworu as characters. They have enough of their own personal characteristics to make them individuals but they also have obvious gaps which the audience can fill in should they want to. I think this idea could explain the extreme popularity of these characters as people can essentially "design" a character to suit their own likes / needs etc. Its an interesting point.... Granted I have Kaworu as a avatar and I do like him as a character but then I like quite a few of nge's characters, so at the moment i cant really place why i chose it...

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Akira Ishida's dead-on performance as Kaworu's seiyuu. Kaworu would not be an easy character to get right. Ishida is perfect and makes the character endearing. Performance is just as important as the character's words and deeds.

It's a word filter.
lol Kaworu isn't bosnian at all though, especially with all of that smiling
I wonder what else there's a word filter though
I wonder why there's a word filter for that 3 letter word I wrote...Would someone care to enlighten me?
I know too little about Bosnia to have an opinion on whether Kaworu would be considered "hot"if he was a national from that country...

In my opinion, Kaworu is popular because the he's so ill defined that he's infinitely interpretable.
This means you can think of him however you want, from a biological weapon controlled by SEELE to an angel who falls in love with a human. Or anywhere in between.
Like I said, the interpretations are infinite.

I would not say "infinite". Saying that is like saying it's reasonable for someone to say Pokemon is a Freudian dream. So, the interpretation should be within reason.
ok, infinity minus one.
what, what thread is this? who's talking? *leaves thread*

I don't care for Eva-elitists. I don't know everything, and neither do you.

He's the ultimate tragedy of Eva, in my opinion.
He is, seemingly, the perfect person, and the last desperate attempt to give Shinji happiness. He's essentially a Mary Sue character that didn't come off as broken. But just like the Angels, the person Shinji believed Kaworu to be was completely irreconcilable with human reality, and had to be destroyed. He was more than the last Angel; he was a fantasy of idealism that had to be abandoned if Shinji was to have any hope of having meaningful connections with real people; and that's why so many people like him, unfortunately. They idealize him and kind've miss the point, since most likely he was a conniving little shit that was just using Shinji. :P
