What element of Eva made you decide to check it out?

This is the place to start: Feel free to introduce yourself, have general conversations and casual discussions about all things Evangelion, including chit-chatty topics like "Sachiel is adorable" or "Which Eva kicks the most ass?"

What element of Eva made you decide to check it out?

Hi all, i'm a new user from Argentina. I read this forum from time to time, same with Eva, I get obsessed from time to time. It's healthier that way :)

I guess the poll is clear enough, it is not about your favorite element/aspect of Eva, but the one that made you say "This looks interesting, I'll check it out" in the first place.
In my case, it was the mecha/angel designs. The first time I saw something about Evangelion was the opening, as an ad in some Dragon Ball Z video... I thought it was somewhat interesting but the only thing I really remembered from that was Shinji's face at the beginning, and I thought he looked funny (?). Then some weeks/months later I saw another ad in another DBZ video, this time it was the opening music, but with the Sachiel battle scene, and then I thought it was REALLY cool and modern... hehe, back in 1998 Eva looked really modern compared to all the 80s/early 90s anime I was watching.
Then I read a small article on a magazine, which basically said it was a post-apocalyptic series with giant robots and unknown enemies called "Angels".
And that was it, without knowing much about it I started watching it... thinking it was just a SUPER COOL mecha series with really original/wacky enemy designs.
When Lilith appeared in ep 15 and all the stuff going on after that, I knew I wasn't watching just a modern giant robot anime, but something else, and I got totally absorved by it. But truth is, I entered because of the mecha aspect.

(I tried to make a poll but it doesn't let me use too much options so it's useless, but these were going to be the options, if you had another one just write it down):

- Mecha/Angel designs
- Character designs in general
- Character designs (girls)
- Character designs (boys)
- The psychological references
- The religious references
- I was already a Gainax fan so I had to check it out
- Someone introduced it to me
- Just the plot

ps: I choose mecha/angel designs, because it as the first thing I saw from Eva and decided to look for more, but when I read the small article I became a lot more interested, so the Plot is also another strong reason for me.

* I was getting back into the habit of watching stuff, grace of DVD drives
* I'd exhausted the tolerable looking girls'n'guns titles available at the local Borders
* It was becoming available on DVD (this was 4 years ago)
* I'd heard of it as having a reputation of being one of the better giant robot shows

The rest is history

I actually first saw Evangelion in manga form. I was in a depressed phase, and just saw a huge amount of parallels between myself and Shinji. I then properly started watching the anime when I became interested in psychology anfd philosophy - or rather, I could say that Evangelion got me interested in psychology.
Normality is overrated

Kaworu/Asuka - give it a chance!
(Clarification - I still like Asuka/Shinji)

Hmmm, interesting.... I was reading a few mangas that had some Eva things on it as a homage, and I decided that I might as well as get the whole thing, and after watching it, I became a fervent fan.
Also, some other Wagnerites persuaded me to watch it, them knowing I like anime and mangas in general.

It was the fifth anime I saw after Cowboy Bebop, Dragonball Z, Outlaw Star, and Noir. I got one of those Amazon.com email recommendations, saying that Evangelion was one of the best anime ever. So, I downloaded it and, since I had no expectations or no idea what it was even about, I ended up loving it.

Went and saw The End of Evangelion at the movies. Laughed but got intrigued.

If you believe that this is true then I must ask;
to what end do you proceed?

lol

I first watched on AS., Untill then I thought all anime had to offer was BOOBS and EXPLOSIONS (and nice art). Up untill then I thought I'd outgrow anime because live action boobs are much nicer and the action in movies was mindblowing thanks to CGI....I thought I was out but Evangelion pulled me back in.
I won.

psycho-logi-cal

Not in having to do with any *specific* psychological theory, but in just hearing that the series had a lot of powerful characterization going on. Often to do with angst and trauma, but that's always the way.

I think it was an article in Anime Insider that led me to check it out for these reasons, though at the time I was at least enough into anime to have seen *images* from the series without any clue as to what it was about.

I had often heard of it being considered the best anime series, and the only two GAINAX series I had seen before (FLCL and Mahoromatic) had affected me more than any other anime, so it was an obvious decision to watch it when it started on Adult Swim. After Magma Diver, though, I got fed up with waiting a week between episodes and got Netflix. I watched the rest of the series within a few days with the plan that lets you have three DVDs out at a time.

A pretty box and me watching Nadia before hand. I liked Nadia a lot so I though Ganiax was a pretty good company. I saw Eva was made by them too and it even had #1 anime of all time on the box so I got it.

Pathetic as it may sound, the psycological points of view and such in the anime helped get me out of my depression. I didn't quite understand it the first time through, but after studying it, it began to make sense :P . I also love the mech designs, the plot, and the character designs (particularly Rei :P).

Seriously, it was purely by accident I caught onto an Eva fansite, and found it all very interesting. After I got sick of Halo, this was the place to be!

A friend showed me End of Evangelion back when it was released. I had no idea what was going on, but I thought it was pretty cool, so I eventually checked out the rest of the series.

I knew what the show was about and it intrigued me from a distance. I finally decided to check it out.

Actually, I'm surprised BobBQ went for the Desert Eagle lookalike. I'd have taken the Mechnem NTW-20 lookalike sniper that Rei uses.
