I don't know, Eva-01/Yui just looms in the background and is completely passive during the keymoments of the film apart from the "scaring the crap out of JSSDF mmbers and saving Shinji" part.
I see you're point. But to me, there is no "Evangelion" without Yui. Since she's probably the reason that everything comes full circle in the end. Everything you see in "Neon Genesis/End Of Evangelion" happens, because of Yui. I feel that she planned on certain things to happen, that would trigger other events. She's like a musician, and the third impact is her 9th Symphony.
The fate of destruction is also the joy of rebirth.

easy, the first part involves SFAiB and Shinji being dragged to Unit-01 by Misato while fighting through the JSSDF seige of NERV
second part involves the most overused clip in AMVs, Asuka/Kyoko vs. JSSDF and all them harpies

its hard for me to say it, but for EoE, definitely Misato.
God, Apparently you all have been discussing Q since November. Catching up on the discussion is harrowing.

This point of view has been expressed before, but there really isn't a lead female in EoE. There is one lead character, and that person is Shinji. EoE obviously revolves around him. Everyone else is just costars. You can pick different characters for different scenes, but it's all because of their interaction with the star, Shinji. Misato, Asuka, Rei (Rei/Lilith), and Yui are all valid choices thanks to their scenes with Shinji.
I hope no one thinks I'm taking the easy way out...

I'm leaning towards no one easily defined 'lead'. Like it's been written, Misato is the only one the audience can root for in the first half of the film, she's the only one who isn't insane and depressed by that point. But let's face it, the Asuka/Shinji dynamic is probably the most important to Shinji (obviously excluding Yui, but she's too busy being fused to an Eva for that to really be as noticeable as it should be).
But then Rei and Lilith really steal the spotlight. Lilith was comatose much longer to Asuka and she got a lot more done after she got up.
Yeah, it's probably best that we jut concede that Misatio gets the beginning, Asuka gets the middle, Rei gets the end and Asuka gets the very end.

"Now, from Nature we obtain abundant information about ourselves, and precious little about others. About the woman you clasp in your arms, can you say with certainty that she does not feign pleasure? About the woman you mistreat, are you quite sure that from abuse she does not derive some obscure and lascivious satisfaction? Let us confine ourselves to simple evidence: through thoughtfulness, gentleness, concern for the feelings of others we saddle our own pleasure with restrictions, and make this sacrifice to obtain a doubtful result." -The Divine Marquis

I think it's intentional that there isn't a single female lead, as Shinji's inability to decide what or who he wants is central to the story. Asuka, Rei, and Misato are each shown at their absolute best and probably get roughly equal screen time, with the 'hiding behind smiles to keep things ambiguous' scene, featuring images of all three shifting in prominence, as the apex of this theme. While Asuka does get the lead at the end, it's worth noting that both Rei and Misato are still there if only in spirit (cross on grave marker, bookend and GIANT HEAD).
