Shinji's Nationality

Postby Wonderboy » Mon Jul 20, 2009 2:21 pm

Well I've had this on my mind for a while now. I've been wondering what nationality Shinji comes from, automatically most people would say Japanese of course.

I know this is nothing more then a stereotype, but I've recently noticed Shinji's eyes are a dark shade of blue. While to most that may mean nothing, but blue eyes on an Asian, whether it be Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, is fairly uncommon.

Now this brings me to a speculation that maybe Shinji is a mixture of two races o.o, this is rather unlikely since both of his parents (I assume) are of Japanese descent, both having Japanese last names and what not (Ikari and Rokubungi)

Maybe I'm thinking to much, but I'm just curious as to what Shinji's nationality is. :nyao:

Standard anime physics explain hair and eye colours. Those are a given of the form.

I haven't seen an anime yet that has characters that actually look Japanese in them. They all look very Caucasian.

Ironically enough, that's my biggest problem with Japanese cos players, or Japanese actors in live-action anime remakes (the DeathNote movies). Their nationality is all too wrong for them to be playing their own Japanese characters.

PRO-TIP: Anime characters do not look like any nationality because they are hand-drawn cartoons.

To the Japanese, anime characters look Japanese.

To Westerners, they look Western.

And so on.

PRO-TIP #2: Cultures, like people, are self-centred.

Yeah, I noticed Misato's hair is purple. I think that means she's probably an alien.

Rei's eyes are red
Her hair is blue
Misato can be a bitch
So what are---

Oh wait....

In all seriousness I don't think his eye color really means anything. I do think Shinji is Japanese and probably nothing else(Has anyone for a brief moment ever pictured Gendo being part Scottish?).

I've recently noticed Shinji's eyes are a dark shade of blue.

I've never really noticed Shinji's eye were any kind of blue until you mentioned it.

(From the wiki)

It's a dark blue as you mentioned but I don't think it has any major significance and Shinji (most likely) is just Japanese and nothing else.

It's just an anime. The medium itself allows the artist to express character traits through unnatural color pallets, and because it's all stylized character design anyway, having unnatural colors wouldn't be as distracting as it would if it were live-action.

I have no idea when nationality Shinji looks like (I like the point oOoOoOo made), simply because the color pallet in his character design were only used to reveal his personality in some way, not nationality.

Anime characters (of the typical variety) are hyper idealized, so they don't really look like anyone.

when you actually compare them to Japanese people they look more realistic if you assume they're Japanese. Many animes have blonde's, as well as blues and purples. Mostly as they tend to be rather stylin', so it can be assume that it's dyed, as is possible with Misato, but it seems mighty unlikely in the case of Rei, and by now their is so many animes that its probably rarely though of as dyed, and more just character designs. and fyi misatos hair is blue not purple, why do people say that.

Reminds me of how different peoples around the world like to make Jesus Christ look like them. I've seen Arab Jesus (probably the most accurate), white Jesus, black Jesus, and Asian Jesus.

Also, it's an anime . . .
